My office @gtfamilychiro volunteered at @ironmantri Traverse City 70.3 this morning. We got to peel wetsuits off athletes that were running out of the lake and into transition. 🙌 It was so much fun!! We were pretty dang good at it too. I work at the best place in town and it was awesome to get to hang out together outside the office. I hope all the athletes had a great race!

Out with the negative, in with the positive. Imagine the life you want to live, speak it into existence and watch your dreams manifest themselves. If you need help aligning your mind, body and spirit towards positivity, we're just a message or a phone call away! 🙏

So I ran into a chiropractor on my morning walk today.

We got to talking, and before I knew it, I was sitting on the park picnic table and he was working on my neck (😂 dont freak out, we see him at the park all the time and Mark was with me!) But heres the thing... my neck and back are a mess.

A nasty, painful, knotty mess, and I've been suffering from a pinched nerve in my neck on and off for a WHILE now. And I've always thought 👉 thanks Dental Hygiene, motherhood, and years of neglect.

But you know what he told me?? Sure, those things don't help... but a lot of it is due to STRESS. Stress that I carry around each and every day for years has been weighing heavy on my neck and shoulders... literally like a weight on my shoulders.

And the scariest part?😱 He said that because my neck is in SUCH rough shape, I am at a much higher risk of having a STROKE in my 30s because blood flow cant properly get to my brain (😳 maybe that explains a lot lol). But really, holy shit. I always think of myself as a healthy person...yet I always ignore the nagging pain in my neck, and do very little do TRULY de-stress. As much as I have significantly improved how I handle stress, deep down I am still a big stress ball.

But this opened my eyes. Health is about SO much more than diet and exercise, and the way we look on the outside.

Time to shift my focus from lifting heavy weights as often as possible, to slowing the eff down and decompressing. Think mindful walks, stretching, yoga, meditation, and breath work.

This is so out of my comfort zone because whenever I can fit in exercise it HAS to be hard and sweaty...but my body has been trying to tell me something for a long time that only now I realize.

Guys, stress is the silent killer. Whether its ongoing mental stress, or physical stress that we put our bodies through with too much high intensity exercise...sometimes you just need to SLOW DOWN.

Ps. Big smile in this picture because I felt so much better after his adjustment! But 1 adjustment ain't got shit on this mess lol

Redondo Beach, California Thoracic Outlet Treatment: bit.ly/2Yh6v4D

We see many auto injury patients in our Redondo Beach, California office and we see quite a few patients with thoracic outlet syndrome. The thoracic outlet is the bundle of nerves and blood vessels that travel through your neck and shoulder. These vital structures are susceptible to injury after a car crash. Fortunately, Dr Frank E. Kaden has years of experience helping auto injury patients recover from this type of problem.

HERE'S MY GO TO 3 WAY NECK STRETCH I RECOMMEND TO ALMOST ALL MY PATIENTS!
.
These are great stretches to perform throughout the day while sitting at your desk, if you're neck ever feels tight, or even patients with headaches.
.
Perform each stretch 30-60 seconds, 2-3x/day to receive the most benefits.
.
1️⃣ Place 2 fingers above your ear and slightly pull to the opposite side. This helps stretch your trapezius muscle.
.
2️⃣ Place 2 fingers behind the base of your skull and look down towards your armpit. This helps stretch your levator scapulae muscle.
.
3️⃣ Place your palm on your collar bone and look up into extension and slightly away. This helps stretch your sternocleidomastoid muscle.
.
Tag a friend and share the wealth!

