PHYSIO

When khadeejah came out of ICU. She was limp. She couldn't do a lot. She couldn't move her head much. She couldn't move her legs. She got movement in her arms but they were without intent. She certainly could not grasp or reach. Her hands always clenched in a fist.

Fast forward 3 months post ICU I had to push for a physio assessment. She finally got one but she was written off. She got no follow up appointments or any regular physio.

I had to push to get her a 6 week block in a group toddler session. (See my stories from today)

And look at her, She was sitting with support, I couldn't believe my eyes allahummah barrick alayha I actually cried I was so emotional!

It's taken me 8 months to get her this physio session today, And in 4 weeks she will be entitled to none because of my local area having funding issues. My precious girl won't be able to get to her full potential, But someone 20 minutes away can all because of postcode lottery.

I wish I could do more for her. As a mother all I want is to help her to get enjoyment out of life, And when you know your child is on the palliative pathway that's all you really want.

Khadeejah NEEDS physio. Only time will tell if she'll get it

I'm so excited because today is the launch day for Scentsy coming to the Netherlands! 🇳🇱💜.
🥳.
Family came from Arnhem and it's my way of coming back! 🥰.
Scentsy stands by their words of, "Bring Value To The World!". 🤩.
My name is Cassandra Abbenbroek and I have been a Certified Scentsy Consultant since April 2018 and I can't tell you the many positives I have experienced.
Scentsy products was a game changer for me when I tried them. I love the people I am meeting, feeling like my unique style matters and part of a team that truly cares. Scentsy let's you go at your own pace because they understand that our lives are so busy.
Love that it's super easy and no stings attached. ☺️.
You will fall in love! I promise! 💜.

This morning, I asked God where I needed to sit. What place do I need to rest in - mentally, emotionally, spiritually? Do I wait in expectancy or move with no expectations, just faith in whatever will be, will be?

I know I can’t be the only one. I constantly ask myself, am I doing this right??? THIS. All of this. This life. These babies. My business. My walk. I get so wrapped up in “doing it right,” I sometimes pause and don’t do anything. Too scared to move. Will I mess up? Will I miss out? Will I move too soon? Have I not done enough?!?! What’s the best choice?
Gosh y’all. It’s exhausting.
And I don’t have all the answers, but I tend to think this confusion is a tool of the enemy. If he can distract us, if he can confuse us, but most importantly, he LOVES for us to live in fear. Fear is probably the most paralyzing.
Someone wise encouraged me months ago to just focus on the next step. Not the one far off in the future, but the next step, right in front of me. That’s FAITH. One step, not sure where it will lead. “Come sit with me Maggie.”

I remembered when we were praying for what we have today. 🧩
🧩
🧩
Headed home from our best trip to Great Wolf Lodge so far. Y’all know that I’m not all stressed about Finley being “normal” but it is exciting to see her being able to do “normal” fun activities. Unless someone knew
what her “flapping” actually meant or noticed her OCD route (climb up to the slide while counting the 6 steps, slide down, sit on water ski and shoot water, run back to the slide, jump in and repeat) they would have probably thought she was a typical child. She even did a good job taking turns and waiting patiently. (Well except for one particularly slow little girl she thought needed an extra push with her foot—oops 🤦‍♀️). And the best part....she did interact with her brother part of the time!! 🧩
🧩
🧩
I remember when we were praying for what we have today. So I know that you have things too. Things you are praying for your kids. Things you are praying for your family. For your spouse or your job. For your health. For your finances. For your church. For your community. For our struggling country. And no matter what that is, I want to encourage you NOT TO GIVE UP! There was a time when I really struggled with feeling like my prayers were pointless. I struggled to believe that they really made a difference. But then I discovered a beautiful little parable in Luke 18. The parable of the unjust judge and the persistent woman. Go read that, and then try to tell me your prayers don’t make a difference. News flash: They DO!

