I realized today as I was working on content for my social media, that I have yet to explain the BASIC FOUNDATIONS of #nutrition. Some of you following me may not even know what protein, fat, and carbohydrate even mean. You have most likely heard the terms, but they might be a foreign language to you. So, this post is dedicated to learning some of the #basics 👍🏻⁣

The word “protein” is derived from the Greek word proteios, which means “primary.” This is fitting, because #protein truly is the most plentiful component in our body (other than water.) The body uses protein to make up hair, skin, muscles, nails, tendons, ligaments, and other tissues in the body. Protein is also necessary for the production of hormones, neurotransmitters, and enzymes. ⁣

The building blocks of protein are called amino acids. Our body can make some of these amino acids, but there are certain amino acids that we HAVE to get from food, which are called essential amino acids. This means we cannot live without protein! Animal proteins (meat, fish, dairy, eggs) are called COMPLETE proteins in that they contain all of the essential amino acids. Plant proteins (grains, legumes, seeds) often have to be combined to make a complete protein. ⁣

How Much Protein Do You Need?⁣
How much protein does a person need? Well, this is highly individualized and depends on age, activity level, and health history. Athletes, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, individuals recovering from injuries, burns, or surgery, and growing children will all have higher protein needs. Protein needs can range anywhere from 0.8g/kg-2.0g/kg of body weight. Note that EXCESS protein that your body does not utilize WILL be stored as #fat. So the idea that you cannot eat too much protein is #false

If you’ve been following my series on #pcos, today I will be discussing conventional vs natural treatments.

If you want to go down the conventional (or allopathic) route to treat your PCOS, then ilikely the GP will prescribe the contraceptive pill, as the conventional approach is to suppress ovulation. This seems a little counter-intuitive as PCOS is failure to ovulate. The pill works to suppress androgens, but this effect only lasts as long as you take it. However, science has proven the pill to be a driver of insulin, one of the main causes of PCOS. Coming off the pill can also cause a surge in androgens, so this may be unhelpful in the long run.

Another common approach is to prescribe Metformin, a drug used to treat diabetes, which actually increases insulin sensitivity. Many of my PCOS clients are on Metformin and I work with them until they’re in a position to come off it (not always! And always under the supervision of a medic. It would be unethical of me to encourage a client to come off their meds). The downsides of metformin are that it can deplete the body of vitamin B12 so you may need a supplement (ask your GP to test) and in some cases, it may cause digestive discomfort.

I have clients on other drugs to correct their PCOS and some are put on the Mirena coil. Spironolactone is a water pill, or diuretic, that can successfully reverse the effects of androgens.

Clients who are trying for a baby will undergo a different type of treatment and the woman may be given Clomid to increase egg production.
Personally, I prefer to address the root cause and correct the underlying imbalance!

PCOS is modifiable by diet and lifestyle but depending on the cause, the treatment differs slightly and we will cover this in more detail. The ideal PCOS diet will be a low carb, no sugar diet (not no carb! We’re not talking keto here.) Other ways to reduce the symptoms of PCOS are to eat within an 8 hour window, and fast for 16 hours (time restricted eating or TRE), increase exercise (exercise helps with insulin sensitivity) and not taking hormonal contraception. Something I always hid about myself was how I spent so many years in a procrastination cycle, putting it off and putting it off and waiting till the so called 'perfect' time that never comes

I see many people hanging off "the need for it to be the right time to make health a priority" when truth is the right time never comes and health is always a priority as it impacts every area of our life and without it we have nothing,

As I've said before and I'll say it again, healing the body dis-ease severe or not is no mystery, and doesn't require taking hours of our precious time each day weighing food, counting pills, worrying if you're getting enough macro and micro nutrients ... But it means seeing past this complexity which isn't real

Was having a conversation about feelings and how for a long time and after going through a lot of difficult emotional situations I had become numb in a sense and pretty cold to feeling any range of emotions. I had to really muster up anything resembling sensitivity, and while this can be useful, it’s often a hinderance in a situation where a more human level of empathy is appropriate. I’ve enjoyed how upping the estrogen levels has brought me back in touch with a fuller spectrum of emotional connection. I laugh more, smile more, and cry a lotttt more, both happy and sad tears. It’s great. 😢😂🥰🖤 .

