Today's Fringe shows were... #Dalloway from @dyadproductions. An absolutely *incredible* performance from @vaughanrebecca in the title role matched by brilliant lighting, minimal staging and a great script by @townendjones. 90 minutes absolutely sped by.

Next up was an entirely different kettle of fish! #DesKapital in the rather wonderfully named I'm Loving Engels Instead. In reality, "Des" was my old history teacher, Andy Thomas, and this comedy musical about Communism was a lot of fun, with a great version of the Pink Panther theme tune and the best essay on Richard Arkwright I have ever heard.

Finally, I wrapped the day up with a double dose of @phammond9 and his two shows. Always my favourite Dictionary Corner guest on #Countdown, these shows were laugh aloud funny with a punch to the gut at times and a genuinely passionate message and dialogue about the NHS, these were a great end to another great day here at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Can’t believe it has taken me so long to watch this. I have bawled my way through their milestones saying ‘this is our story’ and had exactly the same conversations with my husband when trying to come to terms with and grieving each failed stage of our journey. It was almost identical to what we went through even down to the family member going through IVF for us for it not to work. The one thing which I am definitely grateful for is that we live in the UK and were able to get a round of IVF with my own eggs and a donor cycle on the NHS. We are so unbelievably lucky. It is only now we are on our sibling cycles that we have to pay but even then it is a fraction of what people pay in the US. #ourstory #ivfjourney #ivf #donoreggivf #deivf #deivfsuccess #onemoreshot #thankful #nhs

I loveeee coming home from work to this little man! It means we get to go for ice cream at 10:30pm in his pjs - cause I’m a super responsible big sister 👀😂♥️

When Mia Mifsud lined up on the start line of the under 5s race at the British Transplant Games, to her parents and doctors she was already a winner. The 3 year old had both kidneys removed by the time she was three months old, then a kidney transplant from her Dad after two years on dialysis. This summer she started walking for the first time and now - there's no stopping her. Our reporter Antoine Allen @antoinespeaker interviewed her proud parents and the Transplant Specialist team at Evalina London Children Hospital that has supported and cared for her.

I had a partial #thyroidectomy at the #calderdaleroyalhospital in #Halifax couple of weeks back. On discharge I was given a feedback form which I didn’t really give much thought, wish I’d taken my time instead of scribbling quick answers down. Although the staff were absolutely fantastic, professional and efficient, Looking back I recall the meals were not up to scratch.
I asked the staff if the food was halal, they provided me with a halal menu too but I still ordered from the standard menu pictured above.
The first picture was my lunch, it was dry piece of fish with a bland sauce, vegetables which lacked flavour, luckily seasoning was provided, the mash had an unusual dry texture. The main meal was served late as the fish wasn’t cooked and I didn’t order peas.
The second picture , was over seasoned vegetable soup, way too much pepper, served with cold sliced bread.
Third was sticky toffee pudding which again was dry.
For breakfast I had cereal, toast was also available, no eggs!
Snack consisted of custard cream biscuits and tea.
The evening before I had toast and tea (after my operation, which was too dry as my throat was sore from the breathing tube) .
I ordered food for the evening too but I was discharged before then so I’m guessing that meal will have gone to waste.
The canteen food is much better, at least the staff are getting decent food. In future I would ask family to bring my main meals for me.
The doctors were fab but seemed rush and there was little privacy, the 3 other patients could Over hear me, luckily it wasn’t anything too personal and we all were there for the same reason
I don’t like being bed bound and having stuff done for me, I can’t stress enough how brilliant the staff were. #nhs #pruleith #nhsmeals #nhsfood #hospitalfood #jamieoliver #jamesmartin

