Honoring people like Sojourner Truth! Happy Black History Month! “Sojourner Truth was an African American abolitionist and women's rights activist best-known for her speech on racial inequalities, "Ain't I a Woman?", delivered extemporaneously in 1851 at the Ohio Women's Rights Convention.
Truth was born into slavery but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. She devoted her life to the abolitionist cause and helped to recruit black troops for the Union Army. Although Truth began her career as an abolitionist, the reform causes she sponsored were broad and varied, including prison reform, property rights and universal suffrage.” Source and full story: https://www.biography.com/activist/sojourner-truth

Our ancestors are trailblazers! After becoming the first Black woman in the United States to receive a Ph.D. in psychology, Inez Beverly Prosser went on to pioneer research in the field of educational psychology and the development of African-American students & the effects of racism.

O.W. Gurley, the Visionary Who Fostered Decades of Prosperity and Wealth for Black Folks with the Creation of Tulsa’s Black Wall Street.
.
“Gurley began the work of community building almost immediately upon his arrival in the territory. In 1889 he served as the principal of the City Schools of Perry, Oklahoma. In 1906 he helped to found the AME Church in Tulsa. The same year he purchased 40 acres of land that he reserved for Black purchases only. This land established Tulsa's Black community. Gurley built a hotel, built five homes and three two-story buildings, had a real estate business, and was also a merchant. In addition, he purchased an 80 acre farm in Rogers County. Gurley's hotel was located on a road he named Greenwood, after the city of Greenwood, Mississippi.” .
.
“Gurley's prominence, influence and wealth were short lived. In a matter of moments, he lost everything. During the race war, The Gurley Hotel at 112 N. Greenwood, the street’s first commercial enterprise, valued at $55,000, was lost, and with it Brunswick Billiard Parlor and Dock Eastmand & Hughes Cafe. Gurley also owned a two-story building at 119 N. Greenwood. It housed Carter’s Barbershop, Hardy Rooms, a pool hall, and cigar store. All were reduced to ruins. By his account and court records, he lost nearly $200,000 in the 1921 race war.

The exact date of his death is unknown.

Recommended Viewing: He was honored in a 2008 documentary film called, Before They Die! The Road to Reparations for the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot Survivors.

Def Comedy Jam” created by #RussellSimmons, is the iconic show that brought black comedy to the forefront when other platforms at the time (1992-1997) weren’t giving young black comics with raw material an opportunity. •

The platform became so powerful that it opened doors for up-and-coming comics who are now millionaires and legends in the comedy game. •

It helped launch careers like #MartinLawrence, The original host of DCJ, #BernieMac, #DLHughley and so many more.

Meet Audrey Esi Swatson, 21 Ghana's Youngest female commercial pilot

At just age 21, Audrey Esi Swatson, has made a name for herself as Ghana’s youngest female commercial pilot.

Audrey who hails from Saltpond in Accra Ghana is said to have nurtured the dream right from childhood.

She attended University of Ghana Basic Schools, Legon, while her secondary education was at Ghana Christian International High School, Dodowa.

A fluent English, Fanti and Twi speaker, at age 18, the goal getter got admission at Mach1 Aviation Academy in South Africa, where she acquired skills to achieve her dream of becoming a pilot.

Notably, her first solo flight during her flight training was at age 19, on the 4th of April, 2016. She later acquired her private pilot license that same year .

At just 21 Audrey Esi Swatson holds the prestigious commercial pilot license to the standards of the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

Speaking about her journey and giving advice, Audrey said; "The journey has been tough and full of challenges.

My flight training experience with Mach1 Aviation Academy has developed my ability to operate in a fast-paced ,high-performing organization , reinforced the requirement to make sound decisions in a sometimes ambiguous environment, lead by example, and deliver results with little margin for error . I had the privilege of flying with some truly inspirational, selfless flight instructors who embodied fortitude, grit, resilience, courage and integrity.

To anyone who is interested in pursuing an aviation career, set specific goals, take one day at a time yet having a long-term vision and plan.

