Great weekend in Austin for the ACAPS Winter Retreat! The focus this year was Global Health, and what an inspiration it was to be on a panel with other amazing women in the field! Brilliant piece in The Strategist by The Australian Strategic Policy Institute on the role of #OurAdf in responding to natural disasters.

Suggestion of “a specifically created disaster-ready reserve force” certainly resonates with many involved in this field but we shouldn’t lose focus of equally important phases of disaster management that also necessitates government intervention: preparation and prevention.

As the article mentions, certain fractions within the ADF feel that the military should be reserved for high end warfare but it is clear that the scale and ferocity of natural events are becoming increasingly beyond the capacity of state and territory governments to handle and becoming an issue of national security.
It’ll be interesting to hear the different thoughts between those who served and the civilian population on this idea.
Thoughts?

February 2nd, 2020 || On January 2nd, 2020, I wrote that this year would be about ‘Dreams’ — “about writing them, about creating them, about manifesting them...” I wrote about making sense of them, writing lists of things to reach them, and then about working towards them. As I reflected on January this month — this year can still be about ‘Dreams’. It is and still will be about writing my dreams and goals, and achieving them but I’ve shot for the stars and missed many times too, and so although this year can be about Dreams — let it also be about resilience and perseverance. Starry Night couldn’t be beautiful without the twists and turns of the stroke of a brush, and Impressionistic painting took many layers of paint to accumulate. There is beauty to be next to the stars in mindfulness and reflection. Let it be known that this year will be about dreams, and the journey it took to be amongst the stars. 🌟

⚠️ In Sudan, humanitarian needs in the country's refugee camps remain high. In North Darfur, more than 200,000 people living in ZamZam Camp rely on services provided by Relief International — one of the last international aid organizations working inside the camp — to survive. It is critical to continue supporting people in this fragile pocket of the country, many of whom have been displaced from their homes for more than a decade. .

And when your finished you realise it's just the beginning... I am very happy and grateful to had the opportunity to study at two of the best universities in psychology and global health in London. I know it's a dream for many. Remember, life is not perfect as Instagram makes it look like and living in London is definitely not glamorous. Indeed, it was a tough time for me to adapt to a fast-paced global city like London and study at the same time. Looking back it’s the events in our lives – sometimes good and sometimes bad – that help us grow personally and professionally. The challenge for us is how we manage ourselves through these difficult periods. Instead of sticking our head in the sand it’s so much better to face these challenges head on and determine how we can use them to our advantage. I believe our challenges do shape us, and can help us make something beautiful and inspiring 💫😊 Meeting people from all over the world I can call my friends now was the best part about London💞.

Many people are worrying about the coronavirus. But how deadly is it actually? Data suggest that so far, only 3% of reported cases have led to death. The mortality rate is much lower than it had been for SARS. Yet, it’s significantly higher than for a standard flu. #coronavírus #corona #facts #fact #data #datavisualization #factsdaily #visualization #virus #statistics #globalhealth

GLOBAL HEALTH INTERNSHIP:
Week ONE was amazing! It’s easy to say I quickly fell in love with the kids at Eternal Anchor in Zapata, B.C. , Mexico!
I’m already learning so much from everyone here: the directors, teachers, physical therapists, families, etc! I’m so grateful for this opportunity to learn and educate myself in such a welcoming environment! I’m excited to see what the next 5 weeks bring! •

FUN FACT: The Fish Taco was created in Baja California, Mexico! 🇲🇽

Tobacco kills eight million people every year and is a primary driver of today’s dramatic rise in chronic non-communicable diseases.

The Union helps countries to adopt and implement tobacco control policies which have been recommended by the @FCTCsecretariat. Since 2007 we have worked in over 50 lower- and middle-income countries with a high prevalence of tobacco use, impacting two-thirds of the world’s smokers.

Perks of doing an exchange abroad? Amazing weekend trips 😍 As part of the Global Health master program, you can choose to do an elective abroad at one of our partner universities or follow the interesting electives offered in Maastricht! A few of the students currently studying in Thailand went to Kanchanaburi to chase some waterfalls. •

Reading @melindafrenchgates#momentoflift book this morning and found this quote a nice reminder that while creating innovative products and technology, it is equally as important to be able to implement it in a way that is specific to user, setting, resources, etc. to achieve successful outcomes.
Focus on solving problems and building for #userpersonas is a critical component in #productdevelopment that is often overlooked.

