So grateful for these friends. Stu and Becca (or Bu, as we’ve affectionately grown to know them), invited me to visit the hiking trails in Shenandoah National Park for the day. It was an absolutely gorgeous day on the mountain and now we are enjoying sandwiches in Charlottesville and having the best day. Happy 103rd birthday, National Park Service. #nationalparks #nationalparkservicebirthday

On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed law creating the National Park Service.
Today marks the 103rd birthday of one of the best institutions that has ever existed in this country. As a way to celebrate all National Parks have free entry today. I will forever be in awe of the amazing sights that the Lord created. It would be a waste not to enjoy and preserve them. #nationalparks #nature #america #rawbeauty #outdoors

I’m not as picky yet when it comes to astrophotography, so cloudy or not the Milky Way is still fascinating. Taken last night at the Madison River in Yellowstone.

    Badlands...
.
.
This time last year, we were driving cross-country - for the third time, from NJ to Seattle. After being in Boston for my wife’s work for 9 months, she took a permanent position at a Seattle hospital, and this would be our new home for awhile.
Each time we’ve driven cross country, we’ve taken a different route. This time, since it was late summer, we opted for a more northern route which would take us through a few national parks...one of them being Badlands in South Dakota.
Badlands NP is stunningly gorgeous. We visited the park for the later half of the day, then drove thru to just outside, where we stayed for the night, in an 1880’s Homesteaders Cabin! Then the next day, went back in and explored some more before continuing on to Yellowstone & Grand Teton.
Badlands is in southwestern South Dakota and it protects 242,756 acres (379.3 sq mi) of sharply eroded buttes and pinnacles, along with the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the US (where we saw TONS of prairie dogs!). For 11,000 years, Native Americans have used this area for their hunting grounds. Long before the Lakota were the little-studied paleo-Indians, followed by the Arikara people. Their descendants live today in North Dakota as a part of the Three Affiliated Tribes. The Lakota people were the first to call this place "mako sica" or "land bad."
Cool fact: It is one site where the black-footed ferret, one of the most endangered mammals in the world, was reintroduced to the wild! And, Dances with Wolves (1990) was partially filmed in the park.

NP #8. The Great Smokies are the most visited national park in the country, due in part to its skiing (which I clearly could not do), but not the least of which due to the stunning Appalachian scenery. I will admit, some tears came to my eyes.

In case you were wondering if paradise exists, we'd like to introduce you to Mount Rainier National Park in #Washington in all its summer glory. Lush with lupine blooms with subtle light kissing the mountain tops, it's a true alpine wonderland. Follow the family-friendly Nisqually Vista Trail, or enjoy a more challenging adventure on the Skyline Trail to experience incredible views. Each path brings its own majesty. You know those places you visit that make you feel small? Not the bad kind of small that makes you feel unimportant, but the good kind.

The kind that opens your eyes to the grand possibilities of the world. The kind that inspires you and leaves you feeling awestruck.

This place gave me those -I feel small but inspired and empowered and important- feels.

I love leaving a place feeling that sort of way✨