He has a big team: a behavioral therapist, music therapist, physical therapist, speech therapists, occupational therapist, school teacher, speech teach through the school, and a crisis prevention person that comes with the teacher. All of these people are in our home, every week. They all (for the most park) work for separate companies, but they all work to make Harlans life a little easier. The most difficult thing is to get everyone on the same page. Right now, his physical, speech, music and Behavioal therapists all have a plan they would like to implement. But we are in a standstill because the school district will not get on board.
There is the obvious side of special needs parenting: like handling seizures and meltdowns. But, there is this part that goes on behind the scene that looks like this: emails, phone calls, schedule changes, more emails and phone calls, filling out paperwork, calling insurance companies, organizing medical bills, meetings, more talking about plans and pushing so hard for your kiddo. It’s the hardest part. It’s the part that can easily eat up 3-4 hours a day.
Right now, I’m listening to Harlan work hard with his teacher. He’s verbalizing that he needs a timer and another break. That progress is HUGE. He knows what he needs and he can SAY IT 🙌🏼 And now I get to go push for the school to actually listen to him....

“Welcome to Holland” 💐 I was sent this poem shortly after Oliver’s diagnosis by another special needs mum 💖 No one ever thinks about going to “Holland!” No one wants to think about complications or things going wrong. We don’t talk about it. I know when I opened my Birth to Five book all those years ago, I didn’t want to read the section “Children with additional needs”... The phrase “Sometimes things are not alright”... surely that wasn’t something I needed to read.... right?? 🤷🏼‍♀️ When you’re sat in the doctors office and given your child’s diagnosis, your world completely crumbles 😢 I wish the doctor had handed me this poem 10 years ago, along with Oliver’s Cerebral Palsy Diagnosis. I wish that in the midst of the overwhelming feeling of grief and the fear of the unknown, that she could have handed me this little bit of hope 💚 I wish she had told me that yeah, it’s going to be bloody tough, but you’ll find strength you didn’t know you had.. you’ll get through it and you will learn to see and appreciate the beauty in all the small things along the way!!! 💪🏻 🙌🏻 People look at families of children with special/additional needs and feel a sense of pity... so many times people will say to us.. “Awk I’m so sorry!” .. Don’t be sorry.. Dont feel pity 💚 What I’m trying to say is exactly what Emily Perl Kingsley so beautifully wrote 💐 Holland truly is a beautiful place. It’s not Italy... It’s a different place; but it’s not a horrible place!! Do I still dream of Italy? Of course I do!! I’d never even thought about visiting Holland before, let alone living here... but yet here I am and here is where I’ll stay 💐 Holland really is a special place.. and sure who doesn’t love tulips 🌷 If you have just arrived in Holland with your family, I hope you learn to find the beautiful things it has to offer too! #welcometoholland #holland #hollandtourguide #specialneeds #specialneedskids #specialneedsfamily #specialneedsmom #specialneedsparenting #additionalneeds #disability

Research consistently shows that at least 1 in 10 children will experience some type of sexual abuse by the time they turn 18, and children with developmental disabilities are three times more likely to be victimized. Factors like limited verbal communication and heavy reliance on others for basic needs put children with disabilities at a higher risk of sexual abuse, and understanding the factors that increase risk is the first step in keeping them safe.

We were grateful to come across the work of Lindsey Strickland at @worththeconversation, an educational platform dedicated to preventing sexual abuse of children with disabilities through education and empowerment. Learn more about the prevention of child abuse on her feed and website.

WHY do I blog? .
I blog because I have been blessed to learn an incredible amount about behavior from many incredible people in my life and I feel like I should share that information! .
I KNOW how hard it is to raise uniquely challenging kiddos with 2 adopted, 2 with autism and 1 with a neurological disorder! But, I also KNOW that there are ways we can parent that not only make this season more peaceful, but help our kids gain more independence and self pride!
.
My hope is that you all will follow my blog and take from it whatever feels peaceful and helpful to you in your situation. AND, as I continue to publish series, that these combinations of blog posts will allow you to get a handle on a specific behavior that your family is struggling with.

