Injuries should not prevent you from doing the things you love‼️ You may not like it at the time. But if treated and rehabilitated correctly, injuries can teach you so much about your body.

1. You appreciate your body more when you’re rehabilitated. Simply being able to walk and do your normal daily routines can be too much under certain injuries. Let alone being able to return to your sport.
2. You take the time to do research and try new exercises that you wouldn’t have done otherwise. You learn about your treatment methods, rehabilitation exercises and exercises to help prevent injury from reoccurring, (known as Prehabilitation)... 3. You discover you can improve in your sport by trying new techniques. Whilst you may not be able to do certain movements the way you used to, you may find that your new techniques are better than your old ones anyway.

I have dislocated both my shoulders, herniated my lumbar discs multiple times, and this year dislocated my knee joint. This has forced me to move in different ways in MMA, be more strict in throwing kicks and punches, and not using too much power and strength at the wrong time during grappling.

Myofascial Dry Cupping here at @cotswold_sports_and_beauty has additional techniques involved within Dry Cupping Therapy. Active movement which is a sliding technique is used whilst the client actively moves the associated joint. Soft Tissue Release which is where the muscle is put into a shortened & relaxed position, whilst multiple cups are applied, then the joint is moved actively or passively. This is great at producing a quicker stretch response & restoring range of movement. Then there is movement which is where static dry cupping is combined with stretching modalities. Using these techniques, the stretch that is produced in the soft tissue & the fascia leads to a relaxation effect within the muscle, which results improved range of motion & performance.
Initially the vacuum application of the cup pulls blood into an area. This leads to the effected tissue becoming saturated with fresh blood. This saturation can often leave a circular mark, which is consistent with a hicky or a love bite mark. However, this usually disappears after a day or so, & happens to a lesser extent on subsequent treatments. These marks can take up to 21 days for them to disappear. In many cases, within about a week.

This treatment is carried out with Sports Massage Therapy combined with Myofascial Dry Cupping.

Duration:-
Back - 1 hr, 15 mins for £50
Back & Legs - 1 hr, 45 mins for £60
Full Body - 2 hrs, 15 mins for £70

Any kind of knee pain or stiffness makes simple daily activities such as walking, going up or down the stairs, squatting, and standing up from a chair, difficult.

The number one complaint from someone experiencing any kind of knee problem is pain under or around the knee cap. This type of pain can greatly limit functional mobility.

Some people also experience stiffness in and around the knee making it difficult to move the joint. Others also have generalized weakness in that same leg further making it very difficult to stand in line at the grocery store or while doing the dishes and cooking meals.

Knee Injuries: Meniscus Tear
One common knee injury is a meniscus tear. This can be treated surgically or non-surgically depending on the severity of the tear in the knee, the menisci serve as a cushion between the two major bones in your leg: the femur or thigh bone and the tibia or the shinbone. The cartilage can become damaged during activity where the knee is forced to twist or rotate.

Symptoms of a Meniscus Tear
Common symptoms include pain, swelling and stiffness, especially when trying to fully straighten or bend your knee. Depending on the type of tear, you may also experience locking and clicking.

Good mind to muscle control of the scapula (shoulder blade) may help with many complaints of the shoulder, neck and upper back! Many people complain of shoulder or neck pain when attempting a pull up or chin up? Being able to position the scapula in a stable position at the bottom of a pull up is important in being able to execute the full exercise efficiently.
.
Martin demonstrates the scapula pull up, which is a regression from the full pull up. Can you see that he is just isolating the movement to the shoulder blades without even bending his arms? This is potentially how we would train someone before giving them a full range pull up. We would break down the exercise into smaller, more achievable movements and then build up from there.

Today, we're talking about shoulder mobility.⁣

Shoulder mobility and stability is absolutely essential when performing a number of lifts in the gym and required for overall shoulder health. I can't tell you how many clients I treat that are suffering from some form of shoulder related injury. You have to protect your shoulder people! ⁣

One exercise that I recommend to my clients for active rehabilitation is the wall drag. The wall drag is a simple, but effective movement for developing both mobility and stability. This is also a great warmup exercise prior to doing any work with the shoulders in the gym. Try it out, for 2-3 sets of 20 reps. Improve the endurance of your postural muscles by strengthening them, instead of just stretching them! As with life, it’s all about balance. If you like stretching and it makes you feel better - go for it. But if you are neglecting the strength component, you’ll only be bandaid’ing the issue. This is why I rarely prescribe stretching anymore to my patients, or if I do it’s used for immediate symptomatic relief.

Pulling exercises are great for improving strength in the upper back and shoulders, particularly the muscles that resist forward bending. Awesome for people who sit for extended periods of time or for those who lean or bend forwards a lot (🙋🏻‍♀️osteos*cough*).

But so often this is the absolute worst decision we can make.

