Growing up in a black Caribbean family emotions were really not a huge thing. I know a lot of people who’s parents and families always seem to move from emotions. Constantly being in survival mode may leave no room to deal with or manage emotions. What I am seeing is that a lot of people are now living with those repercussions of not learning how to deal with serious emotions they may encounter. Sometimes leaving us feeling alone or misunderstood. For some, maybe they were told they were too emotional as a child, for others it could be “just be strong”, “stop crying” or people telling them that “they’re okay”.

Many of us find ourselves bombard by messages like these every day. We scroll the gram for the "one quote of wisdom" that will finally help, motivate, inspire us to take action. ⠀⠀
The thing is that common knowledge does not always equal the greatest wisdom.
⠀⠀
Wether you believe it or not, truth is that we are bombarded with short little messages like these constantly - on social media and often times also by our friends and family. We try our best to apply these messages to our life, consciously and subconsciously and feel worse when we cannot "accomplish" them.
⠀⠀
When we hear things like, “you are perfect just as you are,” or "be grateful, others have it worse", we may try to apply that in areas of our life where it doesn’t fit. There was a time in my life where I felt so lost, crying myself to sleep and knowing that there were people out there starving, didn't make it any better - quite the contrary..
⠀⠀
Above there are a few messages that I see everywhere floating around in this online space we all have created. They may be helpful for some people, at some stage of their journey, but let this post be a gentle reminder that they might actually prevent you from doing the work you are avoiding. ⠀⠀
If you see something here on Instagram and it doesn’t fit what you’re going through or doesn’t capture your full situation, it’s all good. You don't have to believe or act upon whatever you read or hear about. ⠀⠀
These sayings have never fit me, they actually made it worse, which is why I have translated them into (ok much longer) but more fitting sayings for my life. ⠀⠀
Whenever I stumble across a message of well-intended wisdom, I take a second to THINK:
1. Is it TRUE?
2. Is it HELPFUL?
3. Is it INSPIRING?
4. Is it NECESSARY?
5. Is it KIND?

I took the photos on the right yesterday before going shopping. I took the photo on the left June 24th 2014. Almost 6 years ago.
I decided a year ago I no longer wanted to feel like a prisoner in my own body.
I’m down over 125lbs and I still have plenty to go!

Reminiscing on this cozy photo shoot from last March with @leahkelleyphotography (which, um, hello, was almost a YEAR ago?!?!) 😮🕯✨
⠀⠀
You guys, I seriously cannot believe how much my life has changed since then. I was working full time as a Social Media Specialist, running @thedaytoncreativeco with @thegemcitymama and @__blomst__ , and going through MAJOR mental health breakthroughs. I was incredibly career-driven, and although things felt like they were falling into place, I also felt an uneasiness I couldn’t quite identify.
⠀⠀
So, I started to change things. ⠀⠀
I redid my entire branding for Honeyteller, I quit my full time job to become a freelancer for a boutique digital marketing agency, I started focusing on my novel again, I tried out a new church, and still, nothing felt quite right.
⠀⠀
Little did I know, however, that I was about to become a mother. Two weeks after this photo was taken, I received my first positive pregnancy test. I felt pure joy and excitement over the news, but with it also came tidal waves of anxiety. I was worried about carrying to term, how we would afford it, and whether I’d be a good mom. ⠀⠀
As if that weren’t enough, I was also laid off from my freelancing job just TWO weeks after finding out I was pregnant, so you can imagine the uproar my life was in. I had this perfect plan for my budding career and life as a mom, and then God dumped it all upside down and said, “try again.”
⠀⠀
I was so distraught in the beginning because I so desperately wanted to be a work-from-home mom, but I’ve ultimately landed in a much better position now than I ever thought possible. ⠀⠀
Instead of being a freelancer for a person that didn’t respect my pregnancy or mental health needs, I’ll now be a part-time employee for a company that respects motherhood and mental health in the biggest way possible, and I’ll get to use my social media and content creation skills to help serve a mission I’m DEEPLY passionate about. 🙏🏻 ( #prolife) ⠀⠀
I’m sad I won’t get to be with my baby all day every day, but for the three days a week I am away, I hope she’ll one day understand and be proud of the work I’m doing for other mothers and babies. 💛

Have been finding things still very difficult so thought I would write out a few coping skills that have been helping me ignore urges to restrict and relapse and help me to proceed in my recovery. ⭐️Remember the shitty feeling you feel will pass, feeling full will pass, feeling guilty will pass and feeling anxious will pass.
⭐️Keep In mind recovery is progress not perfection.
⭐️Slipping up doesn’t mean you should give up for the rest of the day. That’s like dropping your phone and then trying to smash it.
⭐️It’s just food, it is an object, it does not control you nor define you. You have the power to control your feelings. ⭐️When you feel like your loosing control, stop and breathe, notice how your body feels, what you smell, what you hear and what you see, it helps calm and ground. ⭐️FAT is not a feeling, F.A.T= Find Another Thought.
⭐️Be general on yourself, treat yourself as your own best friend.
⭐️Even when you slip up, aim to continue.

