True story: one of the most difficult yoga poses for me is reverse table top.
Because it’s such a “simple” pose I can fall into a habit of being hard on myself for the uncontrollable shake that takes over as I press myself off the ground, and you can forget about me even attempting to turn it into a reverse plank.
But that kind of thought process just isn’t helpful. When it comes to tricky poses, each pose is different not only in every individual body but on any given day. The same goes for tricky situations in our lives. And leaving judgement at the door is TOUGH.
We are so conditioned to judge ourselves for the things we “can’t” do rather than looking at what we CAN do with joy and thinking: if I can do that, I can do anything.
So reverse table top is not a pose that comes naturally to me, but there are ways I can work with what my body does do naturally that will help me improve that pose. Plank and bridge are just two of them.
It may take a while for me to find reverse table top comfortable, or - quite honestly - it may never enter my practice fully. And that’s okay! Everyone’s practice, body and life are different and those differences should be celebrated instead of met with jealousy or judgement.
It’s a difficult thing to wean yourself off of comparing yourself to others or to the way you were yesterday, especially in the age of technology.
But hey! Insta just changed its format so you don’t see the number of likes on posts and I would say that’s a big positive step toward just enjoying what people have to share. And if insta can do it, so can you!!
Let’s all strive to live aware of how we judge ourselves and those around us, and try each day to leave that judgement at the door. Be kind to one another (and yourself!) #progressnotperfection 💛✌️☺️ .

Love my little well not so little family. I changed my whole life by eating better and working out. After having 4 children I was out of shape unhappy and didn't even want to look in the mirror. All that changed when I decided to change. Be healthy today for tomorrow .

“Forward bends are considered postures of surrender. They’re cooking poses. And you can’t really surrender if you’re trying so very hard. So we’re just going to breathe and relax and learn to stay in our forward bends in a nice peaceful way.” This description by AJ from @mindbodysoul in her #YogaWithAJ series is such a nice metaphor for approaching life. Vrschikasana

La Postura del Escorpión. Su nombre se debe, por supuesto, a la similitud de esta postura con la que adopta un escorpión a la hora de atacar. Al sentirse amenazada, la criatura curva su cola y ataca con el aguijón por encima de su cabeza.

Se trata, sin dudas, de una postura majestuosa y de gran dificultad. Requiere de la combinación de varios aspectos. Concentración, equilibrio, fuerza de brazos, fuerza abdominal, flexibilidad, y un gran dominio de las posturas de inversión son algunos de los factores de importancia a la hora de encarar Vrschikasana.

tomorrow is day 2️⃣ of #YogaShapeShifters & our shapeshifting creature is the KITSUNE, which literally means “fox” in japanese. 🦊 mostly portrayed as benevolent & sometimes as tricksters, the kitsune can transform into human form, wield mystical powers, & possess superior intelligence.

kitsune live a looong time, up to 1000 years, & have multiple tails. one tail is said to be its main tail—its source of life force & power. so naturally, japanese folklore says the only way to kill a kitsune is by chopping off all its tails. youch.

▪️Nesta edição da viagem à Índia, Pedro celebra 24 anos guiando grupos pela terra do Yoga. Esta jornada foge ao propósito da maioria das que se fazem à Índia. Não está centrada em visitar lugares históricos ou turísticos, nem em fazer compras, mas no próprio processo de crescimento pessoal do viajante. O foco está no Yoga e na descoberta de si mesmo. .
▪️O ritmo da viagem é muito mais suave que outras que fizemos anteriormente, pelo que por um lado não faremos aquelas longas viagens terrestres de cidade para cidade, e por outro, teremos a chance de desfrutar de cada lugar com calma, entrando de fato no ritmo de vida local para poder assimilar o ensinamento e fruir adequadamente a cultura e o modo de vida dos yogins. Quem acompanha o grupo? . .
▪️Ângela Sundarī é yogiṇī por nascimento (1966) e vocação. Pratica Yoga e estuda Vedānta há mais de 20 anos. Ela e Pedro viajam juntos pela Índia e o Oriente, onde o casal estuda, pratica, pesquisa e aperfeiçoa seus conhecimentos. Ângela compartilha com os grupos os segredos que aprendeu na estrada e coordena as atividades de Yoga de nossas viagens. .
▪️Pedro Kupfer nasceu no Uruguai em 1966. Descobriu o Yoga aos 16 anos de idade e pratica desde então. Escreveu e traduziu vários livros sobre Yoga, além de editar as revistas Yoga Journal, Cadernos de Yoga e o site www.yoga.pro.br. Desde a década de 1980 Pedro viaja regularmente pela Índia e outros países do Oriente. O casal mora atualmente em Portugal, na vila da Ericeira.

