Here is basically a full walk through of the way I have been cueing the version of plies we do in my class. There are many ways and reasons to do plies for benefit, but for the average participant in my class, my goals are:

1. prioritize hip strength!!! THIS is the focus; without this we cannot attempt to achieve the following benefits from this powerful movement--> active mobility and stability .

2. balance and control of our center over active feet

3. awareness and control over the lower abs .
.
4. inner thigh/hammie strength
.

Done correctly with this checklist, this simple movement can dramatically strengthen the INNER and OUTER lines of the leg-- the lateral stabilizers for any movement we want to do!

Increased some weight here and there today. My legs feel like crap. I don’t know when they are ever going to feel like normal again. I’m doing everything my pt says to do. I do everything my doctor says to do and I have been doing this for 3 years and about 2 months already! WTH! Ugh! I just want things to start feeling like normal in my legs...

First time I’ve been able to deadlift properly for around 8 months.❗️ 3sets @ 40KG for 10 repetitions✅

Knee is still sore but being able to do this (even only 40KG) is big improvement.

Avoid harsh blue light. This has been proven time and time again that this light will throw off your circadian rhythm and your melatonin secretion, which will make it harder to get to sleep.
SLEEP TIP: Limit device use 60-90 minutes before sleep. Try dimming lights around bedtime to let your body know it's night time. This will help with your circadian rhythm and melatonin secretion. Try reading a book before bed instead of using electrical devices.

12km Christmas run is a bust!
I've had knee and other injuries before. Now I listen and train and recover smarter so I can exercise and be well for another day.
My plan of action is to wear knee brace, ice, take anti-inflammatory medication, and eat anti-inflammation as well. Then I'll be calling my sports doctor for ART work @elitechiropractor and I won't run for the next week. I will still exercise - spin classes and strength exercises but I will be mindful of my knee pain

Movement therapy/Joint mobility.


Lying on back, knees bent and arms perpendicular to the body, feet and knees together. Move the knees together to one side and then to the other. Add head turning to the opposite direction of knees. Add the arms, one palm up and one palm down, as head turns rotate shoulders/arms opposite direction. 🔴 Perform 10 reps each side daily. ‪

Sunday Funday. Well, not so fun, but very effective. Keep it simple and give standing hip hikes a try to work on gluteus medius strength in a closed chain position. This is a good way to train your hip abductors in a very functional position, replicating the concentric and eccentric contractions needed every time your foot hits the ground during locomotion. This was one of the exercises that saved me from IT Band pain a few years back. This muscle functions to abduct the hip (pull away from midline) and stabilize the hip and spine, especially when on one leg. 🤺⁠

🔥One of the best exercises to activate and strengthen the glute medius is the “clamshell.” The image above gives a visual of this movement and shows added resistance using a band. This exercise can be regressed by doing it without a band, and progressed using a stiffer band. 🔑⁠

A fun muddy soup run* over in #bembridge today as my not so gentle re-introduction to exercise after a couple of months out. Also the start of training for #bathhalf. (Ugh). That’s me on the right, trying to look athletic and noble.

Lovely job by the organisers at the bembridge youth and community centre - and to top it off I won whiskey in the raffle!

Now I just need to find myself an osteopath because I have all the niggles!

I will be practising in #cityofbath on Monday and Tuesday this week @bath_pilates, and then @islandwellnessclubandspa near #Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight on Wednesday and Friday so if you have niggles of your own then let me help you. Appointment info is on my website in the link at the top of the page and you do NOT need to be a member of The Westbay Club to come and see me there (but you can use the sauna and steam room for the same price as a normal treatment with me - good, huh?) *apparently not the advanced egg and spoon race I thought it might be. But we did get hot soup afterwards

🔨Through daily activities, poor movement patterns and poor workout programming, we tend to develop quad-dominant tendencies.

🤸‍♂️I see this a lot in CrossFit, with a good amount of programming involving the some type of squat or pushing move, (I.E. back, front, overhead, snatch, etc) and then explosive movements such as box jumps and burpees. All of that helps to reinforce movements that occur through our knees🏋️‍♀️.
.
➡️HOWEVA(Stephen A. Smith voice) We can’t forget our backside🍑, here are a few ideas for getting you to move through your hips, and not your knees, taking stress off of them and allowing you to move more efficiently and effectively!

For the absolutists out there. Because there is always one😀 Common sense (which ain’t so common) dictates you always treat the usual suspects with elbow pain. You don’t stop doing assessments or the standard treatment stuff like elbow, neck, thoracic, shoulder, wrist, core, etc. When that shit doesn’t work you go everywhere else. That’s unicorn shit‼️ I just go everywhere else right from the beginning

IT BAND PAIN 😩🔥🤕

IT BAND syndrome is a commonly diagnosed condition when someone notes lateral knee pain when taking a jog or being on their feet for prolonged times 😤

If your dealing with knee pain and suspect it may be the IT BAND... TUNE IN ❗️

Let’s start with some myth busting about tackling the IT band 👉🏻STOP FOAM ROLLING IT ⚠️

It takes such extreme levels of force to actually stretch the IT band you would literally break your leg in the process of trying to loosen it up with a foam roller. (Maybe not literally, but you get the point !) ✅

Instead, choose to foam roll the surrounding tissue but more importantly stabilize the knee and hip. Building glute strength and learning to control the position of the knee is an amazing way to take the pressure off the IT band and knee 💯

Try these exercises out next time instead of rolling your leg to death 💀 -