A water pump 💦 is where field epidemiology started with John Snow’s famous 1854 cholera outbreak investigation in London. 👣🔍 ⁣

Here we have field epi at its essence: a fellow of the Philippines Field Epidemiology Training Program collects a water sample from an unchlorinated hand pump where most of the residents of the surrounding village obtained their drinking water. Contamination of groundwater due to surface runoff was found to be the cause of a local cholera outbreak.⁣

An #outbreak of #coronavirus infections in the #Wuhan province of #China and December 2019 is threatening to emerge as the next #pandemic. At current count, over 4556 cases and 106 deaths reported in China and approximately 100 cases in 15 other countries. According to Lancaster University researchers this will grow to 250,000 cases and the next 12 days. The alarming speed of transmission is in part because the #virus spreads through the air and by touch. Using the power of 3d #medical animation, this video covers what is a pandemic, how this coronavirus is spreading, how coronavirus attacks the body, and what are recommended precautions to take for protecting against epidemics.
Mechanism of disease of coronavirus
The 2019 novel coronavirus is a newly discovered strain from the coronavirus family that causes respiratory disease. Humans have long been infected by coronavirus as it is one of those responsible for the common cold. It is a contagious #viralinfection spread through inhalation or ingestion of viral droplets. As a result, coughing and sneezing and touching infected surfaces are primary sources of infection.
The structure of coronavirus has multiple parts. Inside the virus lies the #genetic encoding that allows the virus to hijack human cells and turn them into virus factories. A protein encapsulates the genetic material known as the viral envelope. On the surface of the viral are S and HE proteins. The structure of 2019 novel coronavirus is a #mutation.
The large S glycoproteins are used by the virus to gain entry to human cells. They attach to receptors on the cell membrane. This binding convinces the cell that the viren is not a threat allowing the virus entry. The exact mechanism for this is not known. Possibly the virus binds with the human cells’ membrane releasing its contents into the cytoplasm. Alternatively, as shown here the human cell ingests the virus in a process known as endocytosis. Meanwhile, the stress of viral production on the endoplasmic reticulum eventually leads to apoptosis or cell death. © Scientific Animations™ #nCoV2019 #sars #SARSCoV #virology #microbiology #epidemic #globalhealth #healthca

This picture was taken in the doorway at a school in one of the villages we served. This doorway
was the entrance into our make-shift pharmacy where we operated out of suitcases full of
medication. The photo shows a glimpse of medications waiting to be picked up by patients later
on. In the background, you can see black tires grown up with weeds contrasted with brightly
painted tires which serve as an outline of the school yard. Though dark in the photo, you can
see a colorful table cloth provided to us by one of the village women to cover the old wooden
table. My friend Courtney, a PY4 on one of her APPE rotations, was crouched down to be face-
to-face with a boy who she was trying to encourage to take his albendazole (worm medicine). I
never knew quite what she was saying to the kids as she dispensed their medicine, but she
always gained their trust and made their parents laugh when she chanted “mastica, mastica,
mastica” (chew, chew, chew) as she chomped her teeth down to demonstrate what they should
do. Courtney is someone who I have always admired for her selflessness, humility, and heart for
serving others. When you add in the opportunity for her to speak Spanish, all of these
wonderful qualities are amplified by 200%. I took this picture because I felt her posture, her
facial expression, and the overall setting captured her spirit and the spirit of the entire brigade.
Reflecting on this photo and the entire brigade has put into prospective my true life purpose: to
love and serve others in all the ways that I can. Through serving the Ecuadorians, I learned that
material riches do not equate to happiness. Our patients, such as this little boy and his family,
have next to nothing yet they are the happiest, warmest, and most grateful people I have ever
met. In my career, I plan to work with underserved populations. I have displayed this photo and
others on a bulletin board in my room to remind me of why I’ve come to school to be a
pharmacist. The pictures will also remind me that money, status, education, health, race, and
ethnicity do not determine our ability to act ethically, humble ourselves, and love others. 📷: Jordan Harra @uk_collegeofpharmacy

The total of confirmed cases in Italy has risen more than 100, after 44 new cases were confirmed on Sunday, according to authorities.

In Italy, being the worst-affected country in Europe, the virus has killed two people - a man and a woman in their 70s.

Alongside with a growing cluster of cases that have no direct links to the origin of the outbreak abroad, this resulted in a lockdown of a dozen towns in Northern Italy on Saturday.

Click the link in my bio to learn more about how to help me prepare for this trip of a lifetime! 🇰🇪🩺👩🏽‍⚕️

Global Health + Social Media. In 2 days, I’ll be at UCF School of Medicine tackling this topic with our future doctors. As I prep my taking points, I can’t help but reflect on how social media has changed my life and how I practice medicine. Because of social media, I went from standing at the Taj Mahal and feeling so small, to taking care of hundreds of kids in Manipur, India and feeling so incredibly needed. Social media has transformed my life, broadened my experiences, allowed me to exchange ideas with people all around the world. It also has kept me updated on health trends in my community and has completely changed the patient experience. It’s been shown that 90% of people between 18-24 yo trust medical information shared by others on social media and most in that age group rely on info on social media and quick urgent care visits over regular preventative visits. The topic is way too large for me to wrap my mind around and tackle in one day, but hoping to spark ideas and start conversations around how we can use this beast of social media to change healthcare globally.

As many of you know that last year I quit my OBGYN job in Michigan with the intention to become a medical volunteer.
I had no idea how I was going to do it long term.
I had blindly set out to follow my dreams because I strongly believe in start before you are ready.

