2017 // not my heaviest ➡️ 2020 // the lightest I've been in my adult life. I seen someone I knew for the first time in maybe 2 years in the weekend and the first thing they said was 'holy shit you look phenomenal' in turn got me thinking. This said person walked away from our friendship many years ago when was big and now I'm not physically the person I was back then, it makes me wonder how they come to think that I'm prepared to let them back into my life after losing a few kilos. Naaaah, if you cant handle me as a potato, you're not having me as a French Fry! .

Cable Pulley Deltoid Exercise Variants:

Rounded shoulders are so hard to achieve sometimes, especially since many of the pushing movements involve your front delts, which is often disproportionate to the rest of the shoulder in many lifters.

I always make it a priority to do one isolation movement for all three heads of the deltoid. Cable pulleys provide the most activation and consistent resistance when compared to dumbbells as they are not reliant on gravity as the provider of resistance. Resistance can be used as a replacement for cables as they simulate the same type of resistance.

Shoulder workout:

Front delt raise: 3x8 @30lbs (superset front and lateral raises)
Side lateral raise: 3x8 @30lbs
Rear delt pull: 3x8 @30lbs

Some Ways to Care for Yourself [While Caring for Others]

We have a saying in medicine that the most important person in the room is the patient. This orients the team to the patient’s wellbeing and helps us all focus on the task at hand. It’s important in the moment, but it can be difficult to release this mindset at home. And sometimes I feel like we [the caretakers] lose ourselves in the service of others. Self care and self love are really hot topics right now, so I thought I’d share a few ways that I have found to take care of myself in residency.

Set the alarm a few minutes early - I try to build a few extra minutes into my day at least once during the work week. Waking up early [aka 4:30] is not pleasant, but it does wonders for me to have a few extra minutes to sip a cup of coffee, get some quiet reading in, or actually do my hair. [Looking good = feeling good, right?] .
.
Find balance - Physical activity is SUPER important to me. My psyche gets really out of whack when I don’t work out, so I set aside time during the week to make sure I get to a fitness class. If I can’t, I’ll do a 30 minute home workout. If I can’t even do that [it happens], you’ll find me taking some extra sets of stairs in the hospital. Embrace what’s important to you outside of medicine and take a few minutes per day to focus on that.

Ask for help - I had to come to terms with letting go of control, but honestly it’s been very healthy. Let yourself admit that you cannot do everything and gather strength from others. Show your appreciation in the moment, and then give back when/where you can. .

Let it go - Acknowledge that the day will not go as planned. You will not write a 15 page manuscript at the end of your work day or read the entire chapter you’ve been putting off. But, maybe you write the introduction or read for 15 minutes before bed. Be proud of all you accomplished during the day, acknowledge that you gave what you could, and pat yourself on the back for doing a little extra.

Contemplated posting these because I like to keep them to myself but I also like to show different aspects of my life. This was from a few weeks pre Christmas, to post beginning of February. I see myself daily and it’s not until I look at old photos, until I noticed how much my body can change. I definitely notice more de- bloat and I do feel I can push my body a little more when it comes to workouts. I love this journey and look forward to seeing where I will continue to go. I will not give up and this is only just the start. 💪🏻 (Most recent: image 3 first photo ).

When it comes to fat loss we need to not be obsessed with the scales and our weight. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We should channel that energy into focusing on our training, food and enjoying the process (or trying to). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why?

Because your weight is going to fluctuate over the course of your fat loss phase. It is easy to get caught up in obsessing over the number on the scale however you will just be causing undue stress and anxiety to yourself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Be patient. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Weight is going to fluctuate from day to day due to a myriad of factors. Bloating, hormones, hydration and bowel movements just to name a few are usual culprits to daily weight fluctuation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All the more reason we should be looking at the trend over time as opposed to checking our weight EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
Once a week will suffice, you can track it weekly and watch the trend. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Whilst the scale does play a role in tracking progress, it shouldn’t be your primary method. InBody scans, progress shots, measurements, or simply feeling better, more positive and more energetic are great indicators too!

