Nara Deer Park, Japan

Nara deer are a national treasure and they know it! Wild and free but completely safe and unafraid. If only we could all have the same 🦌

Hollow Ponds, Epping Forest

Was magical to see this sunset as well as the wildlife.

Nice to get a break from central London and see nature.

Good to get away alone.

Actually came out better on my phone than DSLR 🤦‍♂️

Palisades State Park

Last of my photos from last weekend. Until I find some random one I missed... @d_mmann has been telling me for the past couple years to stop by Palisades State Park in South Dakota on my trips west. I made the last minute decision before I left for the Badlands to finally check it out. What a great little park with some beautiful views!

Truly, the best advice I think I can give anybody is do a solo trip(s)/exploring. It's good for the soul and really clears the mind. You don't have anybody else's agenda, wants, or needs to tend to. Even if it's for a weekend, find some place and go. Do it.

Badlands National Park

M A K O S I C A

Extreme temps, lack of water, and exposed terrrain helped give this name to the land by the Lakota. French-Canadian trappers and explorers gave it a similar one, ""Les mauvais terres pour traverse." Both meaning land bad or bad land to travel.

These photos, for me, sums up pretty much why I love this area. A completely otherworldly place to get lost in. As you drive west the Badlands Scenic Loop, to your right is flat prairie, so similar to the majority of South Dakota. To your left, the landscape drops off to spires, striped pinnacles, ragged edged formations. It's like, for a brief moment, you've left Planet Earth for something else.

Badlands National Park

The seemingly never-ending @badlandsnps photos continue 😬 This time a little bit of the Castle Trail that I had never hiked before. It's the longest trail in the park at roughly 10 miles. I didn't get too far into the trail before I decided to turn back around though. The stars didn't align between how hot it was out on the prairie and how itchy my legs got from the tall grasses.

As I was wandering, there was a tour helicopter flying overhead the whole time. It made me think of a documentary featuring the Grand Canyon I watched awhile back. They were discussing some of the issues the park faces. One of the things was the helicopters doing tours scaring animals away from the area. There are Native American tribes that hunt there as their food source.

While I don't know that the Badlands face those same issues as the Grand Canyon, I still found the helicopters to be incredibly distracting. It felt like it took away from the experience of hiking the trail in silence and solitude. I don't know that it's a way I'll ever choose to view a National Park... #awanderingunicorn @blackhillsbadlands

Badlands National Park

A coworker told me awhile ago that I like to be anonymous in a crowd. That really struck me and since then I've found it to be incredibly true. As shy and introverted as I am, I have loved going to new places (and back to favorite places) where nobody knows me and I don't know anyone. I enjoy the few conversations I have along the way of small talk, travel stories, and laughs. These are the best moments that create the best stories and memories. 👉 Traveling alone is just something you have to do. It's such a good thing for your self-esteem and confidence. You will be a whole new person. - Isa Lindberg

Five years ago, three even, I would never have thought I'd be traveling places by myself. I'm a fairly independent gal, but I wouldn't have had the confidence to do it. I'm glad I stepped out of that comfort zone last year, got into my car, and hit the road. What's even more, though, is the confidence I've gained with every trip.

Photo overload for the next couple days - sorry, not sorry 😁

Last week, I'm pretty sure it was @shaylashayjohnson who asked me what my favorite trail has been that I've hiked. At the time I didn't have an answer, but doing the Notch Trail on Sunday evening made it a clear winner 🏆 I had done it two years ago and I was excited to go again. Not sure how I could forget that trail and how much I enjoy it. I was chatting with a guy earlier that day who was at the @badlandsnps for his first time. His comment was how otherworldly it felt, similar to places like Moab (haven't been...but can't wait to go sometime). I told him he had to do Notch Trail. I hope he got the chance.

Once you climb the ladder, you reach the best part of the trail that weaves around into the formations. That's where I like to pretend I'm on the moon 🌚 The trail is only a mile long, but at the end (photos 9-10) you're rewarded with an excellent view of the Cliff Shelf Overlook Trail, Cedar Pass Lodge and Campgrounds, and east side of the park. Just amazing. It's humbling and makes you feel small in this vast world. That feeling, is one of my favorites ever. It makes all the problems and weight I'm feeling seem a bit lighter.

I even saw a guy napping at the overlook area. He found a pretty good spot, I wish I had thought of it 😂

Norbeck Pass

Sunday night's stunning sunset from Norbeck Pass that I mentioned in last night's post.

I almost missed it because I was taking my sweet time enjoying a frybread taco at Cedar Pass Lodge.

Yellow Mounds Overlook

As I drove by myself the 7ish hours to my favorite spot for the long weekend, I started to wonder if I should really go. Even though I had reserved my camp spot a month ago, it still seemed unplanned and too spontaneous. I kept going anyways hushing the doubt rolling around 🚗 And it turned out to be exactly the weekend I needed.

A week and a half ago, I finally came to terms that I've been off for the better part of the year. Since then, all I've wanted to do is cry. (I don't cry.) Sitting in the car, driving across South Dakota, I realized that there's a good chance it's been depression bubbly back up towards the surface. It's come out in the form of me being an irritable asshole about everything and to just about everybody. (Sorry if you've taken the brunt of it...😬) I'm truthfully still not entirely sure of the cause(s), but I have some ideas.

Last night as I was watching the sunset (post pictures of that later), I spoke to whatever gods are out there in the Universe that I wanted to let go of all the bitterness, irritability, sadness, and crabby that's been coursing through me. The winds picked up as if to say, "Let me take that from you." I'm not a religious or spiritual person, but I took it as a good sign that the rest of the year will be the opposite of what it has been. All I could say to myself after that was, "How effing lucky am I - for so many reasons." 😊

And then spent the better part of the night anxious and awake thinking those same winds were about to take out my tent with me in it 🤷🏻‍♀️ Photo at the Yellow Mounds Overlook in @badlandsnps. (Best spot in the park in my opinion.) More photos from this mini #awanderingunicorn adventure to come.

Alnwick, Northumberland

This is me on my first ever completely solo holiday. It wasn't a trip for work or because of a social occasion. This was a getaway just to get away. A holiday just for me. And it was wonderful. Two nights in Northumberland exploring the beautiful coast and falling in love with the sandy beaches and quaint little towns. Two nights to switch off and take some much needed time away. It was the best 💚 I am so grateful for the experience and so proud of myself for doing it alone. This is the only photo I have of myself from the trip, taken outside a stunning tower in the middle of a woodland. Camera propped up on a railing, I really wanted to capture the moment. Just after this, it started raining heavily and I walked back to town singing the whole way. This is a reminder to everyone to find joy in the every day and create your own happiness. Experience as much as you can and don’t let not having someone to do it with hold you back 🍄 More about my little trip on my blog, link in the usual 🌸

⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
By “random”, I mean: patiently waiting for a stranger that I calculated to be safe (low risk factor of them running off with my professional camera or dropping it) and that could potentially frame the picture similar to what I showed them.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
This is how I got this shot without a friend or photographer with me. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
To be fair, it’s a gamble, some people are going to nail it and most won’t (cue in: people taking a picture of mostly the floor, accidentally including their finger in the frame, etc 😆)— luckily this girl did! ☺️ #thanksgirl ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Tip 1: take the picture further away so you have the option to crop and readjust the frame since people tend to shoot crooked or differently than you⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Tip 2: return the favour and ask if they would like a picture too ☺️ Mostly likely, they’ll want one if they’re traveling alone or have only been taking pictures of each other and would like a group picture. Don’t let #soloexploring stop you from snapping the memories you want and return the love 💕
