Yesterday was world Pangolin day - a day to celebrate and raise awareness around a species in crisis...
.
🎥 by @alexbraczkowski
.
Pangolins are the most trafficked species on the planet. They are caught and smuggled predominantly for their scales which are ground up into powder and used in Asian medicines to "cure" anything from asthma to cancer. Just like rhino horn, there is no medicinal value, as the scales are essentially keratin - the same as our nails and hair
.
There are eight species of Pangolins, four in Africa and four in Asia. For many years, the Asian species were the primary target of poachers and traffickers. Given their numbers have now reduced so much smugglers are turning to the African species. As a result, more than half a million have been smuggled from Africa to Asia in the past three years rendering two of the world’s eight species critically endangered
.
There are some amazing organisations who dedicate their lives to protecting these amazing animals. You can find out more at the websites below:

Who am I to know my place?
I run and I hide, I don’t feel safe.
I seek respite, I hide my face.
You seek my scales.
You’ve sealed my fate.

The Pangolin is a shy and harmless mammal, believed to be the 'world’s most trafficked mammal with tens of thousands being poached each year. They are being killed for their scales for use in traditional Chinese medicine and for their meat, a delicacy for some in China and Vietnam.' @natgeo

"Being driven to a fate of extinction we are at risk of losing one of our most peculiar and prehistoric-looking creatures due to pure ignorance. It has been proven scientifically that their scales have no medicinal quality, yet their numbers are still in decline as demand has risen in past years." @donalboyd

According to recent studies at South China Agricultural University, researchers are saying that the pangolin could be an intermediary host for the novel coronavirus.

Pangolins are the world's most trafficked mammal, other than humans, accounting for as much as 20% of all illegal wildlife trade. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), more than a million pangolins were poached in the decade prior to 2014. •

Happy World Pangolin Day!

Did you know that pangolins are the most trafficked mammal in the world?  These harmless creatures are being poached relentlessly for the blackmarket trade in their scales and meat.  Every day approximately 300 pangolins are killed, pushing the species closer and closer to extinction.

At @focusedconservation, our investigators are dedicated to protecting these incredible animals and ending the illegal wildlife trade before it’s too late.  Our team has carried out numerous operations targeting pangolin traffickers and is responsible for seizing and arresting offenders in possession of more than 50kgs of pangolin scales in just the last six months.

At the current rate, the pangolin may disappear before many even know it exists.  Help us spread the word today (and every day) so that pangolins don’t become the next silent extinction.

Happy World Pangolin day! This past year millions of pangolins across Asia and Africa have been captured and slaughtered for their scales - used in traditional medicines and their meat - consumed as an a expensive delicacy. Making them the most illegally trade species of wildlife - This insatiable demand will drive this incredible animal extinct. We have to stop the illegal wildlife trade - for good! @tikkihywoodtrust @restnamibia and @vietnamwildlife do fantastic work to rehabilitate and protect pangolins. 📷- @paulhiltonphoto #endwildlifecrime #pangolins #pangolintrade #illegalwildlifetrade #extinctionisforever #sixthmassextinction

Today is #worldpangolinday !
Last year between July and August/September we got many many sightings of pangolins, and today I’m sharing my favourite one! This one was so relaxed and at ease with us that he gave us the most special sighting! We were just sitting on the ground watching him in the distance (📸 1) and all of a sudden he started walking straight towards us (🎥 2)!! We couldn’t believe it and we just froze (which is why the video is so blurry!) until he stopped about 2m from us (📸3) and then moved on to rest under a close by tree (📸4) - it was an amazing sighting!
I will always remember this sighting as it’s ultra special to be in the presence of the most trafficked mammal in the world!
Let’s spread the word today (and always) for these guys! I wouldn’t want to live in a world where they didn’t exist

Was glaubt ihr?

In honor of #WorldPangolinDay, here are a few facts about these curious creatures:

🔸 Pangolins are the only mammals covered in scales
🔸 A single pangolin can eat up to 20,000 ants a day
🔸 When threatened, pangolins curl into a tight ball
🔸 They are the most trafficked mammals in the world
🔸 Pangolins are a critically endangered species

In 2019, Gorongosa’s wildlife vets and rangers rescued and treated 32 pangolins threatened by poaching and illegal trafficking. When you sip Elephants Never Forget, 100% of the profits support wildlife conservation activities such as these in @gorongosapark.