I used to be the most high capacity capable person I know. (It was a bit of a front most of the time). Grief has lost my ability to function in any way other than survival mode (most of the time). I’ve given myself a break where I can this summer - picnics have been pre brought and not included me home making stuff. I’ve told myself being together is the best thing this summer has to offer. Ive let go of the pressure of making memories and trying to have the most fun and the best summer ever. In the mean time within the sadness and the strain of grief we’ve had fun and made memories without any pressure. This bank holiday weekend has so far been fabulous - its not a big deal it’s about family and friends. :

Last night was pretty dejecting, I didn’t think I’d feel so down and emotional by simply returning home from a glorious week away at the seaside. It wasn’t perfect, cause heck, is any holiday with 2 full-on little whirlwinds in tow?! But it was perfect for us. A welcome distraction. Stepping inside home yesterday afternoon filled me with utter dread; back to the reality of the life that I’ve had no choice but to succumb to and nothing to distract me. I need plans, goals, trips booked, a focus, something to look forward to. I mentally and physically cannot stay cooped up within these 4 walls for an entire day anymore, too much time to think equates to mournful tears, mourning for the life I won’t be living with my precious children, torturing myself over every aspect of their life from their school years, to dentist appointments, to assisting their clothes/style, to retail therapy with my big girl, to when they’re sick and I can’t kiss them better, to losing their first tooth and meeting their first girlfriend/boyfriends, their morning cuddles in my big bed and watching endless Blippi and steam trains on YouTube. IT FUCKING SUCKS. And you couldn’t even begin to imagine the feeling of torture, desperation, grief, loss, resentment, envy, sheer panic I live in every day. Where we financially can, and I’m physically able, I will make as many trips, outings and plans as I can...they don’t even have to cost anything! It keeps me sane and hopefully are memories of me that I desperately hope will ingrain deep in to my children at their young, tender age and can be jogged by photos and related miscellaneous items placed in their memory boxes. My Mum has organised a huge family trip away for a week in September to Somerset and I’m already looking at @airbnb and @menaiholidays for an October trip to see family in North Wales!

I’ve been at work for about 2 weeks now and I’m finally starting to settle into the hospital and know my way around.
I’m based on one ward, which I worked at for a few days, but as soon as I started feeling comfortable here and knowing how things work I was moved to another ward!
So everything started again, I had to get to know the nurses again, figure out which to stay clear off and which ones I could go to for help and support. I had to also find out where things are kept, try to start remembering the patients and their stories. I feel better patient care is given when you know the patients by their names, as opposed to just knowing them by their bed number.
Then after a few days thankfully I started to get more comfortable in this second ward.
But guess what, now I’m moving again to a different ward for 2 days 😭
Maybe I should just learn to not get comfortable in once place as I seem to be moving around all the time... even though the next ward isn’t the speciality I’m in!

I can however say it’s a very interesting experience and I’m having to try to adapt as best as I can and as quickly as possible to be able to give the best care for patients that I can. I guess moving wards also helps to try and stop me from getting any sort of attachment with the patients, as when you start to see a person everyday you can’t help but start to form some sort of liking towards them.
Anyway I’m starting nights soon so I’m quite apprehensive about this! Let’s see how it goes.

Spent 6 hours in an antenatal class today which was worth it just to see Ryan meditate, put a nappy and clothes on a doll and then try to get a woollen breast into said doll's mouth. What a fantastic Saturday. 😂😂
In all seriousness though, thank God for the NHS and the midwives who run the courses because today was actually really great and we didn't pay a penny (apart from the extortionate hospital parking, but that's another story.) 👩🏼‍⚕️

So I'm going to do a little day by day Tonsillectomy recovery photo diary (if Isaac let's me take a picture)
I have scoured the Internet for posts about the procedure and what it's like post-op because I needed to know what we were letting ourselves in for, so this will hopefully be useful for other people.... So the first pic is from a few days ago and this was what his "pesky" Tonsils looked like, taking up all his throat and it wasn't great for him at all, but now they are gone!We are now 29 hrs post op and (PIC 2) is minus his "pesky" Tonsils. The difference already is clear, he's eating better and talking better/clearer, his voice sounds so different and not in a "I've got a sore throat 'cause I had my Tonsils out" way. He is in some pain but it's mostly been managable for him so far with the help of regular pain relief. He's now gone to bed, so we'll see how he is during the night, hopefully he'll have a good sleep. 😴

