I’ve finally read this and I really enjoyed this. This is about the author, Julia Armfield, exploring women’s experiences in society through their bodies. The way she blended horror and science fiction and mythology and feminism into a short, little book is amazing. I see why it’s one of the best books to read of 2020. I definitely recommend this. I really did enjoy this and I look forward to seeing my followers read this and seeing y’all recommend this to your followers. Five stars #saltslow

Reading update 📖❤️ Life was really busy for the last couple of weeks so I haven’t had as much time as usual to read or to post on here. I was supposed to start “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley (I’m doing a book swap with my boyfriend and getting him to read Pride and Prejudice 🥰 he chose Brave New World for me) Because I was so short on time, I decided to start dipping into this short story collection - Salt Slow by Julia Armfield and I AM OBSESSED! Major new writing talent alert. Fans of Sally Rooney will love this writer 💛📚 I hope everyone had a lovely Valentines / Galentines weekend ! #vscogirl #vscocam #vscobooks #saltslow #juliaarmfield #readersareleaders #meetthebookstagrammer #readsharerepeat #mondayselfie #redlipstick💄 #booknerd #newhaircut #readersofinstagram #readingtime #readingisfundamental #readingislife #readingisfun #bookish #coverlover #beautifulbooks #readmorewomen #readallthebooks

When I was in the second grade I won a writing contest. The contest was in this nerdball kids magazine about computer games. I think the magazine came with a CD-ROM. My winning entry was about a homework machine that produced great work if you feed it gum and odd bits and bobbles. I’m trying to do that for my brain now. Poetry for breakfast, a fairy tale here and there, bizarre and beautiful short story collections (Salt Slow, Daydreams of Angels, Imaginary Museums), @sofia.zakia’s glittering worry dolls, Sailor Moon, voice memos with a friend about Hathor and Sabrina and Smaug, research for a playbook about dreaming.
I’m just taking it all in.
We’ll see what happens when it comes out... 🪐🌜

I👏🏼AM👏🏼OBSESSED👏🏼WITH👏🏼THIS👏🏼BOOK👏🏼 Newly released, this collection of flash fiction stories from debut author Nicolette Polek is absolutely fantastic in every sense of the word. Each story is a hauntingly imaginative morsel of magic that I loved so much, that I read it in one sitting and then wanted to climb inside the book. Creative doesn’t even begin to describe it, it’s an utter original. Fans of last year’s “Salt Slow” (which you know I’m also obsessed with), I urge you to check out the whimsically unnerving world of “Imaginary Museums.” The beauty and creativity that continues to be published by @softskullpress is a gift to bibliophiles everywhere - thank you so much for sending me this book, it’s incredible. 🤯💘🧿

Sunday #shelfie brought to you by 15 seconds of sunlight we had in the house yesterday. .
.
I hope you guys are having a wonderful Sunday, whenever you are and whatever you’re doing. .
.
My plans for today (after I get out of work) is to finish A River of Stars and go for a nice walk with my pup. Next I think I will pick up Salt Slow because it keeps staring at me with its beautiful cover 🤩

Happy Wednesday
.
.
Just call me a cover-whore because I cannot stop sharing pretty covers. .
.
I’ve been having a pretty busy week, and haven’t been very active on here. So, hey, what’s up? How’s life?? 😂 .
.
I am currently reading Rage Becomes Her and A Sea Made of Stars. It’s slow going, but it’s okay. I kind of really want to read Little Women ✨ .

🔵In her brilliantly inventive and haunting debut collection of stories, Julia Armfield explores bodies and the bodily, mapping the skin and bones of her characters through their experiences of isolation, obsession, love and revenge.

Teenagers develop ungodly appetites, a city becomes insomniac overnight, and bodies are diligently picked apart to make up better ones. The mundane worlds of schools and sleepy sea-side towns are invaded and transformed, creating a landscape which is constantly shifting to hold on to its inhabitants. Blurring the mythic and the gothic with the everyday, Salt Slow considers characters in motion – turning away, turning back or simply turning into something new entirely. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksofinstagram #books #booknerd #bookworm #bookaddict #bookish #thrillerbooks #bibliophile #bookobsessed #bookcommunity #readersofinstagram #bookaholic #saltslow #juliaarmfield

