Bobby González’s The Last Puerto Rican Indian: A Dangerous Collection if Poetry review is up! 🔥
.
Earlier this summer, I visited the @smithsoniannmai in NYC for the Taíno exhibit where I had the privilege of seeing Bobby González perform his storytelling and poetry reading about the Puerto Rican, Taíno experience.
.
This morning I finished reading his collection of poetry, The Last Puerto Rican Indian: A Collection of Dangerous Poetry (2010). I so wish that in my schooling, I studied some of this poetry alongside reading about what was called at the time, my teachers called the “Age of Discovery”.
.
Later in my high school years, and more significantly in college, I learned that Christopher Columbus was not the revered, moral, explorer that my schooling would have led me to believe as many public school curricula do now. Though, even then in college, I did not think about Latinx identity in this context. Rather, broader terms were used in this discourse: “Native Americans” suffering at the hands of the colonizer versus, as González’s poetry would more specifically say Taíno Indians from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Haiti, The Dominican Republic resisting against the enslavers, against cultural genocide, exploiters of Mother Earth and so on.
.
Particularly as someone who is Puerto Rican, I often felt like the curriculum that I studied was a series of windows that I left out onto, rather than a mirror that reflected my own identity and history (Style 1988). I wonder how different my schooling experience would have been had I also read some of González’s poetry, or had learned about Puerto Rican resistance efforts or even learned about Taíno Indians' language, culture, history, etc.
.
As an educator, I feel it is so important to incorporate what Chimamanda Adiche (2014) calls “a balance of stories” in our course of study. I would highly recommend reading and studying some of this poetry in conjunction with any European Exploration curricula, American Indian literature or Latinx literature.
.

I'm beyond excited to say in less than 12 days my dark comedy Portrait Of A Sociopath will be premiered at The Hudson Guild Theater! Get your tix today before they all sell out! (Link in bio) ·

When a backstabbing friend, a cheating girlfriend, a spineless playwright father, and a venomous mother gather to throw a surprise party for Jacob Hagan, it's because they each secretly need something from the always reliable Jake. The same Jake who was fired as a heart surgeon, has an investigator on his tail, and arrived to his surprise party with his own blood stained secret. With a twist worth gasping over, PORTRAIT OF A SOCIOPATH is a fast paced comedy about the long term relationships between sociopaths and the victims who need them most. ·

A full-length, official selection of New York Theater Festival's Summerfest 2019.  See http://newyorktheaterfestival.com/summerfest-festivals/ for more information ·

Allyship includes holding others accountable to #dothework.
.
Through leadership coaching, business and daily life, I do my best to encourage open dialogue on issues of equity, social justice, and diversity and inclusion.
.
In one recent conversation, with a local business executive, I witnessed what is often a trend among majority cultures: instead of holding others accountable to doing anti-racism work, they ask people of color (POC) to (1) adapt their approach, (2) center whiteness, and (3) above all else, make the majority culture comfortable, even if that further dehumanizes POC.
.
After sharing a personal experience of discrimination, the exec responded “Maybe you can change your approach, so the person doesn’t feel threatened. Perhaps then, they’d be more receptive to diversity.”
.
Typically, I’m very open to coaching. But in this moment, I couldn’t help but think “how about you hold your peers accountable instead?”
.
Over the course of my career, allies have stood by while I’ve...
.
Been told “you speak English really well, given the fact that it’s your second language,” although I was born and raised in the U.S.
.
Had a manager change my name without my permission because it was “easier for her to say”.
.
Been publicly shamed by a leader who stated, without context, that I “kissed every man I came across” when he saw me simply give a customary Latino air-kiss to a long-time friend.
.
Had a colleague and manager both claim reverse discrimination (during my birthday luncheon), saying “Hispanics are stealing college spots from white kids who earned them.”
.
Had a recruiter tell me she’d find “another minority for the job” when I declined an offer.
.
Had a top leader ask me if Victoria Secret made warm enough underwear to get me though the winter season.
.
The list goes on. So yeah, I think that’s sufficient micro-aggression, discrimination and harassment to navigate through “amiably”, and to hope for an ally to roll through once and a while to provide support.
.
Don’t always expect POC to pivot. Hold individuals expressing racist views and bias to higher standards because, dear Ally, I expect more of you too.

Passion Project Piece 2 “We have shed blood for America in every single one of her wars. We are the most decorated minority in each and every single one of those wars. But where are our contributions? Where are they? Where are they listed, mentioned or honored? Can you imagine if they were written back into history? Written back into history textbooks? Can you imagine how America would see us? More importantly, can you imagine how we would see ourselves?” -Latin History for Morons, @johnleguizamo
John Leguizamo is a Colombian born American actor, stand-up comedian, filmmaker, and playwright. He currently has a comedy special on Netflix called Latin History for Morons.

The words he spoke during the end of his special woke my brain and set my soul on fire. Our contributions are hidden from not only the world’s view, but our own. This poignant point is why I’ve chosen LatinX celebrities and innovators as my personal passion project focus. So I may see myself as I should. .

The meat and dairy industries want you to believe that they’re not wasting water or harming the environment. That’s a lie. An estimated 55% of the USA’s freshwater supply goes to raising animals for food. It takes about 12 times as much water to produce dairy milk as it does almond milk. Y'alls! I am behind on some posts. Last Friday I got interviewed by @carnitasbae, host of @lalistapodcast and I definitely went into memory lane for this interview. I talked about some of my personal favorite writers alive and passed on. I also went into stream of consciousness...I could hear myself derrailing but couldn't stop and this, my friends, is called #babybrain aka lack of sleep. Big props to Ruben for being a total pro during the interview, and thanks for the swag thus past Sunday! To all the new and vintage moms out there who are doing that creative writing/directing/acting hustle, big hugs and love to you. .

    Day 23: #30lessonsin30days ⁣
⁣
💫Today something magical awoke in me... ⁣💫
⁣
something that has been dormant for a couple of years. ⁣
⁣
Today, I let myself feel! I mean really feel.⁣
⁣
Feel emotional😱, messy😫, happy😝, sad🥺 all at once... no filtering myself but just being. ⁣
⁣
From the moment I accepted it all as it was, magic started to happen! ⁣
⁣
I went with the flow of my day and ended up at an old and talented friends dancing class, I was not thinking I was moving being and letting my body feel. ⁣
⁣
It was magic and it brought me faith... ⁣
faith in my mission, my family and my life! ⁣
⁣
Getting my flow on... ⁣💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻
