Time for our second art challenge - just in time for the Bank Holiday Weekend:

The artist Vincent Van Gogh painted a chair and said it was a self-portrait. Obviously he didn’t look like a chair, but he felt the chair he chose showed some aspects of his personality.

If you were a chair, what chair would you be?

If you feel you are a born ruler, a throne might be right, or if you can’t make your mind up a revolving chair might be perfect.

As this week's art challenge we're challenging you to draw a picture of a chair that has your personality, and write a sentence to explain your choice.

Make sure you tag us and include the hashtag #TheArtOfRecovery when you post it to make sure we can see it and share it!

Happy drawing!

Between this Monet or that DaVinci or the Vangogh or the Serat and Rousseau, I was treated with some of the world's most legendary artist's work at the National Gallery in London. I love how all these museums and galleries were free to the public and encourages cultural education. What a collection....

A book a week over summer, week 6:
Discipline and Punish: The Birth Of The Prison, by Michel Foucault.
.
This incredible book isn’t for the faint hearted 😄 Foucault describes in detail how our judicial system has evolved from public displays of torture and execution to our current penal institutions.
.
The theory, I feel, can also be applied to many other forms of institution. And accurately describes how the act of surveillance bears down on employees and citizens with the same level of suspicion a prison guard may have for an inmate.
.
Foucault makes our current social media connectivity sound almost inevitable. The following statement was written in 1975 and made in reference to the police; it sounds like the foundations were laid which would see us internalise the gaze of the power that dominated us, until we began policing ourselves.
.
“And, in order to be exercised, this power had to be given the instrument of permanent, exhaustive, omnipresent surveillance, capable of making all visible, as long as it could remain invisible. It had to be like a faceless gaze that transformed the whole social body into a field of perception: thousands of eyes posted everywhere, mobile attention ever on the alert, a long, hierarchized network [...]”

Can Gogh Alive - great way to see the master painting from very up close:) Complaints? Yes. The exhibition was too small and some of the images weren't sharp enough. But all in all, worth it:) #vangoghalive #valencia #vangogh #artexperience #art

Van Gogh’s chair 1888, oil on canvas
An interesting aspect of this work, its simplistic nature speaks so much more than just a chair. It’s calming, the tobacco pipe placed on the chair welcomes the viewer to sit in the chair and light the pipe. His bedroom scene along with this image takes a step back from conventional views and each brushstroke that we can see resembles a sort of structure and texture. We can see that he wants to move away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and wants to create an authentic and homely experience.

A Pair of Leather Clogs 1889 Van Gogh repeatedly took shoes as his subject. He painted these wooden-soled leather clogs in the southern French town of Saint-Rémy. He was being treated for his psychiatric problems in a clinic and for a short period was reluctant to go outside. He continued to paint, however, as soon as he felt well enough. It was at this time that he painted these clogs.
The clogs are shown in close-up, on a rather unnaturally tilted surface. Van Gogh had employed this unusual way of handling perspective before. The meticulous pattern of small stripes also occurs in pictures painted two years previously. (@vangoghmuseum ) #vangogh #vincentvangogh #vincentvangoghlove #art #arte #lovingvincent
