Another amazing exercise that you probably aren't doing.

Zercher Split Squats/Rev Lunges with an Elevated front foot.

But why am I doing them like this?
What does elevating the front foot allow me to do?
Why hold the weights like that?

Clue: from a load perspective the weak link will be the arms here so I'm clearly not using this as a "main" hypertrophy exercise.
So what am I trying to do through using this?

Every exercise should have a reason, and the reason should be specific to the person in front of you.

Considerations: - Foot placement matters
- Breathing matters
- Shin angle matters
- Hip flexion degree matters - Ribcage position matters - Amount of 'arch' in the lower back matters

If none of these are paid attention to and you see 2 people doing the same exercise but they look COMPLETELY different from eachother whilst they are doing it, do you think their outcomes will be the same?

No. But which one will have a favourable outcome and which will not?

That's where considering the above comes into play.

Picking the wrong exercise for somebody is okay, we have to do that sometimes to know that it doesn't fit. Keeping an exercise in a program that doesn't fit though however, is not a smart long term plan.

We've supported this clinic for the last three years, funding the salaries 17-22 staff as well as all the costs required for them to do their job; medication, equipment, electricity and stationery. These doctors, nurses, cleaners and caretakers are brave people, working in a volatile and challenging place. Hospitals and clinics continue to be bombed in this part of Syria, our team had to move in early September when the original clinic was destroyed in an airstrike. They relocated close by as opposed to moving to a safer area because of the need of the surrounding population. Without this clinic, they would have to travel miles for health care, placing them at greater risk. ⠀

We're so proud to continue facilitating the work of this team, who not only provide health care where there is none, but also hope and stability to the local Syrian community. ⠀

Dumbbell Prone Rows, probably my favourite horizontal row position.

I like the external stability it gives you with the bench as opposed to a traditional bent over row.

It works both sides at the same time which keeps the pace of the workout up.
I used straps for this to take the grip element out and focus on that back squeeze.
With that extra support, it allows me to use the upper back way more, which calling back to a post a few weeks back, was the down side of some heavy deadlifts.

If I'm being self critical, I should have pulled my hips under more and had some more midline tension. I'm a bit too arched for my liking.

Catching up on a couple of challenges from last week, so I decided to try and combine the two...
1️⃣Drink a glass of water while balancing on a barbell (thanks for the inspo @workwithwhatyougot1)
2️⃣ Take off your jacket in a pistol squat ( #pistolsquatjacketchallenge from @clayton.moves and @b_nevison)

Love these types of challenges for forcing a level of movement variability you wouldn’t necessarily get in your day-to-day life! And for testing the limits of your abilities - it’s always cool to see how your strength/mobility/balance training applies to strange and unfamiliar tasks like these - it’s an interesting way to measure your level of adaptability.

Plus they’re just good fun to have a crack at and play around with - focusing on building up a good foundation through consistent daily work is super important but so is letting go of structure and just playing with movement, however that looks for you!

To do it seamlessly your hips need to be open the leg and core muscles must be in balance. At all times your knees should tend to the outwards sides of the feet. Don’t sink in.
Try it now and if you can’t get down or you are loosing balance while doing so make it your goal to get there.

My life’s work is working on strength to counter my excess flexibility. I’m always banging on about the importance of strength training to my yoga teacher training students.

Not only will it make your asana practice WAY better, strengthening your muscles and stabilising your joints will keep you injury free so you can do yoga for years to come.
.
One problem area for many yogis is hip flexor and core strength. These compressions are a KILLER and great for working both those areas. I’m definitely not perfect - this is at the end of a session and I’m knackered, so rocking way too much.
.
Focus on pulling your lower abs in and lifting from deep inside underneath your belly button. At first these will set your quads on fire but as you get stronger you’ll feel them more in your deep belly.
.
Pair them with glute bridges to work your butt as well. I’ve used these exercises as a finisher but they are faaaarking challenging, so if you’re new to them, give them a go BEFORE you’re a hot mess like me.

So here are some deep thoughts about relationships. They bring joy, they bring pain. This is for both friendships and partnerships. What I’ve realized about my greatest relationship pains is that the pain is coming from me blaming them. Whether it’s been girlfriends or my ex, there were always signs. To them I was an after thought but they were my first thought. I’ve had friendships where I’ve had to make all of the effort, going out of my way to please, making time, and each time I tried and got the same result, I felt pain. I blamed them. Why don’t they like me? What more could I do? The reality is they didn’t have to like me. Not everyone will like me and NEWS FLASH to myself, I won’t like everyone either. Them not liking me doesn’t diminish my worth as a human and I don’t need someone else to give me value. When you feel worthless you can’t get your fill from someone else. IT HAS TO BE FROM YOU! You have to love yourself completely. You have to acknowledge and cherish your faults for they have shaped you. You have to acknowledge the you are the only you on this planet which makes you one of the rarest creations. Know that about yourself. Know that you are perfectly unique and that this world would change without you. You are here for a purpose greater than what you can imagine but it can’t be granted if you do not acknowledge how truly special you are. ✨💗

Finding balance standing on one foot. Leaning forward, opening my chest in reverence and with openness to whats to come. Reaching my hand back towards my foot because the stability in this posture comes from the strength in the kick...each alignment in each pose has a purpose, when we hold a pose long enough, we are able to explore these benefits and allow the body to absorb them. ✨

Here I have my awesome basketball athlete @yelenaleu performing a single leg hang clean from an single leg eccentric isometric RDL.

Olympic lifts are incredible movements for improving athletic performance particularly components dealing with power, speed, explosiveness, and even strength & force production. However, balance & stability, particularly unilateral aspects, are equally important attributes typically not addressed during Olympic lifts. Additionally, aspects of symmetry and motor control when comparing sides of the body (left vs. right) in all biomotor capabilities are critical.
Unfortunately most lifters have one side of the body they tend to favor oftentimes producing & contributing to greater imbalances & deficits in strength, power, mobility, stability, & motor control, ultimately leading to greater risk of injury. These can be further ingrained during traditional bilateral movements including double leg jumps & traditional Olympic lifts.

Performing Olympic lifts from a single leg position particularly when using an eccentric isometric RDL helps to resolve many of these issues.
Here are 10 reasons why single leg Olympic lifts with eccentric isometrics are so effective.

1. Allow the athletes to target each hip more intensely & with greater overload than the traditional bilateral versions of Olympic lifts. That’s because the athlete can typically handle 55-65% of the load they could handle on the bilateral counterpart.

2. Provide more low back friendly variations of Olympic lifts as the total load is considerably less than bilateral versions thereby reducing stress to the spine.

3. Provide more shoulder and wrist friendly options as the catch phase is considerably less demanding due to the relatively lighter loads.
