#OTD in 1870, Hiram Revels was officially seated in the U.S. Senate, becoming the first African American to hold the position. A month prior to his election, southern white politicians were determined to block him from being seated in Congress. Because the U.S. Constitution requires at least nine years of citizenship to join the senate, some declared Revels's election null and void. African Americans were not declared legally citizens until the passage of the 14th Amendment in 1868, two years prior. However, Revels overcame the dubious claims and objections—the U.S. Senate voted 48 to 8 to seat Revels.

On this day in 1941, Dutch citizens went on strike to protest the brutality of Nazi pogroms. Germany invaded Holland in March, 1940, with Arthur Seyss-Inquart put in place as Reichs Commissioner. In early 1941, the NSB or National Socialist Movement, a Dutch party loyal to the Nazi’s, fronted by Anton Mussert, developed groups made up of commando and WA (Weerbaarheidsafdeing) soldiers to go around the streets of Amsterdam and paint “No Jews Allowed” signs on shop windows, and to destroy Jewish property. To protect themselves, Dutch young men set up their own groups, which led to fighting between them and the Nazis and even the death of a Nazi. Soon after, the owner of a Jewish ice cream parlour mistakenly sprayed a German soldier with ammonia gas, thinking he was a Dutch Nazi. He was promptly put to death. Then, a pogrom of 425 Jewish men followed in retaliation: they were sent to Buchenwald. This was what inevitably led to the strike, an event led by Piet Nak and Willem Kraan that wasn’t expected to amass much support. It called for all citizens of Amsterdam, on February 25th, to stop work altogether, to stand united. What happened was monumental. It started with the trams that stopped running, which immediately helped people notice something was amiss. More and more business closed up shop and it caught the Nazis completely off guard. It lasted 2 days and by the end, 200,000 people had taken part. It would remain the largest act of defiance of its kind against the Nazi regime, the most incredible show of support for the Jews anywhere. On the 26th, the strike ended, and dire consequences ensued. Kraan was caught and put to death, along with another key supporter, Henk Sneevliet, but Nak survived. Many others also died and bosses were ordered to report which of their workers took part - though most didn’t. The February Strike should be remembered because though it didn’t end the inhumanity inflicted by the Germans, it was an extremely rare occasion where non-Jewish people risked all for their fellow man, a beautiful show of strength and camaraderie in times of ultimate peril. #history #otd #onthisday #februarystrike #wwii #holocaust #dutchhistory #neverforget

February 25, 2005 - "Cursed" is released theatrically in the US & Canada.
The "Scream" (1996) team, director Wes Craven & writer Kevin Williamson, turn their attention to werewolves in "Cursed", a diverting but toothless horror comedy. Ellie & Jimmy (Christina Ricci & Jesse Eisenberg) are siblings who discover that there are hidden advantages to lycanthropy, from unexpected sporting skill to raw sex appeal. Unfortunately, the werewolf that nibbled them in the first place is still prowling around their apple-pie Los Angeles neighborhood, hungry for a second helping.
.
"Cursed" has certainly lived up to its name from the beginning: initially suffering from re-shoots, rewrites, & cast members dropping out while filming, then falling victim to a severe snipping of gory moments in order to secure a PG-13 rating. The result is an almost fatally compromised product, a werewolf movie for the Buffy generation that has only a smidgen of that show's audacity & sophistication. Where the threatened teens of "Scream" knew their horror clichés inside out, the "Cursed" gang doesn't seem to have the first clue as they wander blithely into darkened cellars like lambs to the slaughter. The actual slaughtering, meanwhile, is conspicuous by its absence; there's (unfortunately) barely a drop of blood on display.
.
Still, it's not all bad news. Ricci makes a delightful werewolf, ecstatically sniffing out steaks & nosebleeds like a carnivorous pooch. There's a were-Labrador, a charming gay subplot, & the ever lovely Judy Greer steals the film with an outstanding turn as a fiendish, highly-strung PR girl. "Cursed" is no "Scream", but at the very least it's a hip, modern, & fun take on the werewolf mythos. And although it often gets a bad rep, when viewed simply as an old-fashioned popcorn-muncher, it really succeeds quite well folks.

#OTD in 1885, Princess Alice of Battenberg was born in the presence of her great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, in the Tapestry Room at Windsor Castle. In 1947, her son, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, married Princess Elizabeth, heiress presumptive to the throne of the United Kingdom. In 1949, Princess Alice founded an order of nuns modelled after the convent founded by her aunt, Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna of Russia. She died on 5 December 1969 at Buckingham Palace.