When it’s hotter in the garage than it is outside in the #arizona 🌵 #summer sun ☀️ pushed hard where I could but the #plyometricworkouts arena bitch on my shoulders and neck so I have to take it easy. 😖. Yesterday, the #chiropractor 👨‍⚕️ordered another 90-minute deep tissue #massage 💆🏼‍♀️because I’m #AFU and he’s getting frustrated with the results on my treatments. This shit is getting expensive 💸 but it’s cheaper to practice the #selfcare now to save on medical bills in the future 🤷🏼‍♀️ #sunday #morning #plussize

Getting active outside gives your body a natural energy boost. So, why not make the most of the rest of summer and start taking your workouts outdoors? Here are 4 ways to workout outside:
.
1. Visit an outdoor gym - a great (and cheap!) way to get your heart pumping and sweat pouring while soaking up some of the great outdoors.
.
2. Hit the trails - BC offers a plenty of options for walking, hiking and jogging. Seek out a local trail or path and get some fresh air.
.
3. Parks aren't just for kids - engaging in physical activity in a park is an easy way to work some active time into your daily routine. .
4. Get your hands dirty - yard work or gardening might not exactly leap off the page as an active way to get outside, but think about it for a second: walking, lifting, digging, raking - all great ways to work toward your weekly goal of active minutes.
.

✅ Backpack Safety for Your Child
•
Backpack safety is very important to protect your child's spine. Preventing spinal issues from occurring is very important.
See 1-3 Below.
•
1️⃣ Proper Backpack Weight
•
This is perhaps the most important thing to consider for your child’s backpack safety. Your children should never carry more than 10 to 15 percent of their body weight in their backpack. Too much weight can cause stress on the spine and shoulders. It can also lead to Anterior Head Syndrome, which is the head being forward from the shoulders. Anterior Head Syndrome leads to increased stress on the upper back and lower neck. It also strains the muscles and can cause pain.
•
2️⃣ Proper Backpack and Structural Alignment
•
Make sure that your child is standing up straight and in proper structural alignment when wearing their backpack. Your child’s ear should be over the center of their shoulders and the shoulders should be over the middle of your child’s hips. Make sure that your child is not leaning forward and the head and shoulders are balanced. Also check that the backpack straps are evenly tightened so that the shoulders and head are level.
•
3️⃣ Choosing the Proper Backpack
•
The number one thing to look for in a backpack is to make sure that the backpack shoulder straps are padded and that the back is cushioned. This will prevent any aches and pain and will be easier on your child’s shoulders and back. The straps should be wide and not too thin. The more compartments that the backpack has, the better you will be able to distribute the weight evenly. A backpack with a waist strap, will help support your child’s lower back, especially if they are carrying a lot of books in the backpack. An alternative option to a backpack is a small roller bag.
•
✅ Preventing spinal issues from arising is one of the key foundations of health. The spine is the central structure of the body and if we put abnormal wear and tear on it at a young age, it can lead to chronic pain and dysfunction at an older age. It is important to educate your children on the benefits of keeping a healthy frame and spine.
•
😄 Have an awesome day everybody!
-Dr. Jim

Inspires confidence and courage with it’s unique blend of essential oils. It’s aligning and grounding, with a woodsy, floral aroma. It’s a bit spicy and a bit sweet. Like me! I loooooove Valor. This blend is a deep, dark blue color. Sooo pretty! I use it everyday. I carry the Valor Roll-On in my purse and use it with the Feelings Kit protocol (you can view this in my highlights). I apply it to the soles of my feet, as I say, “I am aligned.” and “I am complete.” I use it along my jawline, before bed, because I have a tendency to clench my teeth and Valor relaxes my jaw. Our daughter used it, down her spine, and on the soles of her feet, to help support alignment of her spine. She was diagnosed with scoliosis and we were willing to try anything, to help minimize the curvature of her spine, to keep her from needing a brace (FYI, she never ended up needing one and she no longer needs regular x-rays to monitor her spine!!!). I wear Valor, as perfume, for a sense of confidence. Valor IS courage. 𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺? ⁣

Leave a 💛 if you will work on yourself this week. We get comfortable with our partners wanting to fix everything for us. Remember this, nobody can fix things for us. It is up to you to work on yourself In order to grow. Be with someone who knows what you are working on with yourself, and motivates you to continue doing that rather than trying to take it on themselves.

