Something not a lot of people know about me is that even before I blew out my ACL I have had A LOT of musculoskeletal issues which include: fallen arches, tendonitis in my ankles, several bouts of shin splints, patellar tendonitis, scoliosis, sciatica, hip weakness, shoulder bursitis, shoulder tendonitis, pinched cervical nerve, chronic displaced ribs, hamstring pull, LCL and MCL sprains, and of course an ACL tear.
Thankfully, my mom knew of a good physical therapist so when all this started with the pain in my feet and ankles, I started receiving treatment and I have been going to the same PT for about ten years now as these problems develop and are subsequently fixed through directed physical therapy, strengthening exercises, chiropractic visits, and conventional medicine.
A lot of people in the past have discredited physical therapists and chiropractors because what they do is considered "alternative medicine", but if I only relied on conventional western medicine I would not be the same person. Recently, more and more traditional doctors are referring patients to alternative routes of treatment, including gynecological patients.
Many don't know that there are alternative treatment options for sexual dysfunction outside of medicinal treatments. Women in particular can benefit from this type of physical therapy because many of the causes of sexual dysfunction in women, aside from psychological and hormonal causes, can actually be traced back to muscular trouble including: vaginismus and vulvodynia.
It's important not to discount the use of alternative treatments when it comes to healing your body and to know that there are options available to treat even socially stigmatized issues. Chances are, someone you know has a type of sexual dysfunction that could be treated with appropriate therapies, or maybe it's something you, yourself, should be looking into.

This was a decent run today! 💪
I felt prepared, despite my very "healthy" birthday dinner last night. 😂
My legs are definitely feeling it though, so I'm going to make sure to stretch before and after. When I run on the treadmill I am able to sprint the last bit going around 4:16/km! However, I generally stop the treadmill and don't walk it off after. I may need to start doing that too. The abrupt stop seems to make my legs cramp.

The core has 2 roles in running: to provide a stable base of support while we move the extremities, and to resist trunk rotation. The more you rotate through the trunk the less efficient your running can be. A stable trunk helps transfer force and stops ‘energy leaks’ through the kinetic chain. Therefore, the more you rotate through the trunk the less efficient your running can be. These exercises help to ‘resist’ rotation (and lateral flexion).

A sweaty, hard run that I shouldn't have done. Next time someone tells me to rest a few weeks, I'll make sure I listen rather than wait 4 days. 🙄😢 15 whole seconds with my mad heart rate, probably around the time I thought I was going to throw up. 😂 I think it's time for some bike rides and some long walks for a couple of weeks. I wanted to change my @raceatyourpace challenge to 25 miles and I'm sitting on 20.4m running... Could I do the extra miles walking or would that not count?

So, today, I finally did it: I got the stupid right side done. I tried.to just focus on that side as my left seems to be fine.
Now I just need to condition my slow brain to initiate smooth transitions. Hopefully,.that'll happen this year!😂
I did a few really nice ones, changing sides ... when I didn't film,.of course,.so no proof--you'll have to take my work for it. ✌🙌
Sadly,.although I felt on fire, so did my shins. That's the rest of.thr week off again. So frustrating.

We are reviewing our runner's knee series, and this time we look at the basic things you can do at home to help move your progress along. Regardless of any and all care we provide here in the office, if you are not regularly (and I mean frequently, more than once per day) working on your home care, your progress will be slow.

Like training, rehab from an injury takes time, effort, and growth. Each day we are trying to move the needle forward, and that is impossible if you are sitting on your butt waiting for your next appointment so we can do it for you. There is just so much lost time there.

These movements are basic, but it will get you started. Shoot for performing 10-15 reps of each of these exercises, 3 times per day.

MULTIPLANAR DORSIFLEXION LUNGE⁣

If you are having prolonged stiffness after an ankle injury, then this is the drill for you!⁣

It is generally accepted that the ankle is a hinge type synovial joint, primarily moving through plantar flexion (0-50 degrees) and dorsiflexion (0-20 degrees). But when we look at the mechanics of the ankle and realize that during running we have lower leg & foot mechanics to consider, the movement becomes bigger than just a basic hinge type movement.⁣

In this drill, we take our normal lunge position, but by directing our knee inside and outside of the dowel rod as shown, we are able to incorporate a little lateral movement at the lower leg/ankle/foot complex, foot inversion and eversion movements, and treat the area like the dynamic structure that it is when running.⁣