AND, as I continue to publish series, that these combinations of blog posts will allow you to get a handle on a specific behavior that your family is struggling with. .

I’m reminded in the little day to day tasks I do that I am the parent to a child with autism.... ⁣

For ex. The only time I can get my son to eat a banana is at the grocery store... and i don’t even have to try to entice him, he just does it! Every single time!!!!⁣

Give him a banana anywhere else and nothing! ⁣

Did you know: 90% of children with autism struggle with significant eating challenges. You are NOT alone in this I am right there with you. ⁣

The challenges occurs primarily because a child with autism thrives in an expected world of routine and sameness. However, some children with autism can take that preoccupation with sameness to a whole new level. Hence only eating bananas at the grocery store 🤦‍♀️⁣

This kid’s school pictures came back 😂😂😂. They could definitely be better, but they could also be a whole lot worse. In fact, they look worse in the envelope than they do on the wall.
I promise, he smiles all the time at home, just never in front of a camera 🤦🏼‍♀️. #schoolpictures2019 #autismschoolpictures

It was finally mommy's turn to drop off the big girl at preschool today. She's having so much fun so far!
We managed to avoid having her little sister show up to the party too early. We stayed in the hospital on preterm labor watch for almost 3 days. We're home now and settling back in to the normal chaos of our life.
My kids have no chill 😂

This mama is slated to speak at today's Washington State Interagency Coordinating Council meeting, the combined group of representatives from agencies in our state responsible for overseeing and implementing the Early Intervention/Birth-to-Three program.

This month's interagency meeting is in Colville, Wash., completely on the other side of the state, but thanks to the marvel of modern technology, I can join other families on this side in Zoom-ing into the meeting via video conference.

This is what it means to be a part of the state Parent Institute for Engagement (PIE). For those who don't know, PIE is a year-long, leadership training program for parents and caregivers of kids with disabilies and developmental delays. It is run by the Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families. Through this program, we receive training in advocacy and community leadership. We also get to share our stories with those making policy decisions and managing state wide programs that impact our families.

I'm looking forward to today's meeting.

🍂🎃Harvest Festival🎃🍂
.
.
Ava and Alf’s school had a harvest festival service over at the RAF station church today. .
I was pulled aside this morning and told that Alfie would be kept back at school with 2 other SEN children as they didn’t feel he would ‘gain anything’ from attending and they didn’t want him to become distressed with having to sit still and quietly through the service. Now in theory I can totally understand their thinking, there’s lots of things that even we avoid doing at certain times because Alf is likely to have a meltdown, and sometimes as a parent you have to pick your battles 🤷🏼‍♀️ .
BUT I couldn’t help feeling like I’d had a really hard kick to the fanny when I left Alf at school knowing he was going to be excluded from doing something that the rest of his class were doing 😢 needless to say, I’ve spent the whole day feeling sad about all the things he can’t do and the ramifications of this 💔
.
Anyway, fast forward to home time and his teacher hands over to me that Alfie was so upset at being left behind at school that they couldn’t leave him and he ended up going over to the service with his 1:1! AND he was an absolute superstar 🤩 He struggled towards the end but they managed to keep him occupied with raisins and sensory toys.
Such a huge win for my beautiful boy 💪🏼 I’m absolutely over the moon that he’s showed them to never underestimate him and I’m so god damn proud! 💙

YES! Thank you @forthehope for sharing such beautiful and true words. I have been in one of the hardest seasons of life and honestly have been stuck in the darkness. Overwhelmed, anxious, broken, wondering when the storm would break. •

I don’t know how long this storm is going to last, I don’t know how much more my world is going to be shaken up but what I do know is that I don’t have to let it destroy me. I don’t have to let those deep wounds continue to bleed. •

It’s time to wake up, time to step up and look around. It’s time to step into the abundance that God has for me and the life of my family. It may be raining but the sunshine is peeking through, it’s there and it is time to acknowledge it. 💙

"For Down Syndrome Awareness Month, be aware of the Down syndrome momma. The momma that loves her child unconditionally but struggles from time to time with a life she didn’t expect or ask for. Nevertheless she is her child’s greatest protector, advocate and champion. She persists when the world tells her it just isn’t possible because she knows anything is possible when it comes to her child.

