During pregnancy and the postpartum the word “nutrition” can bring up a lot of meanings and a lot of feels. There’s also a ton of conflicting information out there making it hard to navigate what’s “right.” Add that to the fact that most of us have been subjecting to years and years of diet culture messaging and ideas of what size our bodies should be or what they should look like blah blah blah.
All of that combined can make things super tough.

At BIRTHFIT we always suggest asking yourself “why” or what your goal is with paying attention to what you’re eating. And work backwards from there.
Some mamas choose to count macros, some choose to eat intuitively, and some are feeling so sick they’re just happy to keep anything down. There’s nothing wrong with any of these approaches as long as you feel it’s in line with who you are and your values.

Personally, I encourage everyone to educate themselves as much as possible through this process. One of my favorite resources for this is “Real Food for Pregnancy” by Lily Nichols. She does such a great job of laying it all out for it and emphasizes the importance of each micronutrient through pregnancy as well as a great macro balance.

If you’re someone who has been counting macros or eating very strictly for a while prior to pregnancy it can be challenging to let go of the reins here a bit, or to find the best ways to cope when you feel like your body is revolting especially in the first tri. Working with a coach, be that a @birthfit coach or one of the pregnancy coaches at @workingagainstgravity is going to help you find what works best for you and how you envision your pregnancy. Just because you’re working with a coach doesn’t mean to need to count macros or hit numbers or really do anything in particular! You can simply work together to find strategies that work for you to help you get enough of the essentials in!!

    Today... Was filled with getting up way to early, feeling sick on a boat, and a whole lot of being in a car. But also the beginning of my holiday with some family in France, in the photo is my cousin who is on of those great people with me 😊. Traveling can be tough with diet so I have brought some essentials with me (like a bag of oats, almond milk, and orange juice which I have to use for my evening meds, along with some of my favourite kind of apples (pink lady) and some rice cakes amongst some other snacks.) Having some things like this or prepping lunch for one of the days of travel can really take some stress off of the situation when it comes to food. Especially since it's related to my physical and mental issues. No exercise today hopefully some swimming tomorrow 👌.

49 fat (The food was a duck breast and salad, I also stole some left over chops from some family members and had a cooked pear for dessert)

    Coffee shops that have a killer toast bar????? YES PLEASE. 👏🏼 Breakfast yesterday was pretty epic, especially since it consisted of the absolute sweetest gal, @healthywithhart, as well ! Something I love about this Instagram community is being able to meet people with the same passions as myself and get to know other lovers of all things health and wellness. In today’s world, it is so common for an individual to be so afraid to express their passions and what brings them joy due to how critical others can be. But why? Why be so negative towards someone for simply liking something that fills them with happiness? If it’s not negatively affecting you (or the other individual), what’s the big deal? When I started spending more time doing what I love and less time trying not to be judged by others, man did life get better. It’s so much easier said than done, but it’s the best feeling! Speaking of things I love, I got a honey lavender latte and a sourdough toast topped with avocado, hard-boiled eggs, and feta at this bomb local coffee shop - this was absolutely delicious, and I plan on returning very soon, possibly getting a ~sweet~ combination next time. Have the most incredible day, all! I’m going to go back to school shopping soon with a pal, aka see ya soon, thrift stores ! ✨

INGREDIENTS 👇⁠
● 200g chicken breast⁠
● 1 cup eggplant⁠
● 1⁄2 red onion⁠
● 50g red capsicum⁠
● 1 tbsp red curry paste⁠
● 1⁄4 tsp olive oil⁠
● 100ml coconut cream⁠
● Thai green basil leaves⁠
● 50g basmati rice⁠
⁠
CURRY PASTE:⁠
● 1 tsp cumin seeds⁠
● 2 tsp coriander seeds⁠
● 1⁄2 tsp black peppercorns⁠
● 1⁄2 tsp salt⁠
● 10 (20g) large dried chillies (soaked in warm water for 25 minutes & then finely chopped)⁠
● 1 tsp grated galangal⁠
● 1 stalk lemongrass (white part only, finely chopped)⁠
● Rind of 1/4 kaffir lime (finely chopped)⁠
⁠
METHOD ✅⁠
1️⃣Start by cooking the rice. At the same time, chop all vegetables. Dice the onion and cut capsicum and eggplant into 1 cm cubes.⁠
2️⃣Next heat your pan, add olive oil then all vegetables. Whilst your vegetables are cooking, slice the chicken breast into pieces.⁠
3️⃣ Once the vegetables have started to gain some colour, turn up the heat, then add the chicken and begin to sear. ⁠
4️⃣ Now add the curry paste and cook for 2 minutes, followed by the coconut cream.⁠
5️⃣ Cook for another 15 minutes, letting the sauce reduce. Once ready, serve with rice and tear some Thai green basil up to garnish.⁠

Let’s be real. No food is “junk”. 🙅‍♀️Food is food. Sure, some have a little more nutrients than others, but none of it is junk. One of my clients in my 1:1 coaching program recently told me “I feel like I can’t stop eating JUNK!” 😫First thing, we clarified that no food is “junk”. Second thing, I told her this is 180% normal. When you’ve deemed food as “junk” for so long and didn’t allow yourself to eat it OF COURSE your body is going to soak it all up when it’s finally allowed to have some. ✨It’s literally a biological response. ✨It thinks the “junk” is scarce, so it stocks up on it while it can. . 
After assuring her that she wasn’t going cray-cray 🤪and wouldn't be living off of thin mints for the rest of her life, we set out to teach her how to eat these ‘junk’ foods without going “overboard” and feeling food coma-ed. ☺️To eat them in a way that she still felt like she could move and feel fab. 🤩A week later we chatted and she couldn’t stop GUSHING about how much better she felt and that she actually wanted to eat some fruit and veggies again. 🍎🥕Not because she felt that she “should” but she legit WANTED to. And guess what? She still had some of those thin mints, cause, uh.. they’re heaven. 😍BUT she didn’t feel over stuffed, guilty, or stressed about it. Amazing, right?❤️