Do you like reading hardbacks?
.
@sally.reads tagged me a while ago to take part in #thehardbacklife so here I'm sharing some hardbacks that I'm really looking forward to reading.
.
I don't buy hardbacks, not even when I worked in Waterstones and got everything cheap. I can think of three I've bought as an adult, and all of them were ones I couldn't wait to read (and all of them have prettier covers than the paperback, so winning there!) So the vast, vast majority of hardbacks I share on here have been gifted, like this lot 📚 I don't buy them because they're pricey but mostly because they take up a lot of space, which I really don't have! Totally not sure what I'm going to do about some upcoming releases I'm dying to read, like Hilary Mantel, Emma Gannon, Dolly Alderton and Holly Bourne's new books. Will I cave? Who knows?

Here’s my stack of February possible/hopeful reads from my various sources of unread books … precariously balanced on my neighbours’ gate (as you do). 📚Doctor Zhivago (Boris Pasternak) is carried over from last month and I have calculated 17 pages a day will see this one finished by the end of the month. I can do it. 💪 Aside from Yuri and Lara, I’m getting very confused by the enormous cast of characters, but I’ve survived War and Peace, so I’m sure I can surmount Dr Zzzz. 📚I’ve started Circe (Madeline Miller) this week, which I’ve been renewing from the library for months. Not really into it yet, but should have some solid reading time to devote to it today.

I also hope to read:
📚Mansfield Park (Jane Austen) - one of the beautiful Vintage Classics I had for Christmas, which I suddenly realised I’d never actually read. I’ve seen many TV adaptations and always assumed I must have read it. Looking forward to rectifying the situation, sorry Jane.
📚The Light Years (Elizabeth Jane Howard) - I was lent this by the lady who used to come and do the outreach Post Office in our village hall. I am quite embarrassed to still have it and very much looking forward to embarking on the Cazalet saga.
📚Salt Slow (Julia Armfield) - taken from my bedside pile, I was part-way through this in November, but then moved towards more comforting, festive reads in the run-up to Christmas. I’m hoping to read a short story collection every month.
📚Fleishman is in Trouble (Taffy Brodesser-Ackner) - my one January library reservation (I’m a reformed/ing character!). After hearing so many positive reviews from some of my favourite bookstagrammers, I’m interested to see if this lives up to the hype.

So bookish friends, any thoughts on my (decidedly optimistic) stack of February reading matter? Any favourites there?

"When I was twenty-seven, my Sleep stepped out of me like a passenger from a train carriage, looked around my room for several seconds, then sat down in the chair beside my bed. This was before they became so usual, the shadow-forms of Sleep in halls and kitchens, before the mass displacement left so many people wakeful at uncertain hours of the night."
Currently reading and absolutely adoring Julia Armfield's "Salt Slow". The short stories are eerie, dark and strange, and so frickin' well executed! 😍
(For fans of Haruki Murakami - the Sleeps remind me so much of the Shadows in "Hard-boiled Wonderland" - and Samanta Schweblin)

I wish I could read this book anew a million times. Wow. A collection of short stories is not the way most authors make their debut, and usually I'm not a fan of the genre, but I was blown away by the dreamy, dark, utterly feminine, monstrous, grotesque, addictive writing found within these pages. I am definitely looking forward to whatever this author puts out next.

Tbt to me looking peachy with my beautiful books 🍑
(this was taken not long after I moved my childhood bookcase into @jnfowles apartment...I’ve now let my book collection spill over onto his shelves *blush*)
I saw the #lastnownextreads tag on the lovely @thesugarb0wl and thought it sounded like fun...
🌸 Last: I finished rereading Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway yesterday & finished The Secret Commonwealth by Philip Pullman today.
🌸 Now: I’m still working my way through the @penguinukbooks collection of Japanese short stories for #januaryinjapan
🌸 Next: I want to reread The Winter Book by Tove Jansson over my birthday in February. I was also gifted Salt Slow by Julia Armfield for Christmas by my parents. My next #nonfiction book will be Invisible Women by @ccriadoperez.
#qotd: what are your last/current/next reads?

new review up on the blog today! I absolutely loved this story collection from Julia Armfield, which combines elements of magical realism and sci-fi with female-centric coming of age stories. Definitely one of the most unique and delightful collections I’ve read in a while!

I also enjoyed visiting the fruit and vegetable exhibit at the Whitney this weekend, such a fun contemporary art piece, and I couldn’t resist snapping a pic!