Have been finding things still very difficult so thought I would write out a few coping skills that have been helping me ignore urges to restrict and relapse and help me to proceed in my recovery. ⭐️Remember the shitty feeling you feel will pass, feeling full will pass, feeling guilty will pass and feeling anxious will pass.
⭐️Keep In mind recovery is progress not perfection.
⭐️Slipping up doesn’t mean you should give up for the rest of the day. That’s like dropping your phone and then trying to smash it.
⭐️It’s just food, it is an object, it does not control you nor define you. You have the power to control your feelings. ⭐️When you feel like your loosing control, stop and breathe, notice how your body feels, what you smell, what you hear and what you see, it helps calm and ground. ⭐️FAT is not a feeling, F.A.T= Find Another Thought.
⭐️Be general on yourself, treat yourself as your own best friend.
⭐️Even when you slip up, aim to continue.

First let me say I write this post from personal experience. I’ve been burnt out, and I know how awful it feels when you’re there. You have a list of things to do but you have no energy. You’re exhausted. You don’t know how to feel better. If you’ve been there you know it sucks. It painful. In some of my worst moments, I yearned to all my needs taken care of by others. The ultimate burn out fantasy.

Situations like burnout cry for you to take care of YOU. When you’re maxed out, you don’t have the energy for anything, much less yourself. So in light of this, I have created a list for you. Follow this checklist when things feel really hard. Worry about the near term stuff first, and the big stuff later. Things will slowly start to feel a little better.

□ - SAY NO - Call in sick. Clear your schedule.Set boundaries with people who want things from you. Scale back. This is your permission slip to be selfish. □ - DRINK WATER AND EAT COMFORTING FOOD - Go back to basics; hydrate, treat yourself to a yummy meal. Let yourself enjoy even if it’s just for a brief moment.
□ - CRY AND EXPRESS - Let your emotions out. Don’t keep your hopelessness, pain, exhaustion and overwhelm to yourself. This is mandatory.
□ - SUPPORT - Call a friend or family member who can be with you in this. Make an appointment with a therapist. You do not have to go through this alone and you shouldn’t.
□ - TAKE A BREAK - Watch a movie. Read a book. Give your thinking mind a break. Sure you have stuff to handle but taking breaks is actually an essential tool to resourcing yourself.
□ - REST - Unplug. Put your phone down. Take magnesium supplements or an Epsom salt bath to wind down. Put yourself to bed early. Light candles, and diffuse lavender. Try to rev your body down a little.

This is a one foot in front of the other process. Start with taking care of your short term needs first. Let your support team (friends, therapist, doctor, family, bodyworkers) help you figure out the big stuff later. .

These colour wraps are definitely some of my favourites. Only a few of these are left to be made. Like most of the wraps I make, they are made from ends...meaning that once the colour is gone..they’re gone forever (unless of course, I find the matching colour- which rarely happens). But this is how it goes.

I'm not afraid to admit it. I'm stressed. I'm not okay. There is a of #mentalhealthmotivation going on right now and I'm not new to it all. Since becoming a mom I suffer from OCD, Anxiety, Depression. I try to hide these issues by stuffing medication down my throat but every once in a while those medications don't do exactly what I want them to..which is keep me out of a funk.

Baby girl has had the flu, I've been off of work for 3 days after coming home from a long educational trip, my homework is piling up, the laundry is piling up, and my 6 year old wants me to play. It feels like every part of me is being pulled in every direction.
So it's okay if you need a day..to just lay in bed and forget your responsibilities..to shut your phone off...to remind yourself that you are human and you can only do so much at once.
Take care of yourself.