Leave a 💛 if you agree👇Often we feel guilty or people may make us feel guilty for changing, growing and working towards our vision. It’s ok to outgrow people that are not growing and we don’t have to be negative or bitter towards them. We can continue with compassion, kindness and focus and guilt-free.

Do you encourage your clients to have a no-shoes rule in their house? ⠀
⠀
We track in more than just dirt and dog poop in on our shoes; we also track in pesticides, heavy metals, particulate matter, and other chemicals.⠀⠀
⠀
These chemicals buildup in the dust inside our homes, which we then encounter when we walk around, touch things, etc. ⠀
⠀⠀
Encourage your clients to take their shoes off when they come inside, or at the very least, switch to inside-only shoes! ⠀
⠀⠀
Bonus: this helps keep your house cleaner too! 🧹🧹🧹⠀⠀
⠀
Are you a no-shoe household??⠀

    IMPROVE YOUR TIGHT HIPS!
-
🎄What until the end to see if I improved!
-
🌲Hip Internal Rotation is one of the most common limitations I see in clients, and it can negatively affect your squat! Especially if you're trying to get into a deeper position! Give this stretch a try!
-
❄️Note - This is Hip Internal Rotation in Hip Flexion (Hip Bent.) You can also assess Hip IR in Hip Extension!
-
Here's How To Perform the Hip Internal Rotation Stretch!
-
⛄️Normal Range is around 40 degrees, but I've seen up to +/- 10 degrees
🎅🏻You will need a band for this stretch!
1️⃣First, assess your Hip Internal Rotation
Check my Post "Hip Rotation Assessment Post."
2️⃣Place the band just above the knee.
3️⃣Create tension on the band by stepping away from the anchor point.
4️⃣Take a half-kneeling position.
5️⃣Make sure to stay facing straight forward.
6️⃣The tendency is to rotate towards where the band is anchored.
7️⃣Let the band pull the knee in and relax for 10-20 seconds.
👉Don't forget to breathe! It can get intense!
8️⃣Push knee out and hold for a few seconds.
🔁Repeat!

A follow up to my post from yesterday. ⠀
⠀
The chemicals we track into our homes via our shoes accumulate in our house dust, but shoes are not the only source of these chemicals. They mostly come from our furnishings and household items.
⠀
A meta-analysis led by researchers at Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University (PMID: 27623734) sought to identify the toxic chemicals in house dust. ⠀
⠀
They found that there were 4 categories of toxic chemicals consistently showing up: phthalates, phenols, flame retardants, and PFAS chemicals. ⠀
⠀
Phthalates were found in 100% of the samples. ⠀
⠀
We don't track in phthalates on the soles of our shoes; they migrate out of plastic materials in the home (electronics, wires, vinyl blinds, etc) and from fragranced products (candles, air freshers, cleaning products, personal care products, etc). ⠀
⠀
Talking about house dust with your clients or patients might only seem relevant if they have respiratory issues, but really, it's relevant to everyone! ⠀
⠀
Phthalates, phenols, flame retardants, and PFAS chemicals are all hormone disrupting. ⠀
⠀
Studies looking at dust often find higher levels of these chemicals in children - the younger the child, the higher the levels. ⠀
⠀
Who wants to make a guess as to why that is? ⠀
Lemme know in the comments what you think 🤔 ⠀
.
.
ANSWER: children have higher levels of exposures that adults (even their parents in the same household) due to a combination of things:
.
1. Children have breathe more air, and have more skin, pound for pound than adults, so their exposure to these things is already amplified.
2. Children exhibit increased hand to mouth behavior (ie, everything goes in their mouths) leading to greater ingestion of toxins in dust.
3. Children don’t yet have their full detoxification capacity, making it harder for their bodies to eliminate these toxins.
4. They are also exposed to items in the home that adults engage w less: chemically treated PJs, chemicals in their bedding, lots of plastic toys, etc.