January is known for bringing new beginnings and fresh perspectives for those seeking change in the new year. Whatever personal milestones you set this year, find some time to reflect over a new book that will help you embrace your goals. This next book seemed like the perfect read for the long month of January. ❄️ About the Book: Salt Slow, by Julia Armfield 📚

This collection of somewhat supernatural short stories depicts embellished realities that readers can shockingly connect with. From a story of the trials of adolescence and the desire for acceptance to the struggles of insomnia personified, Salt Slow sprinkles magic on the mundane. Armfield connects with her readers by creating an emotional connection with some of her tales, chillingly reminding readers of their own stories and personal struggles.
This is an excellent book to cuddle up with during these dark, icy, January nights. However, I would advise only reading one story at a time. ✨

About the beverage: Spicy Bloody Mary, Family Meal 🍹

Sometimes when you wake up on a particularly chilly January morning the best possibly remedy is a fresh, spicy, Bloody Mary. This delicious little cocktail at Family Meal in Frederick, MD does not disappoint. I would suggest pairing this with an equally delicious yet very fatty entree (the friend chicken and waffles is truly to die for).

Happy Sunday 🌼 .
.

I have been wanting to reorganize my main bookshelf lately. But that will take a whole day, and I don’t know if I have time for that kind of commitment 🙈
.
.
Lately I have been enjoying displaying my favorite covers. And still, no cover beats #sabrinaandcorina - I am still so in love with it. Although, Salt Slow came pretty close. It’s just so artful 😍
.

🔸Do you reorganize your shelves often?

“In the midst of all these haunted people, she sat alone, without a ghost yet longing for one, her writing like a clasp of fingers around empty air.” 🌿 ///
this is one of the books I am most looking forward to reading in 2020 and marks another of my #readingwomen challenge ♡ I’m certain that the poetry and eloquence of Julia Armfield’s words will inspire me *blush* #qotd: what are you reading this weekend?

Okay, I know that I say this a lot, but LOOK AT THIS COVER. A work of art!! .
.
I have been in a huge mood for short stories and essays lately, so this pick is no surprise. I just got it in the mail yesterday and will bump it up in my TBR. I know this has polarizing reviews online, so I’m curious to see how I like it. .
.
If you think about it - everything has polarizing views. We are so beautifully different in how we perceive books. The only times I judge the differences is when I found a book so obviously toxic, damaging, sexist etc. and I see people rating it 5⭐️. .
.
Those are often the “popularly hyped books” that we see everywhere, so I know it’s honestly a popularity contest. My only wish is that people read more critically, always dig deeper, and QUESTION EVERYTHING. .
.
🔸Being a critical reader is hard. It often takes the joy out of reading. But it’s the only way to grow as a reader. Where are you on your reading journey?🔸 .

After finishing The Secret History, I was at a bit of a loss. What exactly can follow a Donna Tartt book anyway? It turns out this short story collection was up to the task, and I was thrilled with how much I enjoyed it (not being sure short stories were really my thing).
.

I loved the way the writing was visceral and haunting, making the uncanny seem mundane. I also loved how flawed the characters were. These are stories about women who are too obsessive, too lazy, too cold - basically 'too much' in some way, 'problem women' with 'problem bodies' who don't fit in. More flawed and intense female protagonists please! What an enjoyable collection #saltslow 🌊🌿

This year one of my personal goals is to read my anthologies. I have a love/hate relationship with anthologies. On one hand I love short stories and on the other hand idk something about a collection of them doesn’t really interest me. Also how do you rate an anthology??????? However, I’m proud to say I have officially read my 1st anthology of the year and I didn’t hate it at all.
************************** Salt Slow by Julia Armfield is a lovely quirky little anthology about what it means to be a female and the experiences of women in a society that already labels them as other, but in a very eery, dark, twisted way. Some of the stories I loved and gave 5 ✨ and two I didn’t particularly care for but none of them were terrible. Overall I gave this 4 ✨, maybe 3 1/2 ✨. #tbr #tbrpost #bookstagram #booktube #saltslow #anthology #prettybooks #newpost

"Until recently, I had been seeing a man called Stephen Connolly, who had been a good kisser and appalling in all other aspects...The reality of the situation became clear eventually, but even then, it was somehow him who left me. I was tricky, he said, I asked too much of him, the things I talked about sometimes drove him mad."
.
I finished 2018 with @anna_jackdaw's spot on Christmas gift of Normal People, so it was fitting perhaps that my last read of 2019 was also her Christmas present to me, the extraordinary Salt Slow. I am not, it must be said, always that into short stories, but I absolutely adored these.

