I feel very unprepared for placement auditions, but I guess that’s what you get when you don’t practice enough for a while. Everything is rough around the edges. For me, all I expect from an audition is to walk out knowing I played my best and I prepared as well as I could, no matter the outcome. I know that if I took the audition right now I would walk out feeling demoralized, because I know I did not play how I know I can. In an audition I want to A) feel prepared which makes me far less nervous and B) to walk out smiling knowing that I played to the best of my abilities. I think with these two mentality’s auditions are far less stressful. But honestly right now I can say that I haven’t prepared well and that I wouldn’t play to the best of my abilities, so I’d be super nervous and then upset with myself after, which is a bad combo. I want to play my audition and sound like Noah Korenfeld, not Noah but 30% worse. I also don’t want my first time playing in college to set me off on the wrong foot. I don’t want to make them question “Why did we admit this kid again??” And right now it honestly feels very much that way, especially considering how high the level of performance is at NEC. So while I recognize that at the moment I’m not in a great spot, that doesn’t mean it can’t get better. Obviously I shouldn’t have to do this now, but I have a little bit of time and me recognizing the issue is the first step. So despite me mentally being unhappy with myself, I will keep on going, because the better I play the better I will feel. The better prepared I am the happier. The video is a bad, very out of tune section of the Jorgensen Romance. This is a good example of what I mean by rough around the edges, I have the notes but am I really saying something? Plus my intonation and timing(especially on excerpts) is something I’m really unhappy with right now so that’s the focus for everything.

Day 67 of #100daysofpractice: With band starting up and me being surrounded by upperclassmen and people that can give me feedback on this spot, combined with the practice routine I picked up in the summer, I'm starting to be incredibly happy with the progress I'm making, especially during fundamentals. Also I need to keep practicing Blue Monk and improv😭

Videos 1-2: ...I tried, @beyond.the.bone. 37's one of my favorite etudes, but it's also probably in like the top 5 hardest in the whole book. This also shows just how much of a blessing/curse recording can be for consistency because I of course got self conscious while I was recording and it was much sloppier than it was prior. Always perform, dudes.
Video 3: Vivace again, I'll be posting it every day in some form. Something our band director did with our marching show that I thought was cool was cutting the metronome tempo in half repeatedly to see the band's tempo habits, so I did the same here. My set tempo is going to be quarter = 138, so this is two measures = 23. I tended to drag before the eighth notes and slightly rush during and right after the eighth notes and this helped a lot. Every day I will be tackling a different aspect of this piece, tomorrow will be intonation, day after will be intervals, day after will be breakdown phrase by phrase, and then I'll put it all together with interpretation until the lesson. I want to master my Alessi before I try to refine my Lindberg, if you catch my drift.

- an old video from June 30th bc I was too embarrassed to post the stuff from today 🤧
- what I practiced
⠀⠀
Hi 👋 just a half hour today because my inner lip started bleeding. I srsly need to use way less pressure when I play.
⠀⠀
School has absolutely swamped with no time to practice :/
Even though hw isn’t mandatory, I’m gonna do it all for at least till the end of August so I get a general sense of which classes actually need it, and which ones are just busy-work. Surely then I’ll hv a lot more time.
⠀⠀
In the mean time, I have a vague plan to try to actually get some practicing in throughout the week, and it is just to stay after school everyday and practice there because 1) I’ll be more motivated, 2) I don’t lose an hour of time by coming home on the bus, 3) once I’m done I can just go the library to do hw bc again, I feel like I’ll get it done faster since I’ll be more motivated.
⠀⠀
Ughhh the only thing is y’all know how much I loathe practicing at school 😣 honestly I want to just put a music stand in the little window of the practice room so no one knows I’m the one who’s playing so horrendously, but I feel that’s a bit over the top.
⠀⠀
I’m going to try to practice for more than an hour tomorrow, bc it’s been a while since I’ve even hit an hour 🙄 I’ll probably split it up through the day.
⠀⠀
And I also think I’m just going to audition for the middle jazz band, bc I can play that part of the etude at tempo, just not the second half (which is for the top band) but idk I’ll see on thurs/fri