⭐️ Today is World Pangolin Day!  This is the world's most trafficked mammal, milliosn have lost their life to the illegal widlife trade where their meat and scales are in high demand on the black market. This year, perhaps more than any other, the pangolin is at the forefront of media headlines, discussing  the possibility that pangolins may have been the key vector species (via bats) in the spread of novel corona virus - and many scientists have long thought pangolin could be intermediate host for the virus. Rhino Revolution proudly run a Pangolin Protection Programme. However rehabilitating individual animals is only one part of the solution and to protect pangolins we believe it is critical to work in a holistic, collaborative way. Therefore, we work closely with anti-poaching, education and community outreach specialists - so we can all learn, share best practice, and understand who the key influencers are.  Please share this post and help raise awareness. Happy #worldpangolinday to our walking pinecone bois!
Pangolins are so awesome because they look like armadillos, but they are in fact a type of anteater. These guys are found in Africa and in Southeast Asia.
Unfortunately, pangolins all over are a critically endangered species as their scales are sought after for Chinese traditional medicine, which has been proven many times that it does not work as a cure. Once more, if what is being spread about the coronavirus is true, the pangolin population will be suffering from that as well.
We need to save the pangolins as they are just as important to the ecosystems as a bee is for pollination. If these critters go extinct, there will be more insects spreading as pangolins eat insects like ants and termites.
Please help save the pangolin! You can do so by clicking on the link in my bio to learn more about pangolins on @wwf

World Pangolin Day falls on the third Saturday in February of every year, and that is today.

Pangolins are insectivorous meaning that their diets consist mainly of ants and termites! When threatened, they curl up into a ball and uses their scales as armor! How amazing is that!

However,

Arguably the MOST trafficked animal in the world, although being listed in Appendix I of CITES- Pangolins are well known for their scales where believes are that they possess medicinal purposes. And yet we know that their scales are not that different from the nails that we have. Every year an estimate of 100,000 Pangolins are trafficked to China and Vietnam.
To make things gloomier, Pangolins was recently claimed to be of the host of the Covid-19. Maybe this would hinder the market value for their scales?

It's time we stopped supporting illegal wildlife trade be it from pets to consumption for whatever the reason may be.
EVERY ONE of us can make a difference by phoning in your local authorities and the easiest ANY one can do is saying NO to wildlife products.

Happy World Pangolin Day!
It’s so important to raise awareness about these amazing little creatures! It’s heartbreaking to think they are the most poached and illegally trafficked animal in the world 😞 Like all endangered animals, they need our help to save them from extinction due to human abuse.
I will always remember my time working with them ❤️ And I am thankful that there are charities like @vietnamwildlife out there doing what they can to save these little ones 🙌🏼

What is * World Pangolin Day * about for you? For us, it's just as much about people as it is about pangolins. Today is about celebrating those committed to their protection and, here in the Central African Republic, we celebrate our #pangolinguardians, without whom our work would not be possible. The following are caregivers who have helped rehabilitate wild pangolins that were rescued and eventually released into the surrounding forest.

1st - Komo with Koki
2nd - Armand with Pangy
3rd - Likemo with Mata
4th - Mandende with Ndima

So, whether you're out there studying their ecology, negotiating to improve domestic policy and legislation, investigating and combatting the illegal trade, organizing a fundraiser, training wildlife rangers, rescuing, healing, and releasing individuals in order to give them a second chance, or simply using your voice to champion the cause - we salute you. Our tireless efforts are making a difference worldwide and pangolins stand a better chance because of you. Happy #WorldPangolinDay!

Today is #WorldPangolinDay. It seems fitting, therefore to be reading about the @bornfreefoundation funded hospital at the Sangha Pangolin Project in Central African Republic 👍🏻🏥.
.
Pangolins are the most trafficked mammal in the world, with conservative estimates suggesting that at least 10,000 pangolins are trafficked each year. .
They are killed for their scales; which are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine — under the belief that they have healing properties. Their scales are in fact made from keratin. The same substance as our fingernails — and scientifically, they have the same kinds of healing properties as our fingernails too = zero! 🚫.
.
Slow moving and lacking teeth, their primary defense is curling up into a ball, making them easy targets for poachers. Their meat is considered a delicacy in China and Vietnam, and their scales are also used in fashion accessories.
.
More than 1 million have been poached since 2000. .
You can support pangolins and the @sanghapangolinproject by adopting a pangolin through Born Free. Head to www.bornfree.org.uk/adopt

Happy World Pangolin Day!⁣

Pangolin comes from ‘penggulung,’ the Malay word for roller – the action a pangolin takes in self-defence. ⁣

A startled pangolin will cover its head with its front legs, exposing its scales to any potential predator. If touched or grabbed it will roll up completely into a ball, while the sharp scales on the tail can be used to lash out. These wonderful creatures are nocturnal and feed on ants.⁣

Pangolins are thought to be the most trafficked wild mammals in the world because of their supposed, but unproven medicinal benefits and as a culinary delicacy. ⁣

In two record-breaking seizures in the space of a week in April 2019, Singapore seized a 14.2-ton shipment and and a 14-ton shipment of pangolin scales — from an estimated 72,000 pangolins — coming from Nigeria. ⁣

Indonesia still has no confirmed coronavirus, or Covid-19, cases.

This despite boasting the largest population, by far, in Southeast Asia, and over two million Chinese tourists annually.

In spite of their no case status, Indonesia has been prepping for the possibility of an outbreak.

One of their earlier measures was to try and get bat, one of the rumoured possible carriers of the disease, off their menus.

One of the areas impacted by the eradication of bats off their menu was a market in Sulawesi Island.

