"Life is a storm, my young friend.
You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next.
What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes.
You must look into that storm and shout as you did in Rome.
Do your worst, for I will do mine!
Then the fates will know you as we know you".
— Alexandre Dumas, 'The Count of Monte Cristo'.

Alexandre Dumas (1802 – 1870), also known as Alexandre Dumas père (French for 'father'), was a French writer.
His father, General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, was born in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) to Alexandre Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie, a French nobleman, and Marie-Cessette Dumas, a black slave.

Prolific in several genres, Dumas began his career by writing plays, which were successfully produced from the first.

His works have been translated into many languages, and he is one of the most widely read French authors.

LECTURE AT HIGH SCHOOL. Yesterday I gave a lecture at a high school in Ostrava. I was asked to talk about Dostoevsky because the students will go to the theater to see the Crime and Punishment. I spoke for two hours and the students were so focused that they refused to take a break. I also spoke about Nietzsche, Masaryk, Solovyov, nihilism, existentialism, Munch, Plato. The students became active when I tried to explain what the sentence "beauty will save the world" means. When I spoke about Plato's idea of beauty, I asked students if they had a similar experience and many of them answered to me immediately: someone saw the beauty at the moment of listening to classical music (Mozart), another in nature and one boy in mathematics. I am looking forward to have a feedback from the students because the teacher will ask them to write their reflections about my lecture:-) #dostoevsky #lecture #university #criticalthinking #education #humanities #philosophy #reflection #beauty #lecturing #highschool #teaching #teachingphilosophy #russianliterature #russianclassic #russianwriter #russianwriters #literature #professor #students #school #philosopher #teach #lovephilosophy #lifephilosophy #livingphilosophy #fyodordostoyevskyedit #fyodordostoevsky

I've been meaning to read this for a while now. I read Notes From Underground years ago and really enjoyed it, so I have high hopes for this.
I finished The Elegance of the Hedgehog yesterday and though the first half wasn't doing it for me, the later half justified the book. I would reccomend it.

Fyodor Dostoevsky is one of the greatest Russian writers of all time. He was a writer, journalist, philosopher and an essayist. He's most famous for deep diving in human psychology, unflinching look at society, and weaving philosophy into his stories. His stories are intense, impactful and an existential look at life. He had a very tough life, everything from poverty to exile and imprisonment, so his works aren't exactly peachy but when have we had a rosy masterpiece? He wrote satires about Russia's condition and where society was heading through a naturalistic, realistic lens and added elements of goth and romanticism to add beauty to the text.
His legacy is immense and well deserved.
Are you guys familiar with his work? His most famous stories are crime and punishment , The idiot , Demons, The brothers Karamazov and notes from underground. .

You are a good person, but you have a terrible flaw: your lack of ambition. You are happy with what you reached at, right? But what you have reached at is not something, good boy. That is why I cannot be your wife. Because I can never be convinced of what I have. I always want more.

"Dostoevski said once:
"There is only one thing I dread:
not to be worthy of my sufferings." These words frequently came to my mind after I became acquainted with those martyrs whose behavior in camp, whose suffering and death, bore witness to the fact that the last inner freedom cannot be lost.
It can be said that they were worthy of the their sufferings; the way they bore their suffering was a genuine inner achievement.
It is this spiritual freedom—which cannot be taken away—that makes life meaningful and purposeful".
— Viktor E. Frankl, 'Man's Search for Meaning'.
.

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821-1881) was a Russian novelist, essayist, journalist and philosopher.
Born in Moscow in 1821, Dostoevsky was introduced to literature at an early age through fairy tales and legends, and through books by Russian and foreign authors.
His writings Explored human psychology in the 19th century's troubled political, social and spiritual atmosphere.
He is by many literary critics recognised as the greatest psychologists in literature.
He inspired great writers like Solzhenitsyn, Sartre, Nietzsche and Chekov.
Dostoevsky distinguished three "enormous world ideas" prevalent in his time:
Roman Catholicism, Protestantism and Russian Orthodoxy.
He claimed that Catholicism had continued the tradition of Imperial Rome and had thus become anti-Christian and proto-socialist, inasmuch as the Church's interest in political and mundane affairs led it to abandon the idea of Christ.
For Dostoevsky, socialism was "the latest incarnation of the Catholic idea" and its "natural ally".
He found Protestantism self-contradictory and claimed that it would ultimately lose power and spirituality.
He deemed Russian Orthodoxy to be the ideal form of Christianity.
Dostoevsky suffered a pulmonary haemorrhage, and died on the 9th of februray, 1881.
According to one reporter, more than 100,000 mourners were present, while others describe attendance between 40,000 and 50,000.