This folded forward core work is one of my favorite exercises! I usually use a yoga block as a prop, but you can use any sort of prop as long as it is stable. I have used a shoe, a weight, or a glove - as you can see here! 🥊You can also do it without a prop; the prop just makes this more challenging and really makes you engage your core to lift your legs.

This is also a great core exercise for people who have neck pain - my mom has a very stiff, sensitive neck and many traditional core exercises done from a seated or supine position aggravate her neck. She loves this core exercise as well because it doesn’t strain her neck, so when I teach barre classes to my family, I often choose this move.

I usually do a set of 16 of each move, but feel free to do more or less - just try to do an even amount on both legs and challenge yourself with a slight hold at the end if possible!

The key to this exercise is to lean forward and really press your weight into your hands and fingers to engage your core. You can do this very easily if your weight is back towards your seat, but you’d be using your leg muscles and hip flexors instead of your core to lift your legs. So really round forward and press as hard as you can into the floor, focusing on using your abdominal muscles to lift the legs.

IN THE LEFT (feb 2019): starting to cut out food groups that my body doesn’t like (dairy hello), training abs once week, intuitively eating, flexing desperately and trying to see gains (😔), and doing lots of deadlifts and squats

ON THE RIGHT (today): Tracking the nutrients that affect my body the most, eating 80/20 clean diet, training abs 4-5x a week, not training legs due to injury, and flexing way too often in the mirror

By committing to things that genuinely bring us happiness and value, we start to filter out toxic people in our lives.

RECIPE! Chocolate Dulce de Leche Cookie Sandwiches 🍫Vegan | Paelo | Gluten-Free | Peanut Free⠀

There’s no need to go south of the equator to get your hands on some cookie sandwiches with dulce de leche filling in between when you can make your own chocolatey version at home that’s both paleo and vegan!⠀

INGREDIENTS ✨⠀
Cookie Dough:⠀
6 Tbsp Cashew Butter⠀
¼ Cup + 2 Tbsp Coconut Sugar⠀
¼ Cup coconut Flour⠀
1 Tbsp Arrowroot⠀
¾ Cup Cassava Flour⠀
2 tsp Tiger Nut Flour⠀
¼ Cup Carob powder⠀
½ Mashed Banana⠀
¼ Cup +2 Tbsp Coconut Milk⠀

Dulce de Leche Filling:⠀
15 Pitted Medjool Dates ⠀
½ Cup + 1 Tsp Maple Syrup⠀
2 Tbsp Coconut Butter⠀
½ tsp Vanilla Extract⠀
½ Tbsp Lemon Juice⠀
1 Tbsp Cup Warm Water⠀
1 tsp Unsulphured Blackstrap Molasses (optional)⠀
1 Tbsp Carob Powder⠀

INSTRUCTIONS ✨⠀
Chocolate Cookie Dough:⠀
1️⃣ In a stand mixer with the paddle attachment on, mix together coconut sugar, coconut flour, cassava flour, tigernut flour, carob powder and arrowroot. You may also do this by hand. ⠀
2️⃣ Add the mashed banana, coconut butter and coconut milk. Mix only until mixture comes together. You may also do this by hand.⠀
3️⃣ Roll into a thin log approximately 1” thick (you can make it bigger if you would like). ⠀
4️⃣ Cover it in plastic wrap and place in freezer for 20-30 minutes.⠀
5️⃣ Take out of the freezer and with a knife, cut the log of cookie dough into thin, equal ¼” sized discs.⠀
6️⃣ Place cookies on parchment covered sheet tray and bake at 350℉ for 7-10 minutes. Set aside to cool.⠀

Dulce de Leche Filling:⠀
1️⃣ Add all ingredients to a food processor and blend. ⠀
2️⃣ Smear the dulce de leche caramel on half of the cookies and then stack the other half of the cookies on top. Enjoy!! You can also transfer the sandwiches to a sealable container and store at room temperature or in the fridge for up to 2 days.⠀

You can sub maple syrup for 1/4 cup honey⠀