Depression in older adults is common, but is NOT a normal part of healthy aging. Depression in older adults is not always recognized because the symptoms may not align with the symptoms of younger individuals, or may be mistaken for symptoms of brain disorders like Alzheimer's. Depression is likely to result from large losses that occur as we age, such as with the death one and retirement.
Older adults with depression may feel tired,have trouble sleeping, seem grumpy or irritable, become confused, or have attention problems. Other symptoms include, but are not limited to, moving or talking more slowly, eating more or less that results in unplanned weight change, frequent crying, thoughts of death or suicide, and suicide attempts.
If you dealing with significant stress, feel depressed, or have thoughts of or are hurting yourself, please consult your doctor for the proper help to get better.

This post IS going to be REAL & RAW which is what I told myself when I started this journey - to be UNAPOLOGETICALLY ME!!!!! I’m overcome with emotion looking at both of these photos taken nearly 9 YEARS apart 👌. The women in the first picture had undiagnosed postpartum depression & anxiety and was just LOST. I got pregnant my final semester in college so I literally graduated that Demeter, married my husband in January then gave birth 2 months later! My life changed SO fast and SO drastically in a short amount of time! YES - I was beyond blessed to be married and to be able to grow then birth a perfect baby girl BUT I lost ME and who I was. FAST FORWARD to TODAY - it’s been one hell of rocky road!!!!!! I’ve had to pull myself out of a state of depression which I was sleeping ALL weekend every weekend for a couple of years when my daughter was probably 2-3 years old, I was so depressed I literally stayed in bed kissing EVERYTHING with her BUT over the years I’ve pulled myself out of the trenches finding who I am, who I’m meant to be, and learning that other peoples opinions of me and my life are none of my damn business!!!!!!!! Along the way, I found exercise, I found how to fuel my body for sufficient energy levels and to just feel OPTIMAL, I’ve learned to meditate and to journal and above all else learn that taking time for ME and focusing on MY HEALTH AND MINDSET IS OK 💯🙌. It is NOT selfish by any means. And lastly, I found
COMMUITIES of women that inspire me to be my best, that cheer me on when things get tough and are just there for accountability so I LIVE MY BEST LIFE!!!!!! Y’all if you are lost or depressed or have anxiety, do NOT feel less than and know you are not alone. If I can get through this (and I’m a constant work in progress) you can too! FIND YOURSELF A COMMUNITY who stands behind you! Sometimes we don't even know what one person is hiding and carrying everyday in their heart. It can be the heaviest weight for them.
Don't think if someone is looking fine they must be fine. Reach out to people and ask if they need help.
Let's be considerate of this, Even if you feel the person is doing fine. Always assume to not know what's behind. This way, you can be more kind and more compassionate towards every person in every situation❤️

,Ich erlaube mir nicht ‚normal‘ zu essen, wenn ich nicht beim Sport war oder X Schritte am Tag gemacht habe. Hast du Tipps für mich?‘ Genau diese Frage bekomme ich von euch wirklich oft gestellt. Viele von euch klingen dabei regelrecht verzweifelt und ich kann es zu 100% nachvollziehen, denn genau das war auch lange Zeit mein größtes Problem! Wenn ich nicht beim Sport war bzw. mein Sportpensum und noch dazu eine gewisse Anzahl an Schritten erreicht hatte, war mein schlechtes Gewissen da. Das schlechte Gewissen, ‚faul‘ zu sein und sich das Essen verdienen zu müssen. Jeden Tag auf‘s Neue. Wisst ihr wie anstrengend das war? Und vor allem war es alles andere als nachhaltig und gesund. Ich bin die Letzte, die etwas gegen einen aktiven Lebensstil sagt, aber Pausen gehören genau so dazu und sind enorm wichtig. Für mich war das bis vor kurzem noch richtig unangenehm, wenn ich einmal nicht zum Sport gegangen bin. Am Anfang habe ich mich regelrecht dazu zwingen müssen und hatte auch ein schlechtes Gewissen dabei. ABER genau das ist der Punkt: viele sehen Sport als Mittel zum Zweck. Als einzige Möglichkeit, sich Essen ohne dieses schlechte Gewissen ,zu erlauben‘ und das geht dann oft so weit, dass es anfängt, deinen Alltag zu bestimmen. Aber wozu? Glaubt ihr, dadurch so einen enormen Vorteil im Leben zu erlangen? Macht euch das langfristig glücklich? Und macht ihr es in dem Ausmaß wirklich gerne? An dieser Stelle muss man wirklich anfangen abzuwiegen und zu verstehen, dass wir keine Maschinen sind. Anstatt uns zu bestrafen sollten wir versuchen, so gut es geht, mit unserem Körper zu arbeiten und ihn zu versorgen DAMIT wir Leistung erbringen können und uns dabei gut fühlen.🙏❤️