Unless diagnosed as something that requires rest which is generally rare, we on the whole just need to get moving and improve our strength and the movements at each joint.
Pain can arise due to dysfunctions in our movement or generally through overuse. So I suggest you seek advice from a Physio or a Sports Therapist like myself to uncover the issue, get to the bottom of why it occurs and then devise an action plan to get back to full strength and being pain free.
Today with just the integration of one simple exercise we helped a young boy overcome a back pain that was getting him down and preventing himself from playing hockey. 10 minutes later and one exercise he felt 10x better.

Seek professional advice, get strong and enjoy your sport again.

We begin this A-Z with Arthritis. A very common condition which causes pain and inflammation in the joints, and is particularly in prevalent the adult population.
There are many different types of arthritis conditions, and three of most common types are:
Osteoarthritis- occurring as a result of wear and tear, and thinning of the cartilage in the joint capsule
Rheumatoid arthritis-the body’s own immune system attacks the lining of the affected joint capsule
Gout- caused by an excess deposit of uric acid in the body often obtained from high fatty foods, red meats, and sugary foods; leaving many crystal-like structures in the joint capsule

S&S:
The general signs & symptoms of arthritis are joint pain, stiffness and swelling (gout usually affects the big toe or fingers)

Treatment/ advice:
General anti-inflammatory products and medications such as NSAIDs are useful in treating all arthritis conditions. Products containing grape seed and other herbal products such devils/cats claw, turmeric, nettle, also provide anti-inflammatory and pain relieving effects.
For osteoarthritis, products which help rebuild the cartilage such as collagen, glucosamine, and hyaluronic acid are particularly useful. Additionally, supplements containing cherry, celery seed, and nettle help lower uric acid which is useful in tackling gout.
Incorporating exercise is also beneficial in treating arthritis. Range of motion activities and stretching eases joint stiffness and increases the ability to move joints through its full range. Strengthening muscles around the joint is also essential i.e. through isometric exercises, resistance/weight training, as well as low impact aerobic exercises which do not put too much stress on the joints such as cycling, rowing, swimming.

🏋🏽‍♀️There was found to be a strong association between low muscular strength in the adolescents and disability 30 years later. It is reasonable to suggest that given another 40 or 50 years, this clear association would have continued.⁣

👶🏻-👵🏻If you are 18 or 68 it is never too late to start. Regular activity combined with resistance/strength and cardiovascular training; 3-5x per week for approximately 30 minutes can be the difference between becoming a frail 60 old or a fit and healthy 80 year old!⁣⁣⁣

We have this conversation far too often with athletes and clients after they have had an injury. Typically, athletes and clients will return to a certain sport or activity after not doing it for awhile and will have pain or an injury. Any time someone is going to return to a sport or activity, it needs to gradually be reintroduced back into their training. By doing too much too soon, the body hasn't had time to adapt to the new stimulus and built up a tolerance to this increased stress. In turn, load exceeds capacity and an injury can occur or an athlete can experience pain due to not gradually increasing their training stress on their body.

After spending the last two weeks working one on one, intensly with a top level physiotherapist, sports educator and a personal psychologist every day, to create an effective and challenging program to support my body.
It was quite fascinating to fly again!
I have been dissecting the elements of my profession and trying to replicate them in a non skydiving environment, in order to come back to my sport as soon and as able as possible.
This process has challenged me, to think slightly different about what it means to be a professional airsport athlete. With a lot of help and support from the amazing professionals at @catosenteret I feel that I am starting to build a strong and ambitious training program, that will support my body and mind for the rest of my life. 🤘🏼
Yesterday, when I flew, I tried to come up with exercises which would challenge my balance, strength and awareness at the same time. I chose to fly on lower speeds, so that things would go a little slower and give me more time to save myself, if I needed to, this also made the session more like strength training. I wanted to practice keeping my body in a strong and straight position, to protect my spine, but also build strong muscle memory towards my posture, inside and outside the tunnel.
It was really REALLY fun, to experiment in this way! I feel lucky, for this opportunity to go back to basics and clean out my flying.
I think low speed is my new best friend!

I still think a lot about what happened to me four months ago, it's hard to believe that it actually happened... it almost feels like I have been dreaming.
The picture above was taken this weekend during my first flights back at @bodyflightswe in Gothenburg, Sweden. The second video was taken on the 4th August, the morning after my accident, just before I underwent a nine hour surgery to repair my broken body.
I remember clearly, laying on the beach knowing I was about to face maybe one of the largest challenges of my life. I took a deep breath and accepted the challenge, it felt horrible but relieving at the same time.
I made it my mission to get back from this in the best way possible and have basically been a recovering robot since...
This weekend I got to fly again and it felt incredible, it almost made the whole thing worth it, giving such a feeling of satisfaction.
It was a very special moment for me, I proved to myself that I can come back from this, 100%. I will continue with my profession, learn and teach others for many more years to come.
Thankyou universe and thankyou to my amazing body for recovering like a machine! ❤
And, of course the biggest thankyou to the love of my life @espenfadnes for your continued support and love. You are everything to me! 😘