Perform 10-15 each direction, on both sides, for 2-3 sets. While I move fast in this video, take your time.⁣

🔑 Shin splints a.k.a medial tibial stress syndrome is a condition characterized by shin pain related to muscular fatigue and inflammation. Medial tibial stress syndrome has been correlated to a couple risk factors:⁣

⁣✅ The first exercise is a simple bridge with heel raise. This alteration of a bridge allows for posterior chain activation similar to that of running while focusing on soleus strengthening. The foam is a nice addition has it alters the amount of Range of motion that the ankle moves through. 🏋️‍♂️⁣

⁣ ✅ The second exercise is a wall squat with a heel raise. This is progression from the bridge due to increased weight bearing on legs. Additionally, the 🔑 key cue here is to insure the client is not pushing down into the foam with toe flexors. ⁣

⁣✅ The third exercise is a quarter squat with heel raise. This exercises increases the amount of difficulty because there are more degrees of freedom. This is a great exercise to test the endurance of the soleus in a more functional position ⛹️‍♀️. Once again, the 🔑 key cue here is to insure the client is not pushing down into the foam with toe flexors.⁣

⁣ ✅ The forth exercise is foot doming. This exercises is to supposed to work on the foot intrinsic. 🔑 Shin splints a.k.a medial tibial stress syndrome is a condition characterized by shin pain related to muscular fatigue and inflammation. Medial tibial stress syndrome has been correlated to a couple risk factors:⁣

⁣1)Overuse of toe flexor muscles⁣
⁣⁣
⁣2)Poor soleus endurance⁣
⁣⁣
⁣3)Medial arch collapse 🏃‍♀️💨 Possible causes of shin splint pain; 1) Overuse of toe flexors during push off during running can lead to fatigue related pain and muscle wear and tear🏃‍♂️ 2) Soleus is one third of the key calf muscles needed during push off while running ⛹️‍♂️🏌️‍♂️ ⁣

⁣⁣
⁣✅ The first exercise is a simple bridge with heel raise. This alteration of a bridge allows for posterior chain activation similar to that of running while focusing on soleus strengthening. The foam is a nice addition has it alters the amount of Range of motion that the ankle moves through. 🏋️‍♂️⁣

⁣⁣
⁣ ✅ The second exercise is a wall squat with a heel raise. This is progression from the bridge due to increased weight bearing on legs. Additionally, the 🔑 key cue here is to insure the client is not pushing down into the foam with toe flexors. ⁣

⁣✅ The third exercise is a quarter squat with heel raise. This exercises increases the amount of difficulty because there are more degrees of freedom. This is a great exercise to test the endurance of the soleus in a more functional position ⛹️‍♀️. Once again, the 🔑 key cue here is to insure the client is not pushing down into the foam with toe flexors.⁣

⁣ ✅ The forth exercise is foot doming. This exercises is to supposed to work on the foot intrinsic. Shin splints is the term given for lower leg pain that occurs below the knee either on the front outside part of the leg (anterior shin splints) or the inside of the leg (medial shin splints). They are the bane of many athletes, runners, tennis players, even dancers. They often plague beginning runners who do not build their mileage gradually or seasoned runners who abruptly change their workout regimen. Flat feet or abnormally rigid arches and worn out or improper foot wear during exercise could also contribute to this debilitating injury. The end result is inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue around the tibia.

For some athletes Shin splints can be quite a stubborn injury to treat, as many conventional methods are limited in their approach to treatment. Cupping and Acupuncture is amazing at reducing pain and inflammation associated with Shin splints. By reducing inflammation, the body’s healing response will improve and the athlete can return to activity sooner.

Arm day. After a much needed spa and rest day yesterday, back to the early morning gym sesh this morning, and what better way to bring the energy than to wear my finisher’s tee?

