My project “going by bus” was featured by @strudelmedialive this past week. Thanks @anjahitze! #Repost courtesy of @make_repost

We’re featuring the work of our student Amanda Bensel (@abenselphoto), from here series "Bus le janne” (“to go by bus”), which documents the conditions and experience of traveling by bus in rural Nepal. With a government lacking both the funds and capacity to operate a nationwide public transit system, "public" buses in Nepal are operated by private regional organizations that are corrupt, territorial and often threaten violence to other bus companies if they trespass on their turf. Thus they essentially operate as mafias with monopolies over different districts of the country. The resulting services are not focused on customer experience; instead it's a race to the bottom, with drivers over-packing buses in order to make maximize profit, a fleet of crumbling vehicles, and reckless driving.

Amanda is an international development and sustainable policy professional and a photographer and artist. She splits her time between Nepal and California, where she works on a variety of photo and video documentary projects related to social enterprise, women’s empowerment and environmental justice.

It truly breaks my heart to witness events like these. I have been constantly telling those I love that life is truly short and uncertain.
Love you Kobe’ // @thesestreetsmag

People like us / Люди как люди. Колеса дыры, душа пакет тянет, почему эту песню сначала в «Сталкере» играли? А чуть досюда добрался, там музыка начинается, и так петь получается!⠀

Baidoa, Somalia.⁣

In 1992 there was news that one of the most devastating famine crisis of the 20th century was taking place in Somalia. ⁣
I had been eternally moved by images I had seen only a few years prior of a famine crisis that took place in Ethiopia, and I was inspired by a sense that collectively, imagery had helped inspire a world movement-with "We are the World" and other international collective actions to help the people of Ethiopia. ⁣

I was driven to go to Somalia as quickly as I could and when I arrived the village of Baidoa, in provincial Somalia, more than 200 people were dying a day of starvation. I have been asked before how one could stand by and make photographs of such a situation and not help the people in front of me. I believe profoundly this is a valid question, and I can assure all that if I had the means personally to directly help the people in front of me, I would have certainly done so. I did have still a hope that if I put my heart and energy towards to communicating what I was seeing, that possibly when published, along with the images of others, that again, collectively, the world might be inspired to get involved and help people in such dramatic and human need. ⁣

This many years later, what I saw still haunts me, and stays with me, always. I often, always, remember the people I saw that needed help, food, attention, so much. They needed more than anything first, compassion, and help and aid, from any and all that had more than they did. This is something that stays with me and even now, I feel I can continue to convey the humanity of this horrible moment to others. (Read on in the first comment...)⁣