Research has shown that 5+ years of oral birth control (BC) use can affect endometrial growth (membrane that lines the uterus). This leads to higher cancellation rate and longer stimulation in frozen embryo transfers (women undergoing IVF therapy for pregnancy). The study concludes that long-term BC usage may have an affect on women anticipating future fertility/pregnancy. (Swipe ➡️ Pic 2 for study)

How BC pills works:
1️⃣ Prevents release of the egg from the ovary. It does this by preventing stimulation of FSH and LH (hormones responsible for signaling ovulation to occur).
2️⃣ Cervical mucus typically becomes a thin substance that allows sperm to move more efficiently to the egg. The BC pill causes mucus to remain thick and sticky so that the sperm can’t reach the egg.
3️⃣ The uterine lining remains thinner, making it difficult for a fertilized egg to attach. When not taking BC  it will thicken before ovulation, making it the best time for the fertilized egg to attach.

Birth control essentially keeps your estrogen & progesterone at the same level constantly. Keeping you in the same “phase” of your menstrual cycle at all times (Swipe ➡️ Pic 3 = hormones not on BC, Pic 4 = hormones on BC).

The effects that cause your uterine lining to remain constantly thin while on BC can continue even after coming off of the pill. Due to the disruption of hormones (being quieted for years on birth control) the body may not “regulate” to having a normal cycle very quickly.

I remember when I was a teenager I went on the pill to “regulate” my periods. When I finally came off of the pill, my period was worse than it had ever been before. BC didn’t “regulate” my hormones, just prevented my body from producing its own hormones.

The purpose of my posts are to educate young women on the things that were never explained to me. I’ve since seen women struggle with fertility & lack of periods following discontinuation of BC. Educate yourself, & know there are other alternatives that can prevent pregnancy. If your doctor tells you the only way to “fix” your period is to go on BC don’t be afraid to question them- advocate for yourselves 💃🏽❣️

Stress affects more than your emotional health; it has very real effects on your physical wellness, too. Proper stress management can ward off disease, including hypertension and adrenal fatigue.

Stress-reduction techniques include lifestyle makeovers. This might be as simple as delegating tasks at home so you’re responsible for less. You may also teach yourself that it’s OK to say “no” to extra assignments at work or extracurricular activities. For me, I know I have to work on saying “no” to those things that take time away from my family. (There are so many!)

Did you know that hanging out with your best friends can reduce your stress level hormones? You see, whenever you body/brain/mind is in a stressful state, your adrenal gland is automatically cued to release CORTISOL... a stress hormone associated with fight-or- flight; however, if you aren't in a situation to fight or fly, then WHOA buddy, you're body is in for a ride! Cortisol ques your tissues to release glucose (including breaking down muscle to release any needed glucose), and now, because there is a greater amount of glucose bouncing around in your blood, YOU GUESSED IT... INSULIN levels spike to help your cells absorb the circulating glucose.
So what if this happens in a situation that's "fight-or-flight"? Your body uses the extra glucose for the action needed and resumes to normal activity when signaled "all is well." Easy peasy.
What happens if the stress is continual and constant (Such as how many of us live on a daily basis- YIKES!)? Over time, as your body continues to emit higher levels of cortisol, more glucose is released, and consequently, more insulin is needed to provide uptake of glucose into cells. Eventually, the body's cells cannot properly absorb the glucose (INSULIN RESISTANCE) and it stores the circulating glucose as fat.
There are several ways to reduce stress but one of my favorites is hanging out with people I love!

💦 Head Full o' Hormones 💦
Three hormones, gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), are released from glands within the brain. These travel through the bloodstream to nudge eggs out of the ovary.

🐓 Egg Prepares to Escape 🐓
As they grow, several egg follicles produce estrogen. This causes the uterine lining to thicken with more blood vessels in preparation for the egg’s release from its ovarian prison.

🎉 Hormone Party 🎉
This is the part where things get chemically wacky. Estrogen peaks. LH starts to increase, and so does FSH. This hormonal mingling culminates in the surge that causes ovulation.

🍳 Ovulation Time 🍳
Estrogen levels fall and LH surges, causing the ovary to release the egg into the fallopian tube. The egg lives for 12-24 hours.

🔆 Luteal Lunacy 🔆
The egg makes its way to the uterus via the fallopian tube while the empty egg follicle — known as the corpus luteum — squishes out more and more estrogen + progesterone to get the uterus ready for a possible pregnancy. FSH and LH levels plunge.

