Twists are one of my very favorite groups of postures. As someone who has dealt with a lot of digestive upset in my life, learning yoga twists has been a life saver for me. Twists are postures that generally involve moving the shoulder girdle to face in an opposite direction to the hips. There are different twists that target the upper, middle and lower parts of our torso, all having their own unique set of health benefits. Here are the top five reasons why you should practice yoga twists.
* Improve Digestive Function
When you are in a twist, you are compressing your digestive organs, placing them under weight. This will cause a lack of circulation. When you release your twist there will be a rush or fresh blood that will flood your digestive organs. Fresh blood flow = fresh oxygen and nutrients. Twisting will increase blood flow to the digestive organs, which increasing their ability to function.
* Detox
As mentioned above, when you twist you will cut off blood supply to your digestive organs, and then re-introduce fresh blood to your abdominal organs when you release your twist. This re-introduction of fresh blood can help to cleanse the cells of any built up waste because with increased circulation comes increased cellular detoxification. You can also help to move stagnated impurities and gas through your digestive tract due to the compression that comes with twisting.
* Maintain Normal Spinal Rotation
The muscles and other tissues that surround the spine can become stiff overtime. This will lead to a decreased range of motion, pain and discomfort that can really affect quality of life. Practicing twisting postures helps to keep the spinal muscles mobile, helping to keep you mobile as well.
* Reduction In Back Pain

Maybe you have already seen it. Our lessons have undergone a name change: from now on our power yoga lessons are called VINYASA yoga because that indicates much better what the lessons are about: mindfull movement whereby movement and breath are synchronized (vinyasa). The result is more PEACE, FLEXIBILITY AND STRENGTH.

Vinyasa means breathing and movement system; for each movement, there is one breath. The inhalation and exhalation should be the same length and maintained throughout the practice. The purpose of vinyasa is for internal cleansing. The combination of the asanas with movement and breath make the blood circulate freely around all the joints, taking away bodily pains. Sweat is an important by-product of vinyasa because it is through sweat that disease leaves the body and purification occurs. If the method of vinyasa is followed, the body becomes healthy and strong.

How you’re breathing can tell you something about your current state of mind. While the breath acts like a barometer for how you’re feeling, it’s also a tool: breathing techniques can help you shift gears, and change your emotional state.

Nirodha is the end of suffering and its causes. Some days it won’t happen!

Our bodies won’t feel the same from one day to other, some days you might be able to hold that posture for a long time and some days you won’t.
It might be due to external reasons, room temperature, time of the day, full belly... or perhaps it might be your mind distracted... 🤯

What really matters is that you keep practicing as often as you can. Your body will keep gaining strength and flexibility, your breath will get deeper and your mind will find stillness more often!! 🧘🏻‍♀️🧘🏽‍♂️

No struggle. The only funny thing was I did it facing the left side the first time and the alignment was perfect and the right side never went really good. Happy Friday! I’m on my way to spend the weekend in the mountains but it’s supposed to be raining all day every day. I hope it’s not too bad so we can go hiking anyway. Wish me luck. 🙏🏼

Momentan bin ich auf dem Weg in die Berge um dort das Wochenende zu verbringen. Leider soll es relativ kalt werden und ziemlich viel regnen. Ich hoffe, dass sich das noch ändert, sodass wir trotzdem wandern gehen können. Wünscht mir Glück. 😅

When I was driving home Monday evening, I was thinking about how much I can’t wait to get back onto my mat.
When I woke up on Tuesday morning, I couldn’t face stepping onto it.
Tuesday evening came, and nope... still wasn’t feeling it. My body felt tired and the thought of a physical practice felt both forced and draining. .
In the past I would had definitely ignored this; pushed past it and made myself practice.
But yesterday I was like nope. I listened to my body, I listened to my mind and I took another day of rest.
And guess what happened?????
Absolutely NOTHING. 👏🏼 .
It’s okay to rest. In fact, not only is it okay, but absolutely necessary.... and I woke up this morning feeling well rested & ready to jump back on the mat with @yogawithemilyc ☝🏼👏🏼❤️

Another day, another tutorial 🧘‍♀️

Today’s guide is all about backbends - open to all levels of course but I built it with the focus on who’s just approaching them and wants to find more space in their backbends (there might be a LV.2 guide coming soon 🙊).
.
Expanding through the sides of your torso, bringing movement to the spine and opening the shoulders are part of it, but we’re also focusing on stretching the hip flexors!
.
Look through it, practice the movements and find a way to add them in your practice!
.

I spoke in my stories about how I’m having one of those ‘nothing I’m doing is good enough and I’m completely failing at life’ kinda days...
No idea why these intrusive thoughts are here, but they’re here.... And that’s okay. They’ll probably be gone tomorrow and I’ll be back to feeling like myself. 🤷🏻‍♀️ .
For now though; I have no real tips and tricks to make these kind of thoughts ‘go away’ - because that’s not my aim anymore.
My aim is to just let them be. To observe that they are there and just remind myself that;
A) They’re just thoughts; they’re not factual.
B) They WILL pass; and probably even by tomorrow.
C) Of all the good in my life.
The small moments to be grateful for. The big moments to be grateful for.. and everything in between. ⤵️
.
Today my list includes;
-being able to move my body on my yoga mat 🧘‍♀️ -a supportive friend @yogawithemily 👭
-fresh autumnal air 🍂.
-muddy dog walks as the sunsets 🌅.
-big cosy jumpers 🥰
.
If you’re having a day like me; you’ve so got this. Take a moment to pause, breathe and to just acknowledge all the small moments to be grateful for.
Keep on going. It will pass.❤️