The Down syndrome momma’s heart softens to those around her that are different or in need while her spirit finds a strength and determination she never knew she had. She is exhausted mentally, emotionally and physically in a way she could never describe but still somehow finds the energy to advocate, write letters, read new research, try new therapies and schedule appointments all for her child.

Be mindful of the Down syndrome momma that keeps a smile on her face that hides her struggles. She doesn’t want your sorrow, pity or disingenuous comments, but she desperately wants your understanding, support and friendship. She finds it hard to balance celebrating the absolute joy her child brings her whilst admitting life with Down syndrome can be hard. Very hard.

The Down syndrome momma doesn’t want to change her child but she will do everything in her power to make sure the world changes for them.

This Down Syndrome Awareness Month, take a moment to see the momma behind the child. 💛💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛

I'm Sammi Haney (@sammi.haney), I’m 9 years old, and play #Esperanza on the #Netflix Series #RaisingDion. I also started my own t-shirt company www.disabilityshirts.com to provide themed apparel for people with disabilities to spread awareness, acceptance, and love for the special needs community. I was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta. I've broken hundreds of bones. O.I. doesn’t just affect my bones, but also my teeth, lungs and much more. I get infusions to make my bones thicker. I also have telescoping rods in my arms, legs, and back, which straightened all of my bones. I've had to wear many medical braces and have had many surgeries, but I never let that get me down! I have brittle bones and live life to the fullest! I hope people can see past my wheelchair, and see me, as a person.
______
When my parents told people about me being on a Netflix Series, it was disappointing that some of them assumed it must be a show about my medical condition, as if that is all they could see about me, and as if that is the only kind of show that people with disabilities can star in. I got the part, as my parents were told, because when they watched my audition tape I made everyone in the room laugh, and they loved my sassy personality. My wheelchair is not what got me the part. Hopefully, by being on Netflix’s Raising Dion I am able to help remove the stigma that people with disabilities cannot star in major drama series. #yoocandoanything #yoocan #disability #inclusion #wheelchair #story #sammihaney #teamsammi #awareness #oi #OsteogenesisImperfecta #surgery #brittlebonedisease #milestones #challengeaccepted #oican #ability #disability #love #specialneeds #specialneedsfamily #wheelchairlife #netflixseries

Got to the PICU early this morning for a meeting with nutrition and for rounds. I’m tired. I slept maybe a couple hours last night because I was so filled with worry. They brought this cool machine for Addie and Lawson to look at and play with to bring them some joy in the hospital. Made up for the lack of sleep for sure.

The plan for today is to continue giving Addie IV fluids to help slowly lower her sodium levels. Technically she is in kidney failure despite her kidneys being fine last week, because the levels are so high. Their belief is that as her sodium levels decrease her kidneys will heal as well.

We have been so blessed from all of you. Your prayers have been such a blessing, as have your generous and thoughtful gifts. I wish I had time to comment to everyone and message everyone but it’s so busy here. Please just know we are so grateful and appreciative.

For those of you asking how you can help us during this time, anything is appreciated. Many of you have asked for PayPal or Venmo so we can have meals or gas money and such. You may PayPal at PayPal.me/stephaniewolfe or Venmo at @mathewsbambina and know that there aren’t enough words for us to thank you all.

