Lotus poaches senior Ferrari engineer

The decision of a single engineer you’ve probably never heard of to leave one company for another is probably not exactly earth-shattering news, which might explain why neither the company he’s been with for the last 33 years, nor the one he has just joined felt the need to communicate the fact. But to me at least the decision of Franco Cimatti to leave Ferrari for Lotus is one of the most significant developments in the Lotus story since it was bought by Geely.

Franco - I can call him that because I’ve known him for 25 years - was probably Ferrari’s most unsung hero. He came into Ferrari product development in the early 1990s when its cars were the worst in its history - the Testarossa, Mondial and 348 was not much of a stable. His influence was felt almost immediately: he turned the 348 into the F355, launched the 456GT and 550 Maranello and has been instrumental in the design of Ferrari road cars thereafter up to and including the LaFerrari. Few would argue the cars that were engineered on his watch were among the finest in Ferrari history.

Given that, it might seem odd to be swapping Maranello for Norwich but ‘the time seemed right,’ he told me yesterday. ‘Geely is serious about Lotus, the funding is in place and the product programme too.’ Franco is very discreet so would not be drawn on what those products might be, but I know him well enough to be sure he’d not have traded Emilia-Romagna for Norfolk without a damn good reason. ‘It was tough at first,’ he says with a smile, ‘but I’ve found Waitrose, so everything’s fine now...’ My hopes for the future of Lotus just went up a few more notches.

Brilliant! Love the comment about Waitrose, having grown up in Norfolk and Norwich I can understand. A few friends of mine have been with Lotus since the 80’s, the tales from the DB brief era are most entertaining.

You’ll have seen so many grainy leaked images of the new Land Rover Defender by now that you’ll probably have made your mind up already. But we can finally show you these hi-res images of the new model, from all angles, of both versions and in various settings.
_
It is unmistakably a Defender, with its very upright and four-square stance. Those prominent shoulders, alpine light windows, chequer plate details and side hinged tailgate all scream Defender, but the car looks modern. It’s a more forward-looking design than that of the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class - much less of a facsimile.
_
The new Defender sits on the D7x platform - x for extreme. The current Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport all use the related D7u platform. The Defender’s body is an aluminium monocoque, three times more rigid than a body-on-frame design. Suspension is fully independent all round. The short overhangs give approach and departure angles of 38 and 40 degrees. The ground clearance with optional air springs and off-road tyres is 291mm. Maximum wading depth is 900mm.
_
There’s permanent four-wheel drive, a centre differential and an optional active rear differential. The eight-speed auto ‘box offers high and low range. The engine line-up includes two four-cylinder diesels, a 300bhp four-cylinder turbo petrol and a 400bhp turbo petrol straight-six with mild hybrid. A plug-in hybrid will arrive in 2020. The three-door model is badged 90, the five-door 110. The longer version will start at £45,240, the shorter one at around £40,000.

The cabin has a rubberised floor with flush fitting sills, which means you can mop and brush out your interior. Just don’t try to hose it out. There’s the choice of five, six or seven seats, including an optional jump seat for occasional use between the two front seats. Accessories? Roof tents, roof racks, water rinse systems, external kit carriers... Like it?

Have we just witnessed a power shift at the Scuderia? While young Charles Leclerc won today’s Italian Grand Prix in forceful, emphatic style, Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel made silly mistakes and finished well outside the top 10. The four-time world champion now trails Leclerc in the championship standings having slipped down to fifth.

While one of the Ferrari men looked assured, calm under intense pressure and at one with his machine this weekend, the other appeared nervy and hot-headed, driving as though he had everything to prove. Vettel must now address the fact that in his 13th season as an F1 driver, he has at times been made to look the rookie by a 21-year-old in only his second.

Elsewhere, Valtteri Bottas was able to nibble into Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton’s enormous championship lead, but a two point swing looks insubstantial with only seven races to run and 63 points between the two men.

It’s hard to see the beauty in Spa-Francorchamps on a weekend when it’s claimed another young life. But the home of the Belgian Grand Prix is perhaps the only beautiful circuit left on the Formula One calendar - while many race tracks fold themselves awkwardly around compact plots of land, Spa-Francorchamps spears and tumbles its way through the picturesque Ardennes forest.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc became an F1 race winner, narrowly holding off a charging Lewis Hamilton to take the Scuderia’s first win in 2019. Second in the race was sufficient for Hamilton to increase his championship advantage; with eight races to run this season, he leads teammate Valtteri Bottas by 65 points.