Rocking Wall Lunge Drill⁣

By now, you should be realizing by our focus on ankle mobility and stability, it is important. I would call it a big 3 for runners to prevent injury. So, here is another great exercise to improve ankle dorsiflexion that can be performed anywhere, and brings in a more dynamic approach.⁣

Eventually, you have to move from static stretches and exercises, to more dynamic movements that put you in a more natural running position.⁣

▫️Rocking Wall Lunge Drill▫️⁣
▪️ Start in a half Lunge position with the restricted ankle forward.⁣
▪️ Move your foot back from the wall to allow for the knee to drive forward without hitting.⁣
▪️ Begin rocking back and forth, increasing your range each time, until you can go no further without lifting the 🦶🏾 off the ground.⁣
▪️ Perform 10-15 full range rocking movements.⁣

An overstride is characterised by landing too far in front of your centre of mass. 👣👣👣 While the foot strike position (mid,heel or forefoot) matters less, overstriding is definitely something you want to rein in. 👣👣👣 The easiest way to check is by looking at the angle of your tibia on initial contact. Is it vertical? If not, it’s likely you are overstriding, putting excessive load through the knee, hip and shin. 👣👣👣 Why a vertical tibia?
When the tibia is vertical, the knee will be slightly more bent or flexed. A flexed knee is much better at absorbing shock by using our strong quadriceps, glutes and calf. 👣👣👣
The better we are at absorbing the ground reaction force with our muscles, the less load that goes onto our joints and skeleton/bone. 👣👣👣

Remember to stretch your calves, part of self care for your run. 🔹Start with one foot on curb and one on ground
✅Bend knee of ground leg and do a few dynamic, then hold stretch 🔹Note this is how you want foot to be on ground as it prepares to pull, using muscle elasticity ✅Progress to traditional calf stretch, hang foot off curb and hold, enjoy the benefits in your run

I'm not the best distance runner by any means but I've started making sure I run at least a couple of days every week and I'm slowly getting better. I suffered with shin splints pretty badly for years and it's still an issue every now and then, but until recently I could barely manage 3.5km without being in severe pain. In a couple of weeks I'll probably be able to double that distance.
I tried all the stretches and foam rolling to stop shin splints (admittedly not enough as I should've) but I found what worked for me the most was some minor technique changes, slowing my pace just slightly and stopping as soon as I felt any pain.
I love running, partly because I don't always love running ha!
I sometimes sit in the house putting my running shoes on thinking "I really can not be arsed". But then you step outside and just tell yourself to keep going until you reach a certain point. It's even better when it's raining, or it's stupidly hot or really cold. If you just get out and do it you're already winning that first little battle. 99% of the time you come back feeling a little better, even if you just do a couple of miles.

♠️ What am I doing?
.
I'm using a #BOSU ball to train control through my ankle and into my foot. The muscles responsible for controlling movement from your leg to your toes see kind of a big deal; they're your #archsupport muscles, they're associated with #shinsplint pain and they're incredibly important to stabilizing and absorbing shock through the lower extremity.
.
♦️ Why am I doing this?
.
Because lately I've been experiencing a lot of pain in my medial arch of my right foot, along with posterior shin splint pain.This could be related to the #edsinjuries or my #tibialfracture , or just my history of joint trauma... Who knows.
What I DO know is that this exercise seems to be a meaningful one to address those symptoms for me.
.
More generally speaking we could say that this exercise challenges control through the anterior, lateral and #posteriortibialgroup , but realistically the benefits go beyond simple mechanical stresses on the tissues.
.
♥️ What's my focus?
.
I'm trying to move as smoothly as I can from one direction to the next. Trying to draw a straight line against the BOSU is a really simple drill in concept, but very difficult in practice.
My goal here in each repetition is a consistently smooth and controlled movement. I'm aiming to build better awareness of, and reaction to, movement through my foot and ankle.

Well, no #medalmonday for this guy. I ended up not running the Patapsco Trailfest Half I had signed up for months ago. I got up at 330am Sunday morning and went through my normal race day routines and a little before 6am I called it. I kept telling myself I could just wrap my shins really good and just go and take it super slow and just have fun and take pics and make a cool insta story and whatnot. But, in the end it came down to the total distance of 14.6 miles and the technical portion of it all that really weighed heavily on my mind. It was a huge bummer to quit on a commitment I made with myself but in the end it's better to make the decision yourself than have your body make it for you. So, on to a few weeks of rest. Get my lazy butt back into the gym and riding this bike. I tried biking 14.6 miles yesterday but only made it to a little over 11 due to my arse getting really sore. Gotta build up the tolerance 😂. I also might look into seeing if I can't weasle my way into a gym for a few weeks with a pool to swim. Any kind of low impact cardio, I'm coming for ya!! Big lessons learned over the last few weeks that I'll use to come back stronger. 💪😎
