Lyrebird: (Woorail ~ Weringerong ~ Bulln-bulln in various Aboriginal languages)
🎧 SOUND ON....... These mostly ground dwelling native birds of Australia are well known for their mimicking abilities and spectacular tails - but they really take centre stage when in song and like many birds his voice is the prime way to woo nearby females.
Although these birds will sing throughout the entire year it is especially during the breeding season that they can be heard singing extensively for most of the day.
Their unique syrinx (vocal organs) enable them to mimic sounds of all types - how many birds can you identify from this short clip?
Quality is a bit grainy taken on my iPhone.

Koala forests play an important role in combating the effects of global climate change. Trees take CO2 from the atmosphere and through the process of photosynthesis convert it into organic carbon as they grow. As long as these trees do not decompose or burn, the carbon is safely locked away.

Aussie Ark and the Koala Ark project focus on species and habitat protection. Securing a future for Australia's Flora and Fauna.

DID YOU KNOW?

Koalas consume the excess vegetation, therefore, reduce the biomass that fuels frequent and intense fires.

During the rainy season, koala droppings act as nutrients for the regeneration of undergrowth, ensuring that the forests regenerate to sustain future life. These excrements also serve as food for insects and small rodents!

Recent rain across the Mid North Coast of NSW has provided some relief for the Manning River Turtle. Many turtles may have been saved from a catastrophic situation with the timely rainfall.
Even before the drought and fires, three years ago this turtle was declared endangered. Aussie Ark is proud to have collected the first members of the insurance population, as well as 12 eggs that were at immediate risk of predation. #aussieark #conservation #manningriver #drought #bushfiresaustralia #australia #endangeredspecies

This little cutie is a feather tail glider 😍The scientific name for this species means pygmy acrobat! Feathertail gliders can run up smooth bark eucalypt species and even run up a plane of glass. These gliders have been found nesting in meter boxes, telephone boxes and even in the roof and walls of houses! This is because these places are so warm! .

Aussie Ark staff alongside president @timswildlife, have collected the first Manning River turtles to begin the development of the insurance population.

Aussie Ark keepers have also rescued 12 eggs from a nest site that was at imminent risk of predation. The eggs were relocated to the Australian Reptile Park for incubation. Once hatched some of the hatchlings will be the first turtles release back into the wild.

The Manning River turtle facility would not have been built without the support of @turtleconservancy , @global_wildlife_conservation, Steber International, The Happy Wombat, @ausecosolutions , Manning River Steel Supplies, Kleinfelder and each individual who donated to the cause!
Thank you!

An update from @aussieark and the recovery efforts for affected wildlife in Australia: Life Support for Endangered Brush-Tailed Rock Wallabies
In early January 2020, Aussie Ark was invited by the New South Wales State Government to assess the situation of Brush-tailed rock-wallabies, sadly what was found were numerous deceased wallabies. Several from starvation and dehydration, whilst others were struck by a vehicle in search for food, water and shelter, as the area is not preferred wallaby habitat. Encouragingly up to 30 were found residing near waterbodies. These wallabies are now receiving food drops and ongoing remote camera monitoring until the situation improves.
Regionally, all of the Brush-tailed rock-wallaby sites have been incinerated or are at imminent risk of fire. Coupled with the nation’s worst drought in recent decades, limited food and water supply is wreaking havoc on populations.
Aussie Ark has committed to doubling its species recovery projects to create a new facility for the northern population of the species. The Ark currently has 7 purpose-built facilities that provide home for up to 45 wallabies.
You can help Aussie Ark by donating today - see the link in their bio. #aussieark #conservation #australia #upperhunter #barringtontops #endangeredspecies #wildlife

Eastern quolls (Dasyurus viverrinus): extinct on mainland Australia since 1960s primarily due to the introduction of feral pests.
The other day I ventured out to Booderee National Park to get a glimpse of the environment where a handful of eastern quolls from @aussieark + @rewildingoz were released. What a step in the right direction for our native marsupials! 👍🏼

Quokkas are one of Australia’s smallest wallaby species and arguably the cutest with their thick brown fur and round fluffy ears.
Once abundant across the mainland, that changed with the arrival of the Dingo around 3,500 years ago and then, even more so with the arrival of the fox in the late 1800’s.
Offshore islands became their refuge and today they are only found on a few islands off the coast of Western Australia and some small groups of quokkas still also inhabit the SW of the mainland in WA.

Southern Cassowary (or double-wattled Cassowary) are part of the ratite group of birds which include emus, rheas, ostriches and kiwis.
These incredible prehistoric looking flightless birds are native to north-eastern Australia and the tropical forests of New Guinea and nearby islands.
There are 3 extant species and the most common is the Southern Cassowary.
They are the third tallest and the second heaviest living bird and they are really shy by nature but if provoked they are capable of inflicting fatal injuries.
It’s the females too that are bigger and more brightly coloured ~ females can reach anywhere from 1.5 to 1.8m in height.
The casque is their most distinctive feature that sits above their eyes and begins to develop at around 2 years of age - useful for pushing aside dense foliage as they move through their rainforest home.
Cassowaries can run at up to 50km/h through the forest and they can jump up to 1.5m but that’s not all..... they are excellent swimmers capable of crossing wide rivers and able to swim in the sea.

Regent Parrots are endemic to the southern regions of Australia and it is the males that are much yellower in colour as this one pictured - (The females and juveniles are more green).
The Nullarbor Plain separates the 2 populations and even though the distance is vast between them the two groups look the same with only one being slightly paler than the other.
Whilst in the West the population is thought to be increasing - unfortunately to the east they are currently classed as endangered.

Green Tree Frogs are such cute little characters! 🐸

Green tree frogs can climb smooth surfaces by clinging with their belly skin and the pads on their toes. Their call is an extremely distinctive ‘wark-wark-wark’, which is only produced by the males.

Both males and females will produce a loud, high-pitched scream if taken by a predator that may surprise it into dropping the frog. The main danger to the green tree frog is the destruction of its habitat through wetland clearance and drainage.

Disease has also become an important factor, particularly a type of fungus called a chytrid fungus that attacks the frog’s skin. Researchers are currently examining the effects and spread of this pathogen very closely as it appears to have caused the decline of several species of frog both in Australia and South America.

"Dad, everything is dying"
Aussie Ark President, @timswildlife last week called a Native Wildlife State of Emergency in response to the mass devastation caused by the current wildfires and drought. Aussie Ark is committed to native wildlife conservation, this commitment extends beyond our work with species and habitat recovery to the species that call the Barrington Tops and Great Dividing Range home. Since last week’s wildlife crisis declaration, it is fair to say things have not gotten better.

Aussie Ark returned this week to assess the situation of Brush-tailed rock-wallabies, sadly what was found was devastating.
As fire continues to ravage Australia, Aussie Ark will continue to monitor, supplement feed and intervene where necessary. We remain committed to the cause, now and until the threat is clear.

Just a month to be back in Tasmania looking for its cracking wildlife with @japatta
This young Tassie devil was yawning before smashing a wallaby that mom had brought to the den, in Maria Island. Can't wait to be on that rock again!
