What a lot of people don't know is that the client has to put in just as much effort into their program and training as their trainer. Over time clients learn that communication and feedback are key to achieving the best result possible for them.⁣

Here are some tips on how to be the best possible client:⁣

🔸 Tracking food - Even the bad stuff⁣
The more a client tracks food, the more accurate their PT can be when prescribing changes within their nutrition.⁣

🔸 Completing all programmed sessions⁣
If you’re skipping days on your program, it’s going to make it so much harder for you in future weeks and also gives your trainer a false reading when progressing you through your program.⁣

🔸 Letting your trainer know about upcoming social events⁣
It gives your trainer a chance to sort out a game plan and maybe introduce a cap on the amount of drinks allowed for a certain occasion.⁣

🔸 Tracking weight accurately⁣
If you’re tracking your weight then your trainer knows if you’ve been eating too little or too much- or doing too little or too much. For those of you with body composition goals, this is very important. This along with calorie tracking is going to be vital to the results that you receive in the gym.⁣

🔸 Communicating feelings - Overall, or about any aspects of the program⁣
Headspace is a big one with training. If a client is currently going through some personal battles, it may alter their ability to be as adherent to the program. The more that you’re able to give your trainer the more they can help you achieve the results that you want.⁣

The stairclimber exercise alone, without the thrusters and the dumbbell fly’s with should press and crunches beforehand and just love the way you casually add extra reps!!!

There are major issues with the strength and conditioning industry in Australia, yet most coaches seem to want to argue about exercise selection, as opposed to working together and trying to move the industry forwards...
.
Among other things:
• Private sector strength and conditioning barely exists/is barely recognised in Australia;
• There are not enough jobs for the amount of graduates/coaches;
• Strength and Conditioning Coaches get paid very little, like very little (most of them anyway), and work insane hours, which negatively impacts the rest of their life.
.
I completely understand that every industry/job has it’s issues! And I’m not smart enough to have the answers to these problems. The point here is that I believe the industry will not progress forwards without coaches coming together, rather than arguing with each other!

I thought that this was quite appropriate considering the recent feedback and recognition I have been receiving👊🏼 to progress and develop in this world, do not shy away from and ignore the findings of those we aspire to be or we are inspired by. Truths are built upon previous discoveries👌🏼 I myself learn from those around me who have been there and done it, as well as learning from my involvement in academic research

I am a huge advocate for evidence based practice (EBP), however utilising other people’s practical experiences and knowledge can only enhance the application of EBP. If you pick up tips from those who inspire you, or you find an adapted version of someone’s practice works best from you, do it! Every day we learn something new, consciously or subconsciously, and this enables us to progress in life. Seek help, learn and apply new findings. Some will work and some won’t, but you won’t know until you try it!

A lot of physiotherapists, doctors, orthopaedic surgeons, and the general public have to change their beliefs about the spine.

People with degenerative discs have been told that they can’t bend their back, lift heavy and do manual work.

There are a lot of examples of people who have gone back to doing the very things they’re being told they can’t do.
There is a lot of fear about the structure of the spine.
They have been told to be careful with their backs and have the fear to do harm.
.
We know that fear is a huge driver of abnormal pain behaviour.
.
A shift in beliefs has to happen within the medical, physiotherapy profession and in the general public.
.
We can trust our back and shouldn't be feared. It is a robust, strong structure.
Often with disabling back pain, the motor systems are overactive, hypersensitive. The muscles are guarding the back too much.
That can be driven by habits of movements, habits of posture, fear, anxiety, stress, or just the presence of pain and you developed a protective guarding response.

My first meeting with @monika.w.chandra went something like this.
Monika: Kailash I want to start CrossFit, but I don't want to do a single squat, they have wrecked my knees.
Kailash: Ok let's see what you got.
Though she was training under a personal trainer in a Globo gym her squat was a disaster, and her relationship with the movement was a negative one. Once you mess up your relationship with any movement the brain always views it as a threat or danger. It took me five minutes to correct her squat and Monika was so surprised that she could hit a squat without her knees crying out for help.
CUT TO NOW
This her rocking dumbbell squat cleans without a worry in the world. Moral of the story, squats aren't the villain, infact there isn't a better exercise in the book that keeps the knees healthy like the squat does. Its the way you do them, that makes you or breaks you.