Sorry I’m so behind on posting Black History Doodles! Here is Nick Cave is an American fabric sculptor, dancer, and performance artist. This drawing is of him and one of his sound suits. “Soundsuits are sculptural costumes enveloping the wearer's body in materials including but not limited to dyed human hair, sisal, plastic buttons, beads, wire, sequins, and feathers. Soundsuits camouflage the body, masking and creating a second skin that conceals race, gender, and class, forcing the viewer to look without judgment. In using everyday objects, Cave can create an atmosphere of familiarity while rearranging the objects into interpretive representations of both social and material culture.” My doodle doesn’t do justice to his actual work so please look up Nick Cave and watch videos of his work! They are vibrant and pull of color and movement.

As a WHITE man concerning black history month and the black community I'm going to say this.

Should we really be impressed by the fact that one month out of the year, we hear about "black history". Is it really truly black history or is it his story? Is it a month to tell true facts or is it a month to brainwash and mislead black people into believing misinformation that is given?

Should we be impressed by this so called black history when the national anthem was written by a white slave owner, Francis Scott Key?
Should we be impressed by companies like Amazon who does not have to pay company taxes, who raises the pan-african flag?

Does the United States Corporation really care about the black community when it comes down to it?
I'm not one to say I know what the black man and black woman go through in this country. One thing is I don't let the color of my skin, where I was born, or the attitude of racially bias determine what I think is truth concerning the truth of this so called country who can't stop lying and deceiving people.
The truth of the matter is that the black community shouldn't believe what they see with just one month of the year but the 11 other months that are not black history months.
How many inventions were invented by the black man that the white man took credit in accordance to the information that has been given? How many know that the blacks built the white house?
Do They The People truly have an agenda as they always have in the land of the free that truly benefits the US Corporations first and foremost?

The United States is not the savior of the black community.
I repeat. The United States is not the savior of the black community.

February 22, 1983: A little-known congressman named Harold Washington won the Democratic mayoral primary.

By the time he won the general mayoral election on April 12, 1983, he had become a political and cultural phenomenon.

Washington was the 1st African-American Mayor of Chicago, serving from 1983 until his death in 1987.

You never know when you’ll run into people who make you feel welcome. @theawkwardtraveller went to Jordan and got more than she expected.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“When you travel, especially as a black woman, you almost expect to look like an outsider. If you aren't traveling to a country in the Afro Diaspora, you can almost predict being stared at or someone asking about your hair. It's basically a given.

However, during my most recent trip to Jordan, that didn't happen at all. Jordan itself is just hours from the continent of Africa, and Jordanians come in all shapes, shades, and sizes. Many people outside of the Middle East might think that being Black or Arab is mutually exclusive, but they're not. Afro-Jordanians are FROM the Jordan Valley, as far back as they can trace their ancestry. The fact that I can see people in the community that literally look LIKE ME was incredibly heartwarming and inspiring.

I stayed at a desert camp, Captain's Camp, and every night there was a huge feast for the guests. I was in Jordan, but suddenly I was also transported back to my grandmother's house, whenever it was someone's birthday. The camp chefs became the uncles I grew up with, who would laugh and joke about which one of them had the best BBQ. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
'Do you speak Arabic?' One of the staff asked, offering to wrap a khimar (headscarf) around my head. I shook my head, but he grinned. 'ant eayila,' he translated. 'You are family.'
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And of course, there was dancing, SO MUCH DANCING. Even after solemnly swearing I can't dance (really, I can't!), my new friends looped their arms under mine and carried me into the dance circle. I learned traditional dances from the region, but we all put our own swagger into the steps.

I fell into my bed, exhausted, but with a smile. I didn't expect to feel at home in Jordan. I didn't expect to see myself in the locals. Yet there I was, quads burning from dropping it low and the impending food coma lulling me to sleep under the stars. I didn't expect to close my eyes and feel like I belonged. But travel has a way of reminding you to expect the unexpected. #blackhistorymonth"