Book Review(ish)
🖤
Salt Slow by Julia Armfield is a collection of stories that "explores bodies and the bodily, mapping the skin and bones of her characters through their experiences of isolation, obsession, love and revenge. Teenagers develop ungodly appetites, a city becomes insomniac overnight, and bodies are diligently picked apart to make better ones. The mundane worlds of schools and sleepy sea-side towns are invaded and transformed, creating a landscape which is constantly shifting to hold on to its inhabitants. Blurring mythic and the gothic with everday, Salt Slow considers characters in motion - turning away, turning back or simply turning into something new."
🖤
This collection of stories is so beautiful and exquisite, dark and interesting, and even humorous and tender. As described in the synopsis, there are elements of the gothic and modern retellings of Greek mythology woven throughout the stories. There is a strong feminine feel to the stories, which I loved. One of my favourite stories was Stop Your Women's Ears With Wax, which was a modern take on The Sirens of Greek Mythology. Another favourite was The Collectables which was a darkly humorous and gothic tale covering the after effects of a breakup. Then, there was Fomerly Feral, where a girl forms a sisterly bond with her "step-sister" who is a wolf. Honestly, although these three were my favourites, each story is a treasure.
🖤
I'd say if you like books like The End We Start From or Circe, you might like this beautiful collection that was shortlisted for the Young Writer of the Year Award (@youngwriteryear)
🖤
Thank you to @fmcmassociates for sending me this gorgeous copy.

Catching up on the short stories in Salt Slow while waiting on the train. I don’t think I will ever be a short story fan, I just prefer to bury myself in a long story. But as far as short stories go, Salt Slow is pretty engaging. All the stories have a dark twist, which I quite enjoy.

Happy weekend everyone! What are you reading?! I finished SALT SLOW by Julia Armfield last month and loved it so much! I am so thankful I won a copy from @hotcocoareads and @flatiron_books so I could read it with @belletrist - I’m such a #belletristbabe !

This superbly written collection of short stories is so visceral it’s been etched into my literary loving soul. There is not a weak story in the bunch and I highly recommend each one for different reasons. Armfield touches on women and their relationship with their bodies, love, childhood, and death, all in a very dark, magical, and haunting way. I am counting the minutes until Armfield’s next book. 5 brilliant stars!

I couldn’t resist pairing this gorgeous book with my favorite peacock feather sleeve from @sewhappystitchhappy and my beloved yoga statue. Which reminds me...I need to start doing yoga again - I miss it so much.

Visit @sewhappystitchhappy for your choice of a beautiful sleeve and be sure to use code SHEREADS for a 10% discount! 🦚🦚🦚

The hottest new book out right now! . This is a beautiful read, written almost poetically. .
“In her electrifying debut, Julia Armfield explores women’s experiences in contemporary society, mapped through their bodies. As urban dwellers’ sleeps become disassociated from them, like Peter Pan’s shadow, a city turns insomniac. A teenager entering puberty finds her body transforming in ways very different than her classmates’. As a popular band gathers momentum, the fangirls following their tour turn into something monstrous. After their parents remarry, two step-sisters, one a girl and one a wolf, develop a dangerously close bond. And in an apocalyptic landscape, a pregnant woman begins to realize that the creature in her belly is not what she expected.

Blending elements of horror, science fiction, mythology, and feminism, salt slow is an utterly original collection of short stories that are sure to dazzle and shock, heralding the arrival of a daring new voice.”

The women in Julia Armfield’s brutal debut collection of stories are tormented. Some are wracked with physical pain, some are undergoing bizarre transformations, some are caught up in internal sufferings difficult to name. SALT SLOW presents one eerie world after another:  a woman raises her stepdaughter and pet wolf together, sleep gets up and walks away from the cities, on the surface of a salt ocean a woman gives birth to a leviathan, a girl group drives their fans mad. These crystalline tales are alternately gruesome, gory, and elegiac, graceful, profound. Armfield’s knack for description tugs at some deep-seated cord. Walls are meat-colored, the day is like a swallow, and the sky is “like the insides of a gutted night.” The strange remove of her narrators serves to increase the looming sense of dread though when the crest of the wave appears it rarely takes the shape you feared.