욕심을 부리는것도 욕심이랬거늘...

왜 이렇게 요가, 특히나 아사나는 욕심을 한가득 부리게 되는지 모르겠다. 욕심을 넘어서서 그냥 욕망덩어리 인 것 같은 느낌... 아사나를 하는 동안 무의식중에 이를 악물고 있음을 깨닫게 되노라면 마음이 쿵- 한다.

단언컨대 이렇게 무언가를 간절히 바라는 마음은 태어나서 처음인 것 같다. 그 마음을 아사나에 대한 욕심으로 풀어내서 문제지만... 그래도 그 아사나를 성공하기 위해 스스로 시간과 노력을 투자한다는게 참 신기하다. 왜냐면 나는 누가 뭘 시킨다고 하는 애가 아니니까... 대학생때도 그랬고 대학원생때도 그랬고 마음에 드는 과목만 공부하고 마음에 안드는 과목은 그냥 버리는 나였기에... 그리고 아사나를 성공하고 나서 얻는 성취감 또한 태어나서 처음 느껴보는 감정이다. 성취감이 가져다주는 짜릿함이 말그대로 아주 짜릿해 미치겠다. 그 날 하루 아무것도 안해도 벅차고 알찬 하루를 보낸 것 같고 뿌듯해 미치겠더라...

아무튼 또 말이 길어졌지만 결론은 욕심쟁이처럼 이를 바득바득 갈지말자. 내려놓았을 때 자연스레 내게 주어지는 것들이 있으니까. 될 때가 되면 알아서 되겠지 뭐. 아! 그리고 신기한게 매일같이 요통을 달고 사는 나인데... 드랍백인듯 드랍백이 아닌 저 동작을 몇 번 하고 나니 거짓말처럼 통증이 사라졌다!!!!!

back to Surya Namaskar A - the transition from Chaturanga Dandasana to Urdva Mukha Savanasana (High to Low Plank to Upward Dog) can be a struggle when upper body is weaker. Here’s an alternative version - instead of hovering the chest in Low Plank; lower knees to ground (to lessen the load on upper body). Resist the floor & lower chest & chin down, keeping elbows pointing back & hips slightly lifted. Hold for a sec b4 u move to Bhujangasana (Cobra) - flatten feet, slide body along to release hips down, then lifting the chest to activate the muscles across the upper back. This modification allows you to continue to work on strengthening the upper body but without quite as much load in the area.* Classes this week -

La patience est une qualité qu'il est difficile de cultiver dans cette vie contemporaine, où tout est synonyme de rapidité et d'empressement ⏱🛵💨

Notre égo désire ardemment que les choses aillent vite et dans son sens 👋🏼🐒 car il n’aime naturellement pas attendre, relativiser et persister lorsque cela demande un effort.
.
Pourtant, tout perfectionnement, toute maitrise, relève d'une étude et d'une mise en pratique lentes et progressives 👵🏼🐌

Pour le vérifier, il suffit d'observer la nature. Regardez l'arbre par exemple, il nait d'une graine, petite et fragile, qu'un oiseau pourrait manger d'un coup de bec 🌱🐦
Mais si les éléments propices à son développement sont réunis, il s'érigera vers le ciel malgré les tempêtes et les aléas des saisons, comme une immensité forte et stable 🌳✨🙌🏼

Il en est de même pour nous.
Apprendre à se connaître ➡️ découvrir et développer des activités qui nous nourrissent ➡️ relativiser et rester confiant dans les moments creux ou de doutes.