25thFeb1834- Packing – very fine morning F48 ½° at 9 ¾ at which hour breakfast with my father and Marian, and settled with Charles Howarth and gave order to him for the posts to be hold after the model he shewed me in wood, some while with my aunt and a minute or two in the little breakfast room and off to York at 10:45/50 –at Leeds at 1:22 – off again in 4 minutes – at Tadcaster at 3:22 – off again in 6 minutes – stopt a minute or two in passing at Myers’s to order the under part of the carriage to be put in thorough order, and to be ready by Monday morning saying I would send it back in ½ hour. At Heworth Grange at 4 ¾ - Miss W- very glad to see me – but she looked not quite brilliant about the eye, has she head and heart enough for me? –dinner at 6 ¼ in 31 minutes – coffee at 8 – read along the first 18 pages ‘Gilly’s Waldensian Research’. She siding and labelling all the cannisters I brought her. Went to our rooms at 11 3/4. Her cousin just came the first time this twelve month or should have gone to bed without drawers on for the first time ever with her.

1835- Pretty good one last night but she said I had half killed her and she would have no more and she awoke me two or three times in the night to tell me she could not sleep. Read Doctor Philip on Indigestion - breakfast at 9 ½ in about an hour - form 10 ½ to 3 ¼ with A- looking over and helping her to settle the joint property coal account with Messers Hinscliffe and Stocks - out with A- at 3 20 for 25 minutes in the walk - rain sent us home... till nine and a quarter writing for A- copy of what she should write to her sister about the coal account. Wrote for her this morning what she should write about Patterson’s bond.

On this day in 1601 the Earl of Essex, favourite of Elizabeth I, was executed for trying to lead an uprising against the queen. He was granted the favour of a private execution instead of being publicly beheaded on Tower Hill. Image from our recent Elizabeth I and Her Spymasters event.

Happy birthday to pioneering blues singer Ida Cox, born #OTD in Toccoa. Cox began her career as a vaudeville performer, but when the popularity of vaudeville shows began to fade, she transformed herself into a formidable blues singer. She recorded her first blues songs in 1923 for the Paramount label, which dubbed her the "Uncrowned Queen of the Blues." By 1929, Cox had recorded seventy-eight songs, most of which she had written herself.

United States, 1862 Legal Tender Series, One dollar. On this day in 1862, President Lincoln signed the first Legal Tender act. The beginning of 1862 found the Union's expenses increasing, and the government was having trouble funding the escalating war. U.S. Demand Notes—which were used, among other things, to pay Union soldiers—were unredeemable, and the value of the notes began to deteriorate. The first "Greenbacks" were issued as a type of Fiat currency. This ended the long-standing policy of using only gold or silver in transactions, and it allowed the government to finance the enormously costly Civil War long after its gold and silver reserves were depleted. Soon after the war began, the federal government began to run low on specie. Several proposals involving the use of bonds were suggested. Finally, Congress began printing money, which the Confederate government had been doing since the beginning of the war. The Legal Tender Act allowed the government to print $150 million in paper money that was not backed by a similar amount of gold and silver. Many bankers and financial experts predicted doom for the economy, as they believed there would be little confidence in the scheme. There were also misgivings in Congress, as many legislators worried about a complete collapse of the nation’s financial infrastructure. The paper notes, called greenbacks, worked much better than expected. The government was able to pay its bills and, by increasing the money in circulation, the wheels of Northern commerce were greased. The greenbacks were legal tender, which meant that creditors had to accept them at face value. In 1862, Congress also passed an income tax and steep excise taxes, both of which cooled the inflationary pressures created by the greenbacks.
Another legal tender act passed in 1863, and by war’s end nearly a half-billion dollars in greenbacks had been issued. The Legal Tender Act laid the foundation for the creation of a permanent currency in the decades after the Civil War. #numismatics #numismatist #19thcentury #otd #onthisday #uscivilwar #coincollection #currency #history #ushistory #papermoneycollection #papermoney #money #dollar

Today in postal history, African-American letter carriers in the District of Columbia served as pallbearers
at the 1895 funeral of Frederick Douglass, social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman.

Roy Finkenbine wrote: The most influential African American of the nineteenth century, Douglass made a career of agitating the American conscience. He spoke and wrote on behalf of a variety of reform causes: women's rights, temperance, peace, land reform, free public education, and the abolition of capital punishment. But he devoted the bulk of his time, immense talent, and boundless energy to ending slavery and gaining equal rights for African Americans. These were the central concerns of his long reform career. Douglass understood that the struggle for emancipation and equality demanded forceful, persistent, and unyielding agitation. And he recognized that African Americans must play a conspicuous role in that struggle. Less than a month before his death, when a young black man solicited his advice to an African American just starting out in the world, Douglass replied without hesitation: "Agitate! Agitate! Agitate!

Remember this? Last year, in tribute to the 16,000 Allied airmen who gave their lives before, during and after D Day, we built the largest model WW2 fighter plane ever built.
Today marks the 80th anniversary of the first flight of that unsung hero, the Hawker Typhoon.