Just received both of these gorgeous little reads this week. Salt Slow was a late Christmas prezzie - I’ve been wanting to read it since it came out. And I can’t resist a beautifully designed cover, not that I ever really try that hard to resist a book coming home with me.
••
Threads by William Henry Seattle, out now in paperback, just arrived in the mail yesterday. Gorgeous inside and out - just flipped through it and the writing is a dream. Thank you so much for sending me this copy @penguinukbooks.

Just finished my first book of 2020; Salt Slow by Julia Armfield. Salt Slow is a short story collection described as a blending of horror, science fiction, mythology, and feminism. Given that intriguing combination of elements, I was really looking forward to getting my hands on this one, but it ended up being a bit of a let-down.
.
Let me start by saying that Armfield is a magnificent writer; this collection may include some of the most beautiful and captivating prose I’ve ever read. So I honestly do think it’s worth a read just for the opportunity to experience such a unique new voice in fiction. However, it left me with a lot to be desired. The plots were often convoluted, and the “meanings” seemed to get lost beneath her dreamy writing style. I found myself disconnected from many of the stories, and then as soon as my interest would peak, they would end. But perhaps that’s more a critique on short stories as a whole.
.
Of the 9 stories included in Salt Slow, the following 3 were my personal favorites:
1) The Great Awake - This was by far the best story in the collection. City dwellers suddenly find that their “sleeps” have become dissociated from their bodies. Everyone has their own “sleep” that presents as a shadowy figure that follows them around, and leaves them as an insomniac. In the wake of this strange phenomenon, both individuals and institutions change in order to capitalize on the new amount of productive time that now exists.
.
2) Formerly Feral - A young girls father remarries to a woman who is raising a wolf as a child. The young girl now refers to the wolf as her “stepsister”, and similarities are made between animal-like behavior and the experience of being a teenage girl going through puberty.
.
3) Cassandra After - A woman comes to terms with the death of her first girlfriend, when she shows up at her door after having been buried. This story plays out with commentary on grief, sexuality, and personal acceptance.
Overall I give this collection a ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

‘Salt Slow’ by Julia Armfield reminded me why I love short stories. She manges to have quite the punch in just about twenty pages for each stories. They were dark and I loved it. It focuses on women characters and all kinds of experiences. There is obsession and love...from characters becoming insects or turning to stone to a new world where water has taken over the land. Pretty great. This was my last read of 2019. 4/5🌟

Kicking off the new year by getting around to the @belletrist December book! This bionic woman mural felt like the right backdrop for this collection of eerie, feminist stories.

Happy New Year!! While I am going to discuss what I want to read this month, I’m also going to talk about my goals for the year because I want to document them but I don’t really want to make a whole post dedicated to them either (mostly bc idk what I’d use for the picture lol)
.
.
As far as this month, I want to read these three books along with Rose Madder by Stephen King. I’m taking part in the #normandanielsisadick readalong hosted by @strictlystephenking so I’m looking forward to it! I also chose Assassian’s Apprentice for the #unreadshelfproject2020 reading challenge this month (go check out @theunreadshelf if you have a huge tbr collection!). I would love to finish Salt Slow and start Misery, too. I’m really excited for all of these books because I feel like they all have five star potential😮
.
.
As far as my yearly goals, I’ve been thinking about this a lot and I have quite a few😂 I finally settled on the number of books to be 52. I read 55 in 2019, but I’m going to be busier this year and I want to watch more movies since there are SO many classics I haven’t seen yet. Here are my other goals:
1. Read more science/nonfiction books (since I’m studying to be a chemistry teacher)
2. Read more short stories (bc I neglect them often even though I enjoy them)
3. Read more translated novels (inspired by @ab_reads since she made a whole post about this, check it out if you wanna know more!)
.
.
I’m going to keep it to these three because I don’t want to overwhelm myself with goals😂
.
.
My number one personal goal for this year is to gain confidence because I have MAJOR imposter syndrome. It’s time to start thinking I’m good enough at the things I do!
.
.
If you’ve made it this far, what are your goals (reading or personal) for this year? Also, what books are you looking forward to reading in January?

