Practising Mindfulness.
_______________________
Set Aside Some Time: Practising short bouts of Mindfulness regularly can be better than being mindful for a long time occasionally. It can help to establish a regular time each day to practice, or practice mindful skills in daily life like focusing on the taste, sight, and temperature of drinking a cup of tea or coffee, the sounds and smells of having a shower, the taste and sensation of brushing your teeth, the sound of a kettle boiling, the sensations of your body as you sit in a chair, or the feel of your feet and body moving as you walk.

Go Slowly: It is important to practice building up your mindfulness skills slowly. Remember that it is a new skill and that it will take time to develop. Most people find it very difficult to sit and be still for long periods of time so try to do a few minutes at a time and gradually build up to more.

Be Patient: There is no need to set rigid targets when practising mindfulness. Avoid putting pressure on yourself as this will make it harder to be mindful.
_______________________
The Key Steps: • Pay Attention: as mentioned above, when you are walking make a special effort to pay real attention to the feeling of your feet and body moving.
• Notice: during mindfulness it is inevitable that your mind and thoughts will wander at some point, simply notice where your thoughts have drifted to and complete the next step.
• Choose and Return: choose to bring your attention back to the present moment, this can be completed by focusing on your breath, body, or something in your surroundings
• Be Aware and Accept: notice and be aware of your emotions you are feeling and the sensations in your body, try to observe and accept these feelings with friendly curiosity and without judgement.
• Be Kind to Yourself: remember that mindfulness is difficult, try not to be critical of yourself if your mind wanders.

How Does Mindfulness Work?

Automatic Pilot: Throughout large portions of our daily life we will often find ourselves on autopilot. Putting ourselves in autopilot mode can actually be very useful as it allows us to remember and compete routine activities easily, with minimal cognitive effort. However, when we are on autopilot we can find ourselves getting caught up in unhelpful thoughts and reactions. Mindfulness encourages us to pay more attention when completing everyday tasks such as eating, showering, or walking somewhere in order to avoid and manage these thoughts.

Doing Mode vs Being Mode: These modes represent two different ways of thinking. ‘Doing Mode’ describes us when we are constantly busy and interacting to our environmental demands, this mode helps us to solve problems and achieve goals but overuse of this mode can leave us feeling stressed, anxious, and exhausted. Mindfulness tries to help us develop our alternative ways of thinking called the ‘Being Mode’ where we’re happy to accept things just as they are and not putting too much pressure on ourselves to change them.

Acceptance: This means paying attention to difficult feelings without judging yourself or trying to find a solution. Accepting difficult feelings doesn’t mean putting up with bad situations, it means paying attention to your feelings and seeing if they pass or if there is something you can do to make yourself feel better.
________
Creating Space: Mindfulness helps you to separate yourself from a stressful situation and allows you to choose how you want to respond. For example, if you’re in a stressful situation and feel overwhelmed with negative thoughts you can stop and focus your attention on your breathing or notice the sensations of your feet on the floor. This can help you take a step back from the negative thoughts and observe them with more objectivity.

Detect and Redirect: Mindfulness will help you detect negative emotions and look after yourself before the feelings get worse. Stress is usually felt in certain areas of your body, such as muscles tension or shallow breathing. If you notice this, you can take steps to help look after yourself.

#Stressy...Twinster I was thinking about the first time I met you 3 months shy of the age of 15. The year was 99 and the turn of the millennium scare allowed me to finally meet you, even tho our souls had known each other for many lifetimes. Seperated by 3 weeks in birth you became my Paternal Twinster. Although we grew in the same city LA (you in Inglewood and me in Pico Union) and shared the same blood we grew up so differently. You being the youngest of your siblings and I being the oldest of mine. You playing softball and I playing basketball. You reppin the piel morena y yo la guera. Who would have known that it would not effect the bond we have created and how similar we are regardless of it all. We still March Queens that love everything Pink, athletic as fuck, and bomb ass SalviRicans. I know it hasn't all been Henny n Butterflys, we been through it all good and bad. I thank the universe for our bond. So today you are MY #WCW... I love you twin!!! Blood by destiny, #cannabistwinsters420 by choice!

Happy Wellness Wednesday!

Today I was seriously stressing out about my day. I took a few minutes to appreciate today for what it was, and felt much better after.

Today I had a big job interview, and my first appointment with a therapist. Freaky stuff, right?! All I wanted to do was crawl into bed and nap it out. Instead I sat at my desk with my favorite candle lit. I sipped and a glass of water with a few drops of ashwaghanda in it, and just breathed.

I breathed until my breath stopped shaking, then I breathed a little more. I looked out my window at the trees I love, fiddled with my rocks and crystals that usually sit on my desk untouched, and appreciated my lil plants.

I just sat. I enjoyed the moment for what it was, and the day for everything it could be. And it was so refreshing.

I can be the first person to admit how easily I give into my anxiety. But today, I stood strong. I sat. I breathed. I won.

It involves making a special effort to give your full attention to what is happening in the present moment, a moment connecting with the here and now. This week we will be introducing Mindfulness. We’ll be taking a look at its origins, what it entails, how and why it works, and taking a look at Mindfulness in practice.

So where did Mindfulness come from?
__________________
It is generally accepted that the rise of Mindfulness in recent years is a result of the work of Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program. However, the psychological process of bringing one’s attention to experiences occurring in the present moment has been a popular practice for centuries, being largely associated with Buddha.

The term ‘Mindfulness’ itself is a translation of the Pali term ‘Sati’ which is a significant element of Buddhist traditions. In Buddhist teachings mindfulness is ultilised to develop self-knowledge and wisdom which will gradually lead to enlightenment or the complete freedom from suffering.

Mindfulness practices have been dated as far back as 400-500bc under the name Vipassana Meditation which was rediscovered by Guatama Buddha and was taught by him as a universal remedy for universal ills.

Fast forward to the present day, studies have shown this ancient technique of meditation is effective in the reduction of both ruminating thoughts and worry, two elements which have been found to contribute to depression, anxiety, and high stress levels.

One of the craziest moments of 2017.
I still remember the Facebook message I received at 11am: "Hey, are you aware you have a photoshoot with Sum41 at 3pm?". I wasn't. And my photo gear was at my parents place, 100km from where I live and an extra 100km to the venue. I never rushed so hard to a venue like that day. Because of traffic jams we (me and Timo, my assistent I picked up in Bruges) arrived to late, so we were thrown in an underprepared interview, and the photoshoot got moved to just before show time. Probably never stressed so hard in my life. During the one minute photoshoot I even managed to pull out of the plug of my lightgear. The result could have been way better but under the given circumstances I was happy as fuck. One of the most memorable days ever.