Most of all, your prayers are what we covet. Please pray for Addie’s kidneys and that they continue to make pee, that her high sodium levels continue to decrease, and that her kidneys show signs of becoming healthy again. Please also pray for the staff taking care of her, and our family and the stress of all of this. Thank you so much.

Sigh. Took Addie to the doctor this afternoon for a hospital discharge follow up and blood work. In the hospital they’d been worried about her sodium levels being high. They checked her kidneys and they were fine, and said to increase her water the next few days and it should help level it out. Well, with the medicines she got sent home on she had extreme diarrhea and all liquids she took in immediately went out. My poor baby. So honestly, I’m sure that didn’t help her sodium levels at all.

Fast forward to this afternoon and Addie’s doctor called and said her blood work from today came back and Addie needed to go to the ER. Her sodium levels were higher than when she was at the hospital (surely no thanks to the diarrhea) and if they got higher we would need to worry about brain swelling. So this is insanely serious.

She got a direct admit to the PICU where (I’m assuming) they’ll be giving her fluids to try to slowly bring her sodium levels down. Please please pray for Addie. I’m insanely worried and so scared for her. Our family has been under so much stress and I’m not sure how much we all can take. My anxiety is at an all time high.

Lawson and I got to the hospital this morning before rounds and he was so happy to see his sissy. He was so worried about Addie and daddy that he was pretty upset last night.

Addie is doing well this morning. She is pretty puffy from getting fluids overnight but she’s in great spirits. She woke up and just smiled and laughed knowing Lawson and I were here to see her. She also had a big appetite for lunch and that made me happy because she’s been refusing most of her food lately.

We don’t have any of her labs back yet (they take 24-48 hours) but we do know it’s not pneumonia, not flu, it’s likely a trach infection, and once we find out what kind of bug it is we can get some medicines to kick it. So it’s the waiting game right now and we are ok with that.

All in all it’s been a good day for Addie despite still needing more oxygen and extra TLC. Thank you all for praying for her and loving our girl. We are so grateful.

Disneyland - Theme Park

Just when I think Disney can’t possibly outdo itself, it goes and does all the outdoing all over again 👏🏽 Also, I’m not crying, you’re crying 😭
•••
To the cast members who continue to make every moment of our weekly trips magical AF, thank you! My sweet Evan has two conditions that make life a little extra challenging, autism and microcephaly. He can be WAY too handsy with the CM’s and characters, loves to rip at their outfits, and pulls them all over the place. Each time I go to apologize or explain to one of them why he does the things he does (i.e. licking random Disney walls 🤦🏻‍♀️) they always reassure me that they enjoy interacting with him and can totally handle his unique behaviors.
•••
Today he was so excited to wear his Evil Queen dress (made by the amazing @musiccitymousecouture) that he struggled a lot more than usual. But he had magical moment after magical moment in the parks. My heart feels like it might burst right now so imma stop typing and just leave this picture right here. For all of my fellow mamas and papas out there raising Magically Gifted children, our love and support are always with you ✊🏽

October is my most favorite month of the year. Let me tell you my top 3 reasons why...
•It’s my birthday month
•Fall colors and cooler temps
•Running outside on crunchy leaves
🍂
Also, I’m counting on this month to be a lot better for this handsome boy.

we knew in our hearts something just wasn't right. we took him straight to the children's hospital and hoped they would listen. thankfully, they did...

in today’s post, @lauren_nia_lowery shares about her journey with her sweet boy, leo. their story is powerful, but their love and devotion to leo is even more inspiring. click the link in my bio to keep reading 💛

🍁Happy Friday from this little joyrider!🍁

Slowly but surely Ellis is making strides with his gate trainer! I didn’t think he was quite ready for it but he proved us wrong yesterday during therapy. He was falling backwards and literally bringing himself all the way back to the top and straightening his posture . I was so impressed . Kids are truly amazing. One day you go from worrying if they will ever hit a milestone, and then the next day they hit three. So thankful for this little ray of sunshine💙💙💙