First book on the board for 2020. I wish I had known how good and feminist and weird these stories would be. What a collection! They were the perfect companion as I cried and despaired about what we colonists have done to our planet and how dystopian my country looks and feels. I’ll despair for another day but then get back to action. #saltslow #juliaarmfield

▫️REVIEW▫️

PLOT: I finished up SALT SLOW by Julia Armfield, which also happens to be a @belletrist pick. This is another speculative fiction short story collection--if you've followed me for a while, you might know I'm partial to short stories (especially the eerie, creepy, and/or feminist kind). These stories range from a girl morphing into a creature to a couple looking back on their relationship as they float in a Water World-esque post-apocalyptic nightmare. There's a girl with a wolf as a stepsister, an insomnia epidemic where people become disembodied from (and haunted by) their own sleep spirits, and a long awaited boyfriend who slowly becomes inanimate.~

HIGHLIGHTS: There was not a single story that was out of place in this collection. I did prefer some more than others, my favorites being The Great Awake and Granite.~

TAKEAWAYS: I almost always compare this genre of short stories to Carmen Maria Machado, but that's only because she is the standard to which all should be compared. And this one is not a bad comparison. I also recommend THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE by Mariana Enriquez and ALL THE NAMES THEY USED FOR GOD by Anjali Sachdeva if you're looking for these borderline horror/sci-fi stories written by women. •

#LiteraryRepost💥💥💥 @lottelikesbooks MY FAVOURITE BOOKS OF 2019 //
.
2019 was a very good reading year overall. I enjoyed most of the 89 (soon to be 90) books that I read this year (with a few not-so-great or disappointing reads in between, I’ll share those in my story later today) — and then there were the books I LOVED. These are the books that stood out to me the most, that moved and shocked me, that kept me intrigued the whole time I was reading them and that I kept thinking about long after I had finished. I’ve raved about most of these elsewhere on my account, so without further ado and much explanation, here are my favourite books of the year —

During the Holidays it’s always hard for me to focus on reading so this year I chose a collection of short stories from Julia Armfield - Salt Slow. I had read a lot of interesting reviews on line and I kind of expected it to be different... but I didn’t expect it to be so dark. And I really really like it. I’m already half way through and my favorite stories so far have been ‘Mantis’ and ‘The Collectibles’.🖤🖤🖤

Merry Christmas!🎄❤️
.
.
I hope everyone had a wonderful day, whether it is a holiday for you or just another Wednesday. I did not get any books for Christmas (I got gift cards which I appreciate so so much), but I did want to give a quick shout out to the amazing @darciahelle for gifting me this ARC of Salt Slow! She sent this short story collection to me quite a bit ago and I’ve been meaning to post about it ever since! It’s also my first arc so it feels even more special! Thank you so much, Darcia!! I’m so grateful ❤️ Swipe to see the bookmark she sent me, too, that showcases two of her own books!
.
.
Have you read any of these (Darcia’s books or any/all of the stories in Salt Slow)? I cannot wait to read all of the above!

Nothing like getting a hot chider (chi and cider) to make a chilly day seem balmy☕️

SALT SLOW is a series of short stories about the experience of being a woman. The following are brief mentions of my favorite short stories within the collection. The first—Mantis—was about a teenage girl in Catholic school who suffers from a condition that causes her skin, hair and teeth to shed and fall out. But in the end, it’s this condition that saves her from a much worse fate. The second short story—The Great Awake—is about sleep manifesting into a separate creature that just follows you around so you no longer have to sleep. It’s a thing that only happens in the cities and not to everyone. It really forces you to question what you would do with the extra time. The fourth short story—Formally Feral—was about a girl who is brought up as the sister to a wolf and the right bond they form becoming feral in the process.

The fourth short story—Formally Feral—was about a girl who is brought up as the sister to a wolf and the right bond they form becoming feral in the process.

Senior Designer for @campbell_books @lucybelle93 went so perfectly with Julia Armfield's Salt Slow that we just HAD to grab a pic with them both!⠀

ABOUT SALT SLOW⠀
In her brilliantly inventive and haunting debut collection of stories, Julia Armfield explores bodies and the bodily, mapping the skin and bones of her characters through their experiences of isolation, obsession, love and revenge.⠀

Blurring the mythic and the gothic with the everyday, Salt Slow considers characters in motion – turning away, turning back or simply turning into something new entirely.

salt slow

the book that keeps giving after you finish the last page.
i find myself thinking about it when i’m driving, i slip it into conversation and i reread my musings i have written within the pages where julia’s words have invoked my own memories; my turning away, turning back and turning into something new.

