1/2 #Dermdecode: blackheads - a highly requested topic!. •In normal skin, hair follicles are associated with sebaceous glands which produce sebum to keep the skin/hair lubricated. In basic terms, comedones form when these hair follicles become plugged with sebum and shed keratin (dead skin cells).
.
•There are two types of comedones: “open” in which the follicle is dilated (blackheads) and “closed” in which the follicle is not dilated (whiteheads). The black material is NOT dirt. When the hair follicle is dilated, contents such as lipids and melanin are exposed to air causing their oxidization and resulting in the black colour. Thus the idea that blackheads is due to poor hygiene is false!
.
•Blackheads form with increased sebum production, hormonal changes (increased androgen activity, menstrual cycle changes) or the use of overly greasy moisturizers (i.e. plugging pores). The presence of blackheads with papules/pustules (superficial, red/white bumps), nodules (larger and deeper bumps) and cysts (larger, fluctuant bumps) indicate acne!
.
•So the question many of you have been asking - how does one treat blackheads? There is no fix-it-all permanent solution and treatment usually is ongoing! Some options include:
.
🧼 Pore strips can provide quick relief. These work by providing an adhesive which rips oxidized materials, hairs and other fine particles on your skin. It is a temporary treatment, often having to be used a few times per week.
.
🧴Comedolytic” skincare products can break down comedones and can help to prevent their formation. Ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, retinoids and glycolic acid provide chemical exfoliation and help with skin turnover and in turn, reduce blackhead formation. These ingredients can be found in over-the-counter products or in prescription creams.
.
💉Extractions with a comedones extractor or electrodessication (heating with a metal probe) can be used to remove individual blackheads. Extractions can lead to scarring and as such, should not be done at home. Electrodessication requires medical equipment and hence should be completed by a dermatologist.

There’s a reason everyone raves about @herbivorebotanicals products.. because they really work! ✨ Phoenix facial oil is one of our favorites. It contains Rose Hip Oil - naturally rich in Vitamin A, which works to renew skin and reduce hyperpigmentation along with CoQ10 (sounds crazy, but it’s a natural collagen builder 🙌), and Sea Buckthorn Oil - a naturally rich source of Vitamin C. Use daily for smooth and silky skin. Have you tried it?

    08/17/19. Day 90.
I’m pretty happy with my progress!! Of course I have a few actives, but for the past week I’ve been at the beach and eating like garbage, and haven’t broken out from it too badly. This is definitely progress in my eyes, and I’m super excited for my skin to keep clearing up!
Keep your head up!!

THE MANHATTAN LASER PEEL 👩‍⚕️ is a revolutionary combination laser treatment developed by Dr. Jody Levine, the director of dermatology at Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC. She has taken a new approach to achieving younger, healthier and smoother skin.
Surface skin imperfections can be embarrassing and cause feelings of self-consciousness. Old acne scars may carry painful childhood memories. Cellulite, inconveniently placed facial or body hair, stretch marks, and old, unwanted tattoos may dictate the clothes you choose to wear or how comfortable you feel in your own skin. THE MANHATTAN LASER PEEL is a one-hour treatment incorporating Microlaser peel, fractionated laser resurfacing, as well as PRP. Excellent results can be obtained in just one session, however the number of treatments may vary from patient to patient.

Dr. Malcom Levine will be happy to meet with you to discuss this treatment. Please call us or make an appointment online for a personal consultation in our New York City office.

Skincare routines are personalized; they revolve around your skin type and concerns. However, proper layering of products can increase the effectiveness of your regimen. You can find a lot of information on the internet about how to layer your products, but in reality, and scientifically speaking, it’s not that straight forward! A reliable rule to follow would be to apply water-soluble products before oil-based products. Big thanks to all the chemists out there that are deciphering the biochemical properties of skin and skincare products! 🙏🏻
