Such an amazing day - went to Windor Castle, Bath and Stonehenge. I'm absolutely pooped and well in need of a drink (and kind of hate all tourists even though I am one... ). But it was totally worth putting up with 4 million selfie sticks to the eye, to see some of this rich history. :-P

Did you know that multi-storey houses, namely apartments, first entered our lives in the Roman period?⁣
⁣
In Rome, apartment buildings were called insulae. Today, the origin of the apartment buildings we live in is insula. Poor people usually lived in Insulas. The reason for the emergence of insulars was primarily the high population density and rents. The emergence of the insula brought some problems. Due to the plumbing and sewerage problems that did not reach the upper floors, those living in the upper floors used to drain their dirty water from the window into the street. Because of the sewage problem, there were no toilets in the houses and the public saw their needs in public toilets called latrina. In addition, the fact that so many people lived in a very limited area maximized the risk of epidemic diseases. ⁣

Henry Parke: “Young Architect Measuring the Temple of Jupiter Stator, Rome,” - Sir John Soane’s Museum
.
This architect and draughtsman in John Soane’s office has completed a fanciful view of an architect in an impractical position measuring a structure that is depicted in an idealized form.
.
The history of classicism is a history of revivals, each looking back to a Golden Age. Each revival makes its own contribution to the classical tradition, because none completely recreates the work of the past but adapts it to changed conditions. Revival is thus a spur to invention and invariably driven by an ambition to evoke or rival an imagined past.