I got so many new books recently that I’m very, very excited to read and share with you! ☺️ I feel like this book haul is especially true to my usual reading tastes: There‘s some Gothic historical fiction and quite a bit of feminist fiction and non-fiction in this stack. Plus, most of these books center on women’s experiences, their relationships with their bodies and with each other. Have you read any of these books? And did you enjoy them? 💛✨

MY FAVOURITE BOOKS OF 2019 //
I’ve raved about most of these elsewhere on my account, so without further ado and much explanation, here are my favourite books of the year —
.
✨ MY TOP 10 ✨
📖 #InstructionsforaHeatwave by Maggie O‘Farrell
📖 #Bunny by Mona Awad
📖 #SaltSlow by Julia Armfield
📖 #ThereThere by Tommy Orange
📖 #NotestoSelf by Emilie Pine
📖 #NinthHouse by Leigh Bardugo
📖 #GhostWall by Sarah Moss
📖 #ConversationswithFriends by Sally Rooney
📖 #ThingsWeSayintheDark by Kirsty Logan
📖 #Kurt von Sarah Kuttner (not pictured)
.
✨ Honourable mentions ✨
📖 #ALaddertotheSky by John Boyne
📖 #ConvenienceStoreWoman by Sayaka Murata
📖 #ErsteHilfe von Mariana Leky
📖 #MyCousinRachel by Daphne du Maurier (not pictured)
.
Have you read any of the books from my list or are you planning to? ☺️

📚 Reading Wrap-Up & Reviews // Books 55–60 of 2019

📖 #ExitWest by #MohsinHamid – 4.25/5 ⭐️
A highly allegoric love story that deals with the notion of seeking refuge – and finding it in another country or in another person – in an inventive and beautiful way. It was gorgeously written and there’s an elegance to the writing that often stands in contrast to the harsh things that are described. I loved reading this, but was left feeling a little unsatisfied by the ending.

📖 #TillyandtheBookwanderers by #AnnaJames – 4/5 ⭐️
A cozy middle-grade novel that celebrates the wonders and unadulterated joy of reading in the most charming and fun way. I loved learning about the world of bookwandering and accompanying Tilly and Oscar on their bookish adventures and will definitely listen to the second book in this series when it comes out.

📖 #TheTurnoftheKey by #RuthWare – 3.5/5 ⭐️
Another solid suspenseful thriller by Ruth Ware! My favourite parts were the creepy descriptions of the house, the jarring juxtaposition of the classic Victorian home and the new technological smart home and the sense of dread and surveillance that was created this way. The twists and turns this book took were fun, if not entirely surprising, and I had a good and wonderfully creepy time reading this. Would recommend!

📖 #TheVanishing by #SophiaTobin – 1.5/5 ⭐️
Definitely one of the worst books I‘ve read so far this year. It’s just. so. messy. This book incorporates quite a few elements of historical Gothic fiction I love (it‘s set in a gloomy remote mansion after all) and starts out fairly well, but then becomes a chaotic jumble of overly dramatic twists and characters whose actions didn't make any sense. The writing was pretty good throughout, but in the end, I felt like the book became a caricature of itself with its convoluted storyline and frustrating ending.

📖 See my previous post for my review of #SaltSlow by #JuliaArmfield (which I absolutely loved and would highly recommend).