Avec une patience sans limite, le yoga développe et anime chaque cellule du corps, débridant et libérant des capacités de patience, d’endurance et de lâcher-prise conscient 🙏🏼✨

𝐻𝑜𝓌 𝓂𝓊𝒸𝒽 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝒸𝒶𝓃 𝑔𝒾𝓋𝑒?
Give without expecting anything in return, to give without expecting to bring more self value, to give without wanting to achieve self made goals and wishes? How much you are able to give with nothing just a pure intention of sharing? ‘

Been running these questions in my mind lately. This fall is pretty hectic for me; spreading myself everywhere. Feeling the constant pull from different sides & people (which I am all grateful for). Sometimes grasping those moments where I question what is the whole meaning behind all my work, yet again: what is the purpose of it all?
Going into my daily meditation and asana practice keeps me awake. Even though i am not able to find all the answers i seek (nor we ever will), i am able to connect and come slightly closer to the idea of giving intead of achieving. 💛
Baby steps.

If you want to increase your flexibility, practice these poses regularly 👍🏼 Consistency is key! I promise you’ll see results!

💖TIPS FOR INCREASING FLEXIBILITY💖
😊Modify! Bend your knees if you need to. As long as you’re feeling a good stretch you’re in the right place!

😬Don’t force anything! Developing flexibility takes time. Find that point where you feel the stretching sensation! It might be a little uncomfortable, but not sharp or painful. Forcing yourself into a pose you’re not ready for can lead to injury 🤕 I’ve learned this lesson the hard way 😫 No good!
.
😁Practice! Practice! Practice! I can’t stress this enough. There is no “quick” solution for increasing flexibility. The secret is, the more consistent you practice, the sooner you’ll see results!😜
.
🥰Freestyle movement! You don’t need to hold each pose perfectly still. Try to breathe, soften the muscles if you’re tensing or resisting & find some freestyle movement in each pose.

【𝑌𝑜𝑔𝑎 𝐵𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝑊𝑜𝑟𝑘𝑜𝑢𝑡 】🌻 This pose mainly depends on your back strength. 💪🏼 As soon as your hands grab your feet, you will feel a growing pressure on your back! - not a very comfortable sensation 😂 - but that’s what yoga is : always trying to find comfort in discomfort !
This pose is easy to stand still as long as your mind is strong enough.
Well, the truth is I really have to work on my mental strength while doing my yoga sessions 😩__________________________________________________________

High lunge for #renewvember
I love how this asana makes everyone look so well sculpted. Works perfectly on strengthening lower half of body, lengthening hip flexors, feels so good on gluteus after leg day, and lengthens spine. I love how bendy folks take this to another level by including some fun variations but I’m super stiff in this one. Have an awesome Sunday!😍

Self care is hard,
like really hard for me.
It always has been.
I’ve never been comfortable being kind and caring to myself even as a child. I’d say to mum and friends I felt riddled with guilt anytime I did anything fun or enjoyable just for me and they couldn’t understand me. .
My therapist 9 years ago also noted that my lacking ability to be unconditionally kind to myself was the missing piece to my puzzle and the only way to erase the trauma. .
I’m not punishing or forcing myself like I used to but I am rather a busy body and always take on a lot to keep this side of me happy and at ease.
I could lie and say I’ve nailed this demon but I won’t. I value honesty more than I value acknowledgement.
Taking a day off being productive is honestly one the hardest things for me to do. I weave small bits of self care into my day like my meditation, walking in nature and keeping my phone on silent but practicing the art of being instead doing on larger scale really is friggin hard. Still. .

Maybe writing this post is an act of self care because it’s not a pre planned piece, not a researched post, not an edited video or tutuoral. It’s just a photo of me and words falling out of my head now on the train home.

Today I woke feeling empty and heavy with fatigue from the first week back at school teaching. Boy was it busy! Nevertheless I wanted to be productive, I had it all planned out, yet I couldn’t muster anything.
My laptop remained shut.
My yoga was child pose for 15 mins.
My lunch was toast and chocolate.
My afternoon plan to write a chapter of my book and work on editing was instead spent at the hair dressers for my yearly cut! .

In so many ways today hasn’t been what I wanted or expected of myself but in so many other ways it feels like it’s just what I needed. 💚
