New Brunswick Museum

This rare mineral disappears when exposed to moisture, which is why it's never been found in New Brunswick — until now. 💎
.
It's called melanterite and it was found by mineral collector Jesse Chamberlain near Nepisiguit Falls in May.
.
"It was the first time I ever seen that colour come out of the ground," Chamberlain said.
.
The mineral is described as an iron sulphate, a mixture of water and copper that disintegrates when submerged in liquid.
.
Chamberlain donated 50 samples to the New Brunswick Museum's geology collection where they're being stored in air-tight, water-sealed containers.

Canadian Forces Base Gagetown

🔊SOUND UP 🔊
.
Soldiers at Base Gagetown had the opportunity to put an old and unsafe bridge to good use on Thursday — by blowing it up. 💥
.
The bridge was demolished as part of practical and technical training for military engineers.
.
The soldiers spent eight hours installing detonating cords connected to C-4 explosives on Wednesday.
.
The Malta Bridge was built in 1980 and it is located within the Base Gagetown training area, about 25 kilometres southeast of Fredericton.

Saint John, New Brunswick

The Sisters of Charity will be celebrating their 165th year of service this weekend.
.
The congregation was founded in 1854 in Saint John and only has 58 members left.
.
To commemorate their accomplishments, archivist Lex Stephenson put together a permanent exhibit documenting the history of the convent.
.
It depicts the founding of the order in Saint John, a city then rife with disease and overwhelmed starving immigrants.
.
One of the order's earliest accomplishments was opening a home for dozens of children who'd been orphaned by the cholera outbreak.
.
"Before the government really stepped in and started building hospitals and having well-funded public education, the sisters did all those things," said Sister Monica Plante.
.
The exhibit will officially open this weekend at the Ruth Ross Residence, where 40 sisters reside.

Tracy, New Brunswick

Two people are in custody after RCMP barricaded a stretch of road in Tracy this morning.
.
A man and a woman inside a building in the barricaded area were taken into custody, police say.
.
There were at least seven RCMP vehicles and one armoured vehicle on the scene, and a police negotiator entered the building.
.
Route 101 from Boone Road to Willow Avenue was closed early this morning but reopened at 11:30 a.m.
.
RCMP said they received a report shortly after midnight about an incident involving a firearm.
.
There were no injuries, but a house next door was evacuated.
.
RCMP couldn't confirm whether or not the barricade was related to the incident that happened during the night.
.
Floyd Ingram of Yes Bye Fries on Route 101, said someone shot through the window of his home. Both the business and the house are on the same property.

Saint John, New Brunswick

Saint John will likely be needing thousands of new residential units in the next few years, according to a study released by the city.🏛️
.
Five years ago the vacancy rate in Saint John was at 12 per cent but now it's fallen to only three per cent.
.
The study suggested baby boomers are driving rental demands by downsizing to apartments and when they retire, their jobs are being filled by immigrants moving to the city.
.
But uptown Saint John is seeing a lot of growth which is drawing in people of all ages.
.
The manager of strategic projects for Develop Saint John said 1,500 rental units are in the process of being built.
.
The new Telegraph building (last photo) on Canterbury Street will add 32 new apartments to the city, but construction likely won't begin until next year.