This photo absolutely melted my heart when I first saw it 💕 I’ve just spent five days in hospital after an emergency operation, and now I’m finally home with hubby and Freddie, and it feels sooooo good! A special thanks to my Mum, @louise6manville, who flew up to Scotland to help us out. I’m not quite sure what I would have done without you, plus Freddie enjoyed his extra time with ‘Oma’. All the staff at Ninewells Hospital (Ward 8) were so helpful and lovely, which made my long stay that much easier. It’s good to be home though!

My brave little solider @harry.snd , bailed whilst dropping into a ramp at the skate park to avoid a 4 year old that came out of nowhere. Ended up with a brake, fracture and dislocation. Just under 4 hours at A&E. They were amazing, thank you NHS Epsom. On the mend now but at least 5 weeks out of action. Very proud of how he handled it all. #blessed #bustedarm #scootercrash #proudofmyboy #nhs #speedyrecovery

One of the most exciting and rewarding days of my career as a doctor! ⁣
⁣
Today I was assisting with elective Caesarean sections. I just can’t describe how incredible it is to make a few cuts to the abdomen and pull out a tiny human being 😱⁣
⁣
Also by assisting I actually mean just holding a retractor - not sure I actually made any contributions to the whole surgery 🤦🏻‍♀️⁣
⁣
I was however responsible for holding the newborn baby up for the mother to see from the other side of the curtain and pass it onto the midwife afterward. I was crapping myself that I’d drop the slimy and wriggly baby (no casualties I promise) ⁣
⁣
The obstetric ward is a part of the hospital I’d never set foot in. It’s a whole new world with a completely different way of functioning. Midwives run the ward and do most of the patient care, rather than doctors. ⁣
⁣
It’s going to be a super steep learning curve. But I’m ready!! ⁣

A drink and 3 course meal for £1.49- impossible? Of course it is!!! That's all the hospitals have to spend on food for patients. I wrote an article in 2017 for The Oldie (you can find it on my website) where I expressed my view that good healthy food would improve recovery for patients therefore freeing up much needed hospital beds.
I am delighted that @borisjohnsonmp and @matthancockmp have announced today that there will be a full review of hospital food. As an advisor to this review I feel optimistic that with the Prime Ministers personal determination that we could be on the brink of offering healthy and nutritious meals to all patients and staff. #NHS #hospitalfood #PM #DepartmentofHealth #patientchoice #soilassociation #nationalassociationofcaterers #healthyfood #recovery

Joy of being me this week! Rushed, mentally exhausted, physically drained and a list as long as the other list I have yet to complete!! Add a very sharp knife, lack of concentration and frantic behaviour, you are left with a very deep cut, flappy flesh, lots of blood and a dressing you are too afraid to look under ! An impromptu visit to A&E, a mad dash to find someone to look after the sleeping kids and the realisation that perhaps just perhaps the universe needs you to stop... So thank you #nhs for looking after us. Thank you to our bodies (whom we are quick to criticise) for healing nicely. Now if you are looking for me I will be doing everything with one hand slower than usual, feeling grateful for all I have ! #godbless #grateful #couldbeworse

You may have noticed that I’ve not posted anything in a while. Life threw my family a curve ball a few weeks ago and whilst we’re not out of the woods yet, my beautiful Mummy is on the road to recovery.
Thank you to the doctors and nurses who worked tirelessly around the clock to save her and work continuously now to care for her. The NHS truly are fantastic.
She is one hell of a woman and a fighter. Love you Mummy. X

A final goodbye to the Upper GI Enhanced Recovery Unit nursing staff. It’s been a pleasure #savinglives #nhs