— Alexandre Dumas, 'The Count of Monte Cristo'.
.

At age 14 Thomas-Alexandre was taken by his father to France, where he was educated in a military academy and entered the military for what became an illustrious career.
Prolific in several genres, Dumas began his career by writing plays, which were successfully produced from the first.
He also wrote numerous magazine articles and travel books; his published works totalled 100,000 pages.
His works have been translated into many languages, and he is one of the most widely read French authors.
Many of his historical novels of high adventure were originally published as serials, including:
'The Count of Monte Cristo', 'The Three Musketeers', 'Twenty Years After', and 'The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later'. His novels have been adapted since the early twentieth century into nearly 200 films.
The English playwright Watts Phillips, who knew Dumas in his later life, described him as "the most generous, large-hearted being in the world.
He also was the most delightfully amusing and egotistical creature on the face of the earth.
His tongue was like a windmill – once set in motion, you never knew when he would stop, especially if the theme was himself." .

The thing is to understand myself:
the thing is to find a truth which is true for me, to find the idea for which I can live and die.
That is what I now recognize as the most important thing. —Søren Kierkegaard.
.

Repost due to wrong image*
.

Søren Aabye Kierkegaard (1813 – 1855) was a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic and religious author who is widely considered to be the first existentialist philosopher.
He wrote critical texts on organized religion, Christendom, morality, ethics, psychology, and the philosophy of religion,
displaying a fondness for metaphor, irony and parables.
Much of his philosophical work deals with the issues of how one lives as a "single individual", giving priority to concrete human reality over abstract thinking and highlighting the importance of personal choice and commitment.
He was against literary critics who defined idealist intellectuals and philosophers of his time, and thought that Swedenborg, Hegel,  Fichte, Schelling, Schlegel and Hans Christian Andersen were all "understood" far too quickly by "scholars".
Kierkegaard's early work was written under the various pseudonyms that he used to present distinctive viewpoints and to interact with each other in complex dialogue.
He explored particularly complex problems from different viewpoints, each under a different pseudonym.
Some of Kierkegaard's key ideas include the concept of "subjective and objective truths", the knight of faith, the recollection and repetition dichotomy, angst, the infinite qualitative distinction, faith as a passion, and the three stages on life's way.
Kierkegaard wrote in Danish and the reception of his work was initially limited to Scandinavia, but by the turn of the 20th century his writings were translated into French, German, and other major European languages.
By the mid-20th century, his thought exerted a substantial influence on philosophy, theology, and Western culture.

No writer is able to portray the human psyche in the way Dostoevsky managed.
He takes us straight into the minds of those we'd call insane, evil, deluded or freaks; only to make us realize, we're not that different within.

"What about the main thing in life, all its riddles? If you want, I'll spell it out for you right now. Do not pursue what is illusionary -property and position: all that is gained at the expense of your nerves decade after decade, and is confiscated in one fell night. Live with a steady superiority over life -don't be afraid of misfortune, and do not yearn for happiness; it is, after all, all the same: the bitter doesn't last forever, and the sweet never fills the cup to overflowing. It is enough if you don't freeze in the cold and if thirst and hunger don't claw at your insides. If your back isn't broken, if your feet can walk, if both arms can bend, if both eyes can see, if both ears hear, then whom should you envy? And why? Our envy of others devours us most of all. Rub your eyes and purify your heart -and prize above all else in the world those who love you and who wish you well. Do not hurt them or scold them, and never part from any of them in anger; after all, you simply do not know: it may be your last act before your arrest, and that will be how you are imprinted on their memory". — Solzhenitsyn.
.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008) was a Russian novelist, philosopher, historian, short story writer and political prisoner.
He was an outspoken critic of the Soviet Union and Communism and helped to raise global awareness of its Gulag labor camp system.
Solzhenitsyn was put in the GULags after serving for the red army in world war 2.
There, he spent many years under harsh conditions.
During his imprisonment he wrote in secret and managed to smuggle out some of his works.
The novel, Gulag Archipelago was THE work that highlighted what was actually happening in the Soviet-Union.
In 1970 he recieved the Nobel Prize in litterature for "The etichal force with which he had pursuaded the indespensable traditions of russian literature".
He was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1974, but returned to Russia in 1994 after the Union's collapse.
Solzhenitsyn died from heart failure at the age of 89.