😡 Hormonal Hell 😡
Progesterone level peaks. This hormone helps build up the uterine lining. High progesterone might be one of the causes of PMS. Bummer.

✌️Ova and Out✌️
If the egg was not fertilized, the corpus luteum falls apart and stops producing progesterone. A fertilized egg, called a zygote, keeps progesterone high, and this growing ball of cells becomes a blastocyst.

👣 Bloody Mess👣 (and REPEAT!)
Estrogen levels decrease and progesterone production slows, causing the uterine lining to break down and shed — the egg goes with the flow. If you’re not preggo, your period starts all over again.

A body you hate can't heal itself which is why self care is so important. I have struggled with negative self talk as have alot of my clients. Negative self talk does not necessarily revolve around weightloss. Some negative self talk comes from you being mad you have eczema, or mad at yourself for being on your period, or hating yourself because you have anxiety.
Your body will do what you tell it to do, as long as you are giving it what it needs. You can't expect to lose weight long term by doing massive amounts of cardio and weightlifting while cutting calories extremely low.
You need to talk/treat yourself like you talk/treat your kids, or animals. You make sure your kid is fed, gets enough sleep, has play time etc. YOU need all those things too! Having negative behaviors or thoughts causes your body to release your stress hormones, which puts your body into SPIRAL MODE. Next, your sleep is off, so your digestion is off, so your eating is off...You get the point.

Focus on self love instead of self hate. I know you are thinking this is bullshit, but just pay attention to your thoughts and words for a few days. Start thinking about what you can do rather than what you can't. Set a small goal that would create self love for yourself. My self love is my cup of coffee alone without kids listening to audible, or a bath a night alone, a facial, my gym time.

Once you start to pay attention to your thoughts, you will realize how mean you are to your self! Once you notice you can make a change. Double tap if you need some self love!

Wednesday Wisdom 💜
Let’s talk anxiety. Yesterday I had a really tough day of being a mother. My son wouldn’t nap for love nor money. I was trying to get him to nap in his big boy cot and persevered for an hour, only for my husband to call and wake him up! That was it, he would not go back down. Cue the anxiety! I was so worried he wouldn’t sleep during the night (FYI he slept ok but not great) because he was overtired. I was definitely overtired! I ended up sobbing and my husband came home early to help me. Thank god he is self employed! I am so sick of reading mummy blogs that only say how sweetness and light motherhood is- how their baby slept through at 6 weeks old, how they are doing exercise after only 4 hours sleep. BORE OFF! Most of us are just so happy if we have managed to do a load of washing today or if we managed to wash our hair after 3 days of caking it in dry shampoo! Thank god I have so many mummy friends who, in the words of Ali G, KEEP IT REAL and make me realise that this shit it hard! I wouldn’t change it for world and I love my son unconditionally but sometimes, let’s face it, babies can be assholes 😂

I’ve been seeing this all over Instagram for years and I’m always hearing people say just how good it is, but for some reason I just never gave it an actual try until recently...

PEANUT BUTTER CHOCOLATE CHIP STUFFED DATES 🤤

Looks so simple, but OMG they’re SO GOOD (also super quick, easy & inexpensive) 😊
.
To make these, all you gotta do is grab some GOOEY medjool dates, cut them in half (be sure to take the pit out!), spread some peanut butter in the middle, and top them with chocolate chips (I love the @enjoylifefoods dark chocolate chips 🍫).
.
(You could also sub out the peanut butter for another nut butter & the chocolate chips for carob chips or other nuts, seeds, etc. This has been the best combo I’ve tried so far tho 😁)
.
These would be great as a little pre-workout pick-me-up, an afternoon snack, after dinner dessert, or for anyone else wanting to satisfy their sweet tooth 😛

Looks so simple, but OMG they’re SO GOOD (also super quick, easy & inexpensive) 😊

To make these, all you gotta do is grab some GOOEY medjool dates, cut them in half (be sure to take the pit out!), spread some peanut butter in the middle, and top them with chocolate chips (I love the @enjoylifefoods dark chocolate chips 🍫).

(You could also sub out the peanut butter for another nut butter & the chocolate chips for carob chips or other nuts, seeds, etc. This has been the best combo I’ve tried so far tho 😁)

These would be great as a little pre-workout pick-me-up, an afternoon snack, after dinner dessert, or for anyone else wanting to satisfy their sweet tooth 😛