Let’s Talk RELATIONSHIP STATUS:
For the past 12 months, I’ve been single. At first, I felt a little uncomfortable thinking about sharing this, but then I thought to myself “Why is it only when we are in happy relationships that we share memories and moments about our relationship?”. Why does no one post about being single? Are we afraid that people will judge us? Are we afraid that just because we are not in a relationship, that we are not worthy, or not as good as everyone else? Are we embarrassed?
The last 12 months have been a rollercoaster, dating people I thought were right for me, dating people I knew were wrong for me, and putting my own needs on the back burner to please someone else. I’m a sucker for punishment and always have this idea I can change someone who isn’t quite right. This is a common theme for me, and created a sense of dependency on the man of the hour that was toxic to me and the relationship. What I wasn’t focusing on for much of the last year, was my relationship with myself. I found myself making sacrifices for people who were not treating me with respect, and giving away my time and energy because I was afraid of saying ‘No, I deserve better. I was afraid of being alone. Over the last few months, I have consciously been forcing myself to spend more time by myself. I now live alone, and when it first happened I felt extremely uncomfortable, and forced myself to continuously make plans and be out. But once I realized the inner peace that truly comes with being comfortable being alone, I was able to realize my full potential. I have been culling my interactions with people who I have no real future with. I am valuing my time and my energy more. I am consciously choosing who I associate with, and I am spending more time focusing on my own goals and future. It has taken a lot of discomfort, and it’s a continuous work in progress, but each day I am feeling more and more confident in myself. Even if I had met ‘The One’ in the last 12 months, I was not emotionally available to foster a healthy and meaningful relationship. So for now, I’m going to continue on this journey, and my relationship status is #SingleNotLooking #RealTalk ✌🏼

Sometimes when your travelling the gym equipment can leave a little to be desired. No squat rack or bench, no deadlifts and no heavy weights around

That said, you can still get a good workout in, and treat it as recovery from heavy squats, deadlifts and bench presses

In the past few years an idea that higher frequency training is better for hypertrophy has been floating around due to a few research papers. This has prompted the quick fix of train each body part 3x a week and you’ll grow them regardless if you’re putting enough volume in it. Thankfully some new research came out and can put this misinformation to sleep.

First paper (Gomez et al. 2018) compared low-frequency and high-frequency splits with equated volume. One consisted of training each muscle group specifically ones a week; the next trained a full body routine training each muscle group multiple times a week. After 8 weeks they compared pre training and post muscle mass finding no difference between routines as far as strength and muscle gain.

The next study, (Schoenfeld et al 2018) compared low volume training routines to high volume in an 8 week training routine. At the end of the 8 weeks they compared strength and muscle gain between the 3 groups. The results showed no difference for strength gains between the low, moderate and high volume groups. On the other hand, the higher volume group they had a significantly greater increase in muscle size. This is further supported by (Klemp A et al. 2017) which found that when volume is equated rep ranges do not show significant difference in hypertrophy. Showing us, that muscle hypertrophy seems to follow a dose relationship between training volume and hypertrophy. ⠀
What does this mean; this shows us that if your goal is to maximize muscle growth a higher volume split is better to achieve your goal. On the other hand, if your goal is strength gain you may potentially benefit from a lower volume split. This is how I designed my hypertrophy program actually based on a high volume single body part a day system if anyone is interested it is available in the link in my bio.

The Plate Weight Blast

Set a timer for 30 second intervals of work and move from exercise to exercise in the circuit without resting. Rest 30-60 seconds between rounds and complete 4-6 rounds through!

CIRCUIT:
30 seconds Squat and Press
30 seconds per side Single Arm Pinch Grip Row
30 seconds Front Lunge and Twist
30 seconds Triceps and Biceps
30 seconds Dead Bug Abs

Why did I workout so much?

I told everyone it was because I love it. I love working hard. And while that was true, it wasn’t the whole truth.

The real reason I worked out so much?
-
Fear.
-
I was afraid. I was afraid:

➡️I would stop making progress
➡️I would lose what progress I had made
➡️I would get fat
-
Because I didn’t have my nutrition under control, I somehow felt like I had to make up for it by working out more. The mindset of “More is Better” was running out of control as I added more and more to my workout week.

The irony here was I was making ZERO progress, and I felt like I was constantly injured. I wasn’t losing any weight, my lifts weren’t improving, and I wasn’t sleeping well. But I still didn’t change anything. I was too scared.

When @syattfitness started writing my programming, he scaled me back from 6 days a week to 4 days a week.

I thought I would lose my mind. And I might have driven him a little bit nuts 🙄

But I trusted him and trusted the process, and what did I discover?

I was making more progress by dialing back my training days and allowing my body to recover than I ever had before.

I was now allowing my body to rest and recover . My next workout day was far more effective than it ever had been. And the very best part? I was chomping at the bit to get back to the gym. It was pure joy and excitement to go crush my workout. -
Please hear me when I say you don’t have to workout 6-7 days a week in order to make, or maintain progress. If you want to be in this game for a long long time, and lift with me when we are 110 years old, we need to be smart with our training. Allow your body to rest, and hit it hard when you do workout. -
More is not better. Better is better.