"Freedom of Speech" means two things.
1. The right/responsibility to express what you think/mean.
2. The right/responsibility to listen to what other people think/mean.
.

Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950), better known by his pen-name, George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic.
Even though modern readers are more often introduced to Orwell as a novelist, particularly through his enormously successful titles "Animal Farm" and "Nineteen Eighty-Four", he was actually best known for his journalism.
Through essays, reviews, columns in newspapers and magazines, and his books of reportage, such as: "Down and Out in Paris and London" (describing a period of poverty in these cities), "The Road to Wigan Pier" (describing the living conditions of the poor in northern England), and "Homage to Catalonia". His works focus on critic of social injustice, totalitarianism and authoritarianism, including his most famous novel, 1984, which describes a totalitarian world, consisting of surveillance, propoganda and torture.
While writing this novel, Orwell invented several words which still are used today:
Big Brother, Thought Crime, Thought Police, Double Speak, Double Think, Newspeak etc.
A famous phrase that origins from 1984 is:
"Big Brother is watching you", referring to surveillance of individuals by a state.
The adjective "Orwelllian" is also commonly used in the English language to describe totalitarian and authoritarian social practices.
Orwell's work remains influential in popular culture and in political cultur today, and in 2008, The Times ranked George Orwell second among "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".
Orwell died at age 46.

"You are what you do, not what you say you'll do". — Carl Gustav Jung.
.

Henrik Johan Ibsen (1828 – 1906) was a Norwegian playwright and theatre director.
As one of the founders of modernism in theatre, Ibsen is often referred to as "the father of realism" and one of the most influential playwrights of his time.
He is the most frequently performed dramatist in the world after Shakespeare, and A Doll's House was the world's most performed play in 2006.
At the time when Ibsen was writing, literature was emerging as a formidable force in 19th century society.
It was still a relatively new form of popular discussion and entertainment.
With the vast increase in literacy towards the end of the century, the possibilities of literature being used for subversion struck horror into the heart of the Establishment.
Ibsen’s plays, from A Doll’s House onwards, caused an uproar:
not just in Norway, but throughout Europe, and even across the Atlantic in America.
No other artist, apart from Richard Wagner, had such an effect internationally, inspiring almost blasphemous adoration and hysterical abuse.
The social questions which concerned Ibsen belonged unequivocally to the 19th century.
From a modern perspective, the aspects of his writing that appeal most are the psychological issues which he explored.
The social issues, taken up so prominently in his own day, have become dated, as has the late-Victorian middle-class setting of his plays.
The fact that, whether read and staged, they still possess a compelling power is testament to his enduring quality as a thinker and a dramatist.
Ibsen was decorated Knight in 1873, Commander in 1892, and with the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Olav in 1893.
He received the Grand Cross of the Danish Order of the Dannebrog, and the Grand Cross of the Swedish Order of the Polar Star, and was Knight, First Class of the Order of Vasa.

Not even the clearest memories can recall pain.
So looking back, you can perhaps see the positive aspects of hardship even clearer.
.

Sigmund Freud, born Sigismund Schlomo Freud (1856 – 1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst.
In founding psychoanalysis, Freud developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association and discovered transference, establishing its central role in the analytic process.
Freud's redefinition of sexuality to include its infantile forms led him to formulate the Oedipus complex as the central tenet of psychoanalytical theory.
His analysis of dreams as wish-fulfillments provided him with models for the clinical analysis of symptom formation and the underlying mechanisms of repression.
On this basis Freud elaborated his theory of the unconscious and went on to develop a model of psychic structure comprising id, ego and super-ego.
Freud postulated the existence of libido, a sexualised energy with which mental processes and structures are invested and which generates erotic attachments, and a death drive, the source of compulsive repetition, hate, aggression and neurotic guilt.
In his later works, Freud developed a wide-ranging interpretation and critique of religion and culture.
Though in overall decline as a diagnostic and clinical practice, psychoanalysis remains influential within psychology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy, and across the humanities.
It thus continues to generate extensive and highly contested debate with regard to its therapeutic efficacy, its scientific status, and whether it advances or is detrimental to the feminist cause.
Nonetheless, Freud's work has suffused contemporary Western thought and popular culture.
Freud lived and worked in Vienna, having set up his clinical practice there in 1886.
In 1938 however, Freud left Austria to escape the Nazis, and died in exile in the United Kingdom in 1939.
