Idk what I’m more proud of. The fact that I hit 10k steps before 2pm today or that (even tho I still have a ways to go) I finally felt strong today! 🥳 either way we out here grinding at not only life but also these front squats (that 125kg dub got me like 🥴)

I literally had to strap up mid set because my Hook was failing 😫

Did heavy deadlifts for the first time in many months, slight ego mode activation because of how the platforms were setup lol, anyways so my highest set was 140kg (not much, but honest work lol) 2 reps hook grip, then 2 with emergency straps 😁

Also did some C&J work, needed several tries, but got up an 80kg clean, tried to power jerk, but almost took my head off (bar went a little past my head vertically, had to ninja under it)

Tomorrow's supposed to be a pretty heavy squat day, but we'll see about that 🙏

Lifetime PR on clean&jerk at 132kg/291lbs - weighing 82.2kg today. After today’s programming on #pendlaywod I progressed up on clean&jerk with 110kg/115kg/120kg/126kg/126kg/132kg/135kg. My legs were done, the 135kg standup attempt was definitely not happening today. But, give me 2 weeks! This extra work on jerks and front squats is paying great dividends. Rack Pulls: The weightlifting equivalent of how big is your not so big manhood contest. Great for ego though! In actuality this is a fantastic compound movement that works just about everything! I hit 535lb for one. I’m curious to see what I will get once my strength comes back and then some. I went for 600lb twice after 535lb but failed miserably both times lol. Straight up heavy day before the cny break 🐀

Added a cool warm up to feel for extension and timing of the snatch turnover - floating snatches.
.
Some close grip snatches to speed up turnover, then it was off to the races with heavy singles.

Not too bad I guess, considering the heavy daily squat volume over the week. Glad to have only 1 miss at 68 snatch

Last summer I did the Bergeron Big Clean Complex with the squad at the old gym. Failed the last part of the complex at 205. Today I gave it another shot and completed the complex at 205. Split jerk was so ugly, but count it! 😅 If you know me, you know I love long complexes like this. Looking forward to doing this again in the coming weeks. Next time I’ll need a squad to lift with! Who’s joining me?

When we hit plateau in training, sometimes we need to address weaknesses outside of the gym.

When we work with athletes who experience plateaus in their lifts, we first address the proper adjustments in their training. At that point, if progression still isn’t moving along as it should, we look at nutrition. A massing cycle could be the answer.

Many times this plateau will happen when a client is cutting weight, and we have to have the difficult conversation: "At this point, what is more important to you - breaking through this plateau, or finishing the cut that we have planned?" It is up to them to make this decision, but ultimately we cannot expect to eat in a caloric deficit and get stronger.

There are exceptions, but at some point, you’ll likely hit a wall. She may even be eating enough and maintaining weight, but everything is "stuck.” This is also an appropriate time to consider doing a massing cycle, if strength truly is your number one goal.

You might put on a little bit of body fat, but eventually, you can enter a cut if you want to bring it back down - this isn't a forever phase. Upping calories is not only going to help build some muscle to encourage a breakthrough in your plateau, but you’re going to have more energy to do so.

When we hit plateau in training, sometimes we need to address weaknesses outside of the gym.

When we work with athletes who experience plateaus in their lifts, we first address the proper adjustments in their training. At that point, if progression still isn’t moving along as it should, we look at nutrition. A massing cycle could be the answer.

Many times this plateau will happen when a client is cutting weight, and we have to have the difficult conversation: "At this point, what is more important to you - breaking through this plateau, or finishing the cut that we have planned?" It is up to them to make this decision, but ultimately we cannot expect to eat in a caloric deficit and get stronger.

There are exceptions, but at some point, you’ll likely hit a wall. She may even be eating enough and maintaining weight, but everything is "stuck.” This is also an appropriate time to consider doing a massing cycle, if strength truly is your number one goal.

You might put on a little bit of body fat, but eventually, you can enter a cut if you want to bring it back down - this isn't a forever phase. Upping calories is not only going to help build some muscle to encourage a breakthrough in your plateau, but you’re going to have more energy to do so.

I have always been told by some very strong and knowledgeable people that if you want to know how strong/knowledgeable someone is watch them walk away and look at their back.

True strength comes from your posterior chain and developing that base to build on.
#
Wide backs, traps, shoulders pulled back, muscular butts are all signs that someone can move some weight and have spent some serious time in the gym.
#
People love to train the “show me” muscles (biceps, chest, etc) and look absolutely ridiculous when that is all you train.
#
People trained by me will tell you I put a huge emphasis on back muscles and making sure everything on your backside are being worked.