Tomohon Extreme Market
The unassuming market is located in Tomohon, a small city with a population of about 91,000 people, in North Sulawesi.
One of the attractions there is the Tomohon traditional market, better known as the Tomohon extreme market. “The Extreme market in Indonesia is a place where all kinds of animals face extreme/torturous deaths. Dogs, cats, pigs, etc are skinned alive, bludgeoned, and blow torched to death. The most horrific and cruel acts one can imagine are inflicted upon these poor defenseless animals.” •

Lions are the kings of the jungle because of their raw power, strength and fear no other animals. Right? However, they break off a hunt to avoid crossing a black rhino's path.

New study of illegal hunting and bushmeat trade in Angola identified major trade route between provinces of Bengo and Uíge, where many species are sold, including pangolins. Despite legislation protecting the species and banning hunting, the researchers saw pangolins and their scales for sale in local markets and along roads. The authors believe lack of enforcement by local authorities means the issue of illegal hunting and bushmeat trade goes ahead undeterred. These studies are vital in understanding the illegal trade of pangolins worldwide to identify where and how it occurs, as well as how it can be stopped.

In conjunction with remote support from CCF's Founder and Executive Director Dr. Laurie Marker, the team in Somaliland has spent several days struggling with nutritional issues in the most recent group of three orphaned cubs.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The cubs were confiscated from the illegal pet trade and cubs this young (~4 weeks) often do not make it through the trauma of being taken from the wild. We are hopeful that we can help them with proper medical care and nutrition. Please support CCF's programs like our work fighting the illegal wildlife trade by making a donation today. 🐱

Despite all the attention rhino poaching receives in mainstream media, very few people truly understand the complexities of this problem. It goes far beyond conserving one of Africas most iconic species. The illegal wildlife trade is the 4th largest illegal global trade (after drugs, counterfeiting and human trafficking), and rhino horn - along with pangolin scale, elephant ivory and tiger parts - are at the forefront of this problem. International criminal syndicates and even terrorist organisations exploit wildlife and those in poverty to fund their causes, and it is important that we continue to document the plight of endangered species and encourage further attempts to save a species from the greed of man.

The illegal wildlife trade is now the fourth most profitable form of trafficking in the world, after drugs, guns and humans.

Pangolins, elephants, tigers, sharks, European eels, seahorses, rhinos- the list seems endless. Whether it’s one person smuggling a critically endangered Chinese giant salamander into the uk in a cereal box, or two people smuggling 13 critically endangered San Salvador Rock Iguanas into England by stuffing them into socks in their suitcases, or professional criminals smuggling millions of critically endangered pangolin’s scales into Asia- it is clear the illegal wildlife trade isn’t going away...
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
• Don’t buy, sell or smuggle wildlife
• Report any illegal or suspicious activity- remember to give as much detail as possible (but ensure your own safety)
• Do your research before participating in any wildlife-based activities- don’t support street animal photos, elephant riding, products containing wildlife. 📷 San Salvador Rock Iguana / seacology.org

The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) is suing the Chinese Forestry Department over the deaths of eight rescued pangolins held under its care. The non-profit organisation, working to protect the environment and biodiversity in China, says the department's alleged negligence led to this major environmental loss, which needs to be compensated for. Following the seizure of 32 live pangolins by officials, CBCGDF had requested it help look after eight pangolins that had survived the initial quarantine period so they could be released back into the wild, however they were denied. The government department defended itself, stating the difficulty in caring for captive pangolins, but the non-profit organisation believes the pangolins' deaths, as well as other pangolins who have died in the care of the department over the last few years, should be investigated. If you saw my photo of the captive bred tiger in South Africa a few days ago, here are a couple of videos I captured during my time on this massive captive breeding operation just outside of Johannesburg, South Africa. The lions and tigers are bred like chickens in overcrowded conditions. Few people know that South Africa could have as many as 14 000 lions in captivity, and almost no information is known about how many tigers. I have spent my life working to expose such operations with @sharon.guynup and just wrapped up a more than year-long investigation on captive tigers in the USA. In South Africa, such breeding farms serve two main purposes; 1) they are cub getting operations where tourists can visit, get their picture taken with a lion or tiger and pay a fee for a photo and 2) when the cats get too big they are traded or sold to another breeder or shot by trophy hunters in artificial conditions. Many lions are also killed for their bones and exported to southeast Asia and China where they are sold into the medicinal trade (often marketed as tigers because people often cannot tell the difference). The number of lion skeletons that are allowed to leave South Africa has increased from 800 to 1500. We still have little understanding on how this will affect wild tigers and lions in future but there is clearly a demand. When visiting South Africa say no to cub petting operations and lion farms like this one! Follow me @stevewinterphoto for more shots of wildlife and the threats they face around the world. .

Only two cubs remain from the group of 12 that were confiscated last week. Sadly, seven cubs died within the first day of their arrival. The two surviving cubs have a good appetite, which gives us hope for their continued survival.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our visiting veterinary student from France, Helene, named them Janet and DJ. Helene has been doing a great job looking after them and we will all miss her when she returns to school in Romania soon. 🐱