Have you read any of these books? Or are you planning to? 💛☺️

#BookReview of one of the best short story collections I've ever read: #SaltSlow by #JuliaArmfield — 4.5/5 ⭐️
.
Julia Armfield writes brilliantly eerie, evocative and inventive stories about women‘s bodies and experiences. In these stories, an entire city becomes insomniac as sleep grows into a physical entity that escapes its owners, an all-female rock band’s army of loyal teenage fans develop an uncontrollable power and in a post-apocalyptic world of water, dark things lurk in the deep. In Armfield‘s imagination, mundane, everyday things gain a dark and thoroughly "other" quality, while sinister scenarios become horrifyingly ordinary.
.
There wasn't a single bad story in this collection, only one I didn't jell with as much (»Smack«) but still liked overall. There were, however, quite a few stories that stood out especially and that are among the best pieces of dark, twisted short fiction I‘ve ever had the pleasure of reading.
.
My absolute favourites were »The Collectables« (build-a-boyfriend gone awry), »Formerly Feral« (the best twist on "Peter and the Wolf" imaginable), »Stop your women's ears with wax« (never underestimate the power of teenage fanaticism) and the title story, »salt slow« (post-apocalyptic bleakness meets the primal horror of pregnancy – I would not recommend reading this while actually pregnant).
.
All of these stories were entirely memorable in their own way and will likely stay with me for a very long time. I'm absolutely hooked on Julia Armfield's writing now and will definitely be reading whatever she comes out with next.
.

🍂 Thirteen books to read this spooky season 🍂

I‘ve done my fair share of autumnal book recommendations in the past (have a look at the very creatively titled hashtag #LottesAutumnPosts if you’re interested in more of those), so this stack is comprised of books I’ve read in the past year that I think make for perfect October reads. Most of these aren‘t typical horror (with the exception of Kirsty Logan and Mona Awad maybe), but are more on the gothic and atmospheric side. Lots of them feature remote rural locations and haunted houses, some are set in the Victorian era and some are a bit magical – all the good things. ☺️✨
What (spooky) books are you planning on reading this month? Do you know of any similar books that you‘d like to recommend?

5 ⭐️ READS
📖 #TheMonstersWeDeserve by Marcus Sedgwick
📖 #GhostWall by Sarah Moss
📖 #SaltSlow by Julia Armfield
📖 #TheWonder by Emma Donoghue

4 ⭐️ READS
📖 #ThingsWeSayintheDark by Kirsty Logan
📖 #TheBirdsandotherStories by Daphne du Maurier
📖 #Perfume by Patrick Süskind
📖 #Fingersmith & #Affinity by Sarah Waters
📖 #TheWomaninBlack by Susan Hill
📖 #TheTurnoftheKey by Ruth Ware
📖 #Melmoth by Sarah Perry

📖 #Bunny by Mona Awad (no rating for this one as I’m currently reading it but it’s already giving me perfectly creepy vibes, so I wanted to include it anyway!)

It was about time — for another round of favourite covers. 💛✨ These are all books I bought in 2019 and most of them are fairly recent releases as well. Which book would you award the title "Best Cover of the Year" (so far)? Doesn’t have to be on this list 😄 #LottesFavouriteCovers

📖 READ: #ConversationswithFriends, #TheConfessionsofFrannieLangton, #SupperClub, #Looker, #WilderGirls & #SaltSlow.

📖 TBR: #TheNewMe, #AlltheBadApples, #Insomnia, #TheWickedCometh, #BitterOrange & #BodiesofLight.

Thank you SO MUCH @picadorbooks for gifting me what had become one of my top books of the year and an all time favourite short story collection! If the perfect short story collection exists, then it is Salt Slow by Julia Armfield, and I’m planning on writing her a letter to ask her to write me a short story every day so I never run out of ones to read - is that selfish? 🤔
.
I was in love from the first story, a raw and painful portrayal of the relationship between young girls and their bodies, the competitiveness that they instinctively feel while going through puberty, which then takes a sinister turn, setting the tone for the rest of the stories.
.
I wouldn’t say there is a single weak story within this collection. The Great Awake, an eerie yet tender story where people’s ‘Sleeps’ have left their bodies and now follow them around like pets, Collectables, delightfully gruesome and sharp, Salt Slow, a haunting end-of-the-world story with all things tentacles beneath the sea, Cassandra After, a woman coming to terms with her sexuality, made more difficult when her girlfriend dies then comes back. I’m not sure I could pick a favourite - maybe Formerly Feral?! But all were truly excellent, Armfield’s imagination is a thing of many creepy wonders.
.
The extraordinary and ghoulish is told in a matter of fact way, lending a ring of authenticity which is in itself unsettling. Within the stories she explores gender roles, sexuality, societal pressures, growing up, falling in love, but all with that magical realism touch that takes it to the next level and leaves you wondering what’s simmering beneath the skin...
.
If you love dark, viscous, oozing, visceral stories then you must have Armfield on your radar! I will be waiting with bated breath for more by her!