Not great video quality...but after a quick shoulder massage from @jakelivesalot and chiro visit to @ben_mcnutt my shoulder mobility is feeling great... this was my 5th rep at 85% and it still felt great...its important to have a great team of professionals to keep your body moving.

✅When using hook grip wrap the second finger over the cuticle of the thumb. This enables a larger area for a bar to pass through and a stronger lock. First finger just rests on top. It doesn’t play a roll in gripping the thumb.

❌Try to avoid gripping with the first finger. This tightens the space where the bar passes through and creates an uncomfortable feeling. Due to the tight space the bone in the thumb will experience pressure from the bar.

After doing lighter sets of 2 reps with 90 kg @becks_jk did a strong single with 105 kg. Even though it’s pressy he is able to reach up quicker to receive snatches due to improvements in his shoulder mobility. @moranmtm does snatch triples with 60 kg from blocks. @andrew.morrison snatched 115 kg from a deficit for dubs. Great day of training. @thebarfitnessclub @fortissportsusa @mississippi_barbell

To say I have been absent from social media is an understatement. 2019 was a big year for me filled with many highs and equal frustrations. I competed and made it to the podium at provincials, expanded and moved my gym to a new and bigger location, got married, went on honeymoon, added a new english bulldog puppy to the mix, and at the same time suffered a concussion which put my training which was already at a plateau to a stand still. ⁠

After battling with bouts of depression, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating due to my concussion I was eager to back into my training routine to reach my goal of qualifying for Nationals. But since recovering, I have been fighting a host of other issues and injuries which I can only describe as my form of purgatory. ⁠

As emotional and frustrated as I get, I need to remind myself the reality of weightlifting. Some days, weeks, or months it goes well, others it doesn’t. Progress isn’t always linear, and during challenging times, patience and consistency are key. ⁠

Weightlifting, like so much in life demands showing up day in and day out, taking small incremental steps that compound over time, leading to big gains. ⁠

Whether I like it or not, there will be plateaus. As much as this sport challenges me it teaches me to embrace or at the very least accept them even when I feel i’m going nowhere. ⁠

From the outside, weightlifting can seem dull or boring - the same movements, the same barbells day in and day out. But for me, it’s about the the joy, and fulfilment, that lives in the process.⁠

The beauty is - it's just you and the bar. You either make the lift or you don’t. If not, you hit the pavement again and train more and try again. Which makes the moment when you hit that big lift that much more worth it.⁠

With this reflection in mind my word for 2020 is resilience. To trust in the process, to keep practising and making small changes day in and day out even when I feel like I am at a standstill. ⁠

Hopefully looking back this experience will be the plateau I experience before a breakthrough. ⁠✨

Lauren and I were chatting earlier today about percentages, and she brought up the point that she struggles with programming templates at times because of how much more demanding it is on her. ⠀

Training sessions become more taxing as an athlete becomes more experienced. When I was a newer lifter and my best Clean & Jerk was 120 kg, I could work up to 90% on any given day and come back the next day fresh and ready to go. Now that my best Clean & Jerk is 190 kg, I need to be more deliberate on what I do leading up to working to a 90% weight, and prepare to have some time to recover in the day or so afterwards.⠀

Let’s make another example: In a training session, a workout that calls for an athlete to perform Power Clean triples at 75% is going to require different levels of exertion based on the strength of an athlete. An athlete whose max is 100 kg would perform the triples at 75 kg, whereas an athlete whose max is 160 kg would perform them at 120 kg. Even though the percentages are the same, the stronger athlete would ultimately be lifting a heavier load and perhaps lifting closer to their true max (versus the other athlete who may be still becoming familiar with the technique of the movement). ⠀

This is something to keep in mind for athletes following templates, particularly for the more advanced athletes following a program written for beginner to intermediate athletes. Just wanted to share!

At the world champs he went 6/6 with a 157 snatch and a 201kg clean and jerk, taking the bronze medal in the clean and jerk and 5th in the total. ⁣

Today's best clean and jerk also was today's heaviest at 105 kg 😊🏋️‍♀️ happy with my jerk on this one, managed to correct my technique from my two previous lifts and that on a heavy lift. That is a win! 😊

How to lock the arms overhead super fast and precisely, you must learn how to drive barbell by full extension.

Beginners usually rely on arm strength too much and jerk like shoulder press. Shoulder press and jerk are very different concepts. Practice your front squat dips today!