Life has happened since that time

I have an active, unrestricted Michigan medical license that allows me to practice as an obstetrician and gynecologist in Michigan, if I choose to.
Hopefully soon, I will start seeing OBGYN patients at the East Plano Medical Clinic (volunteer medical clinic) once I get my Texas license.
This clinic is for the non-affording and no medical insurance patients.

Waiting for the right volunteer opportunity is over on my end.

There are women present globally who don’t have ready access or have cultural limitations to women’s health education.
After much speculation and assessment of the need, I am starting LIVE Q&As here on IG.
These will be strictly women’s health related questions, non-discriminatory and non-judgmental.

There are limitations.
I can’t diagnose you because online I can’t do a physical exam, imaging and lab studies.

But
• I can listen to you
• I can address your issue and send you in the right direction
• I can give you custom guidance regarding your specific complaint
• I can educate you on what is normal and what isn’t normal
• I can tell you what a typical obstetrician and gynecologist will do if you were in the US

I am very new to this so bear with me as I learn how to do it.

I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions 💗

🧫 IT'S #antibioticresistance AWARENESS WEEK! I've got some fast facts for ya. .

Let's acknowledge here that antibiotics save lives BIG TIME. Ever since Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928, mortality rates have exponentially decreased all over the world. But the @cdcgov estimates that at least 30% of all the antibiotics prescribed to U.S. outpatients are unnecessary. Every time someone take antibiotics when they don't really need them, or doesn't finish their prescribed course of medication, it contributes to a problem called antibiotic resistance.💊
.

This means the bacteria that are left when you haven't finished your course of antibiotics have been exposed to that antibiotic...and have survived it. Those bacteria have essentially 'learned' how to get around or defeat the antibiotic's kill mechanism...meaning those antibiotics are no longer as effective against those bacteria, or in some cases--are no longer effective at all.🦠
.

Many experts, including those at the CDC and WHO, see antibiotic-resistant diseases as a major threat to our future. In some parts of the world we are seeing a really frightening rise in antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis, gonorrhea, pneumonia, E. coli, and others. One place these 'super bugs' can do some of the most damage is in hospitals, where those in care already have weakened immune systems. When my partner was in the hospital for a period of many months earlier this year being treated for his cancer, one thing we were very worried about was C. difficile, an often deadly gut infection in those who are immunocompromised and who are already on antibiotics for other issues. 🚑
.

That's why I'm going to be posting a lot about microbes and antibiotics this week! It's something I find truly fascinating, and someday I'd like to be part of the scientific community that studies it. If you care about this issue, let me know why down in the comments below, and show your support by using the hashtags #USAAW19 and #BeAntibioticsAware. And maybe consider picking up one of these awesome shirts from @mightymicrobe. ALL proceeds go to patients struggling with antibiotic-resistant infections at UCLA Children's Hospital!!!

That face when you've made the deadline and finally submitted the proposal you've been working on. #academiclife .
.
Being an academic clinician is not something I particularly aspired or planned to do throughout most of my career. However wanting to do global health led me here and I am grateful to work surrounded by amazing colleagues in an incredible institution. Academia is not for everyone but it is a lot broader and diverse that we, or certainly I used to think. From lab, to clinical to the public health and health systems research I do there's room for many more, and more #diversity and it's not only for ivory towers. .
.
.
But to be real it's not always easy and this last month I've really felt the pinch of doing the academic, while being a #surgeon and a #mother and a #daughter. Hence deciding to practice what I preach and my recent break from IG to focus on my priorities, including #selfcare for myself. It's not a balance just constant prioritising but it can be done with a LOT of help from great colleagues, family and friends. .

VISITING SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT!
This is Varsha Muddasani, a medical student from India currently in a rotation in Pulmonology and Critical Care. When asked about what she looks forward to the most, Varsha stated, “It’s been under two weeks since I got here and I am amazed by the beautiful mountains around and the professional, friendly and helpful people here in the university. Over the course of this month I wish to expand my knowledge of the subject through various interesting cases and deepen my understanding of the medical system in the United States. Work on my problem solving skills, patient interaction and multiple aspects of medicine outside the core curriculum. I’m confident I will achieve my goals based on the how great my experience has been here so far!” Welcome Varsha! We are so happy to have you.

Picture of me this week after completing my very first #postpartum home visit!😍
.
All smiles because as a future Ob/Gyn, I’m a firm believer that women’s health is the foundation for family and community health, and @FIMRC gets that.
.
#FIMRC is the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children - so a lot of the sustainable community work we do is with kids and mamas! 👩‍👧‍👦
.
Here are some Maternal Health/ Women’s Health related things I’ve done in my first 2 weeks of my comparative health immersion program in Perú:
.
1. Taught moms about stages of #pregnancy and common symptoms during pregnancy🤰
2. Observed #gynecological surgeries 👩‍⚕️
3. Taught teen moms about safe sex and contraceptive methods 👩‍❤️‍👨
4. Post-partum home visit including history, physical, health education, and newborn check up!🤱
5. And on Monday I’ll be rounding in the maternity ward and seeing some babies being born 🤩
.
If you’re interested in global health and women’s health @FIMRC’s Huancayo, Perú project is a great place to develop your interests!
