    We have three distinct personalities within us. Self is at the core of the three. 
The exiles. This part of us holds all of our childhood shame/traumas. It’s our shame that we bury deep. It’s dying to be acknowledged but gets ignored. 
The managers. This part of us protects us from hurt by others. It tries to prevent painful feelings and experiences from flooding our self-awareness. They also tend to be the critical voice within us. Almost as if a parent who is overly critical of their child. Although at the core the critic comes from a place of love, it is harsh and not helpful. 
The firefighters. This part emerges when exiles break out and demand attention. This part works to distract a person’s attention from the shame that is held deep in the exiled part. Firefighters emerge in the form of risky behaviors including overeating, excessive drug use, violence, gambling, hyper sexuality, co-dependence, over working, self-medicating, etc. Their goal is to numb.

Dysfunction occurs when these three parts are at war with one another, instead of working together in a healthier way. Let your exiles out. Acknowledge them. Soothe your managers and tell them you know they mean well but trust a little more. Redirect your firefighters and acknowledge numbing is beneficial when over flooding emotions take hold but let’s do it in healthier ways. Together they become one with the self fully validated and protected.

    Just a little bit of advice: I have found reverse lunges for most of you thay incorporate them into your workouts.  I have noticed most people use front  subconsciously but they dont do them right. ****************************************** Although the muscles affected are identical between the two lunges the reverse lunge can be a safer option. Back lunges benefits include less stress on your knees- it is safer to form the 90゚ angle between your thigh and calf and to keep your knee aligned with your ankle. Doing forward lunges using the wrong technique can cause knee pain because it's more likely you'll form the wrong angle between your thigh and calf in addition taking a step forward can make it hard to maintain stability because you are shifting your body weight to your leading foot. During a reverse lunge the weight is maintained on the forward leg that remains stationary.

When you develop strange/sharp pains during a workout,  you are either overloading (drop the weight), or you are doing the exercise wrong.  Know the right muscles involved in (especially) complex workouts and know when to engage them.  Save yourself from injury if you are not sure about what you're doing. 
It's also wise to stop the exercise if you're in a group setting if you're hurting. The purpose of the instructor being there is to correct your form or modify it for you.  Know your limits!

However, it’s no lie that within the black community, we are drowning in depression and can hardly talk to our families about it. Instead, we turn to smoking and drinking to cope. What will it take for us to take our mental health seriously and seek therapy?

    This is my dog.

I think he’s cute, but he looks a little sad. .
He jumped in my seat, whilst I was off making a coffee to see what I was up too. .
As a counsellor, I am required to keep up to date with what’s happening in my industry and community at large. .
I had been keeping up to date with mental health statistics in Australia. .
However, as you can see my dog looks about how I feel when I read about mental health statistics. .
What we often see is numbers. .
What I see are names of people, people I love and care about. .
Makes it a little more personal doesn’t it!

Don’t get me wrong, statistics are important.
.
Without statistics I wouldn’t be able to work in the industry that I do, which I love by the way.

You just won’t see many statistics on my page.
.
If statistics are your thing, then I can certainly recommend pages where this information can be found.

    When I look back at the many videos I recorded, one thing I’ve noticed I’m more confident to be me. ⁣
⁣
I have more self worth and self love for myself now then I’ve ever felt and I know that my mind, body and soul have been longing to feel it.⁣
⁣
I try to recollect the memories in middle school but sometimes I rather not jump into that dark place of loneliness. Middle school was the years to experience your first crush, having boyfriend, and best friends. ⁣
⁣
I, on the other hand had those but I wasn’t taken seriously because of the way of my teeth but a girl with body and booty. I remembered boys would bet how easy I was because they pretended to like me but in reality the only thing they were interested is the body and as long as I had paper bag over my head.  Not 100% their exact words but i was stupid enough to believe every single word and act like it was normal. ⁣
⁣
Growing up as a teen in high school we’re turning around as I had ex bf’s that were actually interested and I’ll be for ever grateful for it. Showing me they are actually good guys in the world who care for who you are and not the just the looks. ⁣
⁣
After high school I felt like I was going back to the deep loneliness. Not knowing who I wanted to be or what I wanted to be, I attended Tech school to be a car mechanic. I thought maybe men will take me seriously and I’ll get to earn their respect⁣
⁣
Soon after graduating, I worked in a car shop for a year and decided that no matter what field you’d put yourself into, no one will ever take you seriously. ⁣
⁣
The struggles I’ve been through to finding who I am and where I want to be as come to an end. ⁣
⁣
Because I have found my intentions and they are to feel grateful with you are. Your past does not define who are you. It is never too late to start a new beginning even after being in your late 20’s.  Yoga taught me many things and self love is one of them. ❤️ ⁣

    Many times what is showing up as anger on the surface is actually a more socially acceptable manifestation of something deeper. Next time you notice yourself expressing anger, I encourage you to question if anger is the true root feeling, or if it’s just easier to express anger than the real underlying emotion.
