Day 1️⃣ of #YogaEmpowersWomen2019
So happy to be a part of such a wonderfully themed challenge. Yoga truly is empowering, in fact my yoga practice has been instrumental in helping me cope with scars and memories from my own experiences with domestic violence. Coming to my mat helped me sort through the trauma, and learn how to live life again by forgiving not only those who treated me poorly, but myself as well. Today I chose to showcase Warrior II, one of my favorites poses. I love this pose because it reminds me of my strength, not just physically but mentally as well. Sometimes I'm guilty of forgetting how much strength it took to walk away from the violence and start a new life.

November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. .

As Women, mothers, daughters, wives and sisters, but also as Men, fathers, sons, husbands and brothers of women, we encourage all Yogis to join in to support our All Levels Charity Challenge #YogaEmpowersWomen2019 running from November 19th to 25th.

There are many amazing charities that are making a huge difference to women who are most at need. One such charity is WomenForWomen and through this challenge we will be able to support them to continue their amazing work ❤️

I've started teaching a "seasoned/ moderate" hatha class (Mondays 5:45 pm). Its funny to me, because I don't really consider myself a seasoned practitioner. There's so many postures I can't do, I've really only been practicing for 5 and a half years... and often, my own practice is more restorative than active.
But this opportunity has inspired me to offer transitions between familiar postures, like twisted chair into parvritta ashwa sanchalasana and begin laying the foundation for some of the wackier ones (like Bird of Paradise pose, featured here). This video is raw. It's me still working on transitions myself. Practicing harmonizing movements with breath, keeping bandhas engaged... it's me in my glorious home for the winter, where I will continue moving and learning. I have goals, some of them yoga, some involving trekking. All of them invite deeper practice.

Cosy yoga, because the cold this morning made my whole brain and body do a little cold weather panic. I mean... I’ve survived winter before... it’s all probably going to be fine... (right?)

Moving with my breath, mostly with my eyes shut, both cats snoring on the sofa as my soundtrack. This is basically a whole body hug. Be a nice, kind, old friend to yourself.

I’m working on getting lower in poses like W2, as my previously mentioned hip issues begin to improve. I always sink down into it breath by breath, and I’m prone to not keeping my wingspan fully straight! 😅

As you can see, I don’t have a “perfect” Warrior 2. The thing is, I don’t have to. You don’t have to. As long as you’re being safe, it really doesn’t matter what it looks like only what it feels like. You know your body better than anyone else so you know what it’s capable of - when to push a little more and when to ease off. This can change from day to day too. Listen to your body - don’t try to be perfect or look like anyone else! Chair or no chair, this pose feels amazing, and is beneficial for everyone! Give it a try and if you do, let me know how it felt!
Warrior 2 with Chair:
Sit on the front edge of a chair. If you are taller or have long legs, you may need to use a blanket or lift under your front leg, so your thighs are not lower than your knees.
Swivel to your right, bringing your right sitting bone and the back of your right thigh along the front edge of the chair seat. Your left sitting bone may actually be slightly off the chair seat.
Bend your right knee so that the right knee is right above the ankle with the right foot turned out 90 degrees.
Slide your left leg back away from the right until you can fully straighten your left knee with the sole of your left foot on the floor. Note that your left leg will likely not stretch straight back as in the full pose, but will probably need to come towards the right long edge of the mat a few inches. From here, your arms and spinal movements are the same as the classic pose.
Stay for several breaths, and gradually work up to 90-120 seconds with practice.
To come out of the pose, lower your arms, bend your back knee and swing both legs forward so you sit evenly on the front edge of the chair. Then repeat on the second side. (Yogaforhealthyaging.blogspot.com)

In grounding poses we can feel our physical connection to the ground, to Mother Earth and learn to trust. No matter what happens, we can always come back to our roots and the connection with nature, we can remind ourselves that we are not isolated egos but connected to something much larger than ourselves. We are all a part of the earth, we are fully supported. ❤️

Joining in this new challenge starting today #AHolidayReFocus with day 1 and any grounding pose. This reverse warrior feels grounding and energising to me, just what I need during these foggy November days. ❤️

POWER UP YOUR WARRIOR 💪
Warrior II is such a powerful pose but it is one that sometimes people get misaligned.

HOW TO DO IT
1. Wide stance
2. Back foot in line with the middle of the front foot and is 90 degrees to the front foot
3. Front knee is over the ankle, tracking in line with the middle toes
4. Tuck the tail bone
5. Pull the navel in towards the spine, engage the core
6. Shoulders down and away from the ears
7. Drishti (gaze) forward between the front fingers
8. Breathe and stay here for 3 breaths

Practice being a warrior on the mat to be a warrior off the mat 🙏

Appreciation for the simple things

Generally speaking, Warrior II is not a pose anybody struggles with. It is easy to regard it as a „subway station pose“, a pose that is just a gateway to more challenging and more interesting poses.
But it is such an omnipresent pose for a reason. So next time I‘m in Warrior II, I‘m going to try to appreciate the ease and to stay present.

The part of you that surprises you when she shows her teeth.
The part of you you deny push away pretend does not live there within you.
She is your darkness the woman who dwells in the shallow water of your being.
She is in every one of us she rides up on the back of the wave of your righteous ego.
She feeds on the ideas that you deserve more better different.
She lurks in the thoughts and emotions that keep you small.
The notion that you have something to fight for reclaim preserve.
She is the face of war.
The part of us that can understand how we can fight others how we ruin our lives how we can kill in the name of our beliefs.
She is who we must look to when needing to find compassion for others who are captives under her spell.
She is who we must hold lovingly in our hearts when we see those caught in her grasp.
She is who we must learn to love into gentle submission for she only lives and breathes on our un-love.

✨The Warrior Series✨

This is where you find your breath, strength, patience, determination, and a quiet mind🙏🏻. These powerful postures, or asana, help to break down some of the mental and physical barriers of meditation by challenging us mentally and physically. As we breath through these poses, the monkey in the mind quiets, the muscles stop quivering, and all is still. **Remember that the physical asana of Yoga is but ONE element, or limb, of the ancient art. The purpose of the asana is to get us ready to be still and meditate.

As for many yogis who include binds in their asana practice, this was the first one I ever learned as a new yogi. 👶🏻 For our modification today, if connecting your hands isn't quite happening yet, feel free to either use a strap or take a partial bind, with one arm tucked behind your back and the lower one on a block or the floor at your instep.

Practice a few standing poses with the same stance such as #Warrior2, #SideAnglePose and #TrianglePose, in addition to #Malasana and #MarichyasanaA. Come into Side Angle on your right side, either aligning right heel to left arch or heel to heel, back foot turned in slightly less than 90°. Hook your right elbow over your right thigh, and wrap your left arm around and behind you, either grabbing your shirt, waist or right thigh. Use the grip of your left hand to rotate your chest skywards, peeling your left shoulder back in space. Then, thread your right arm under your right hamstrings, reaching the back of your hand towards your outer right thigh or even lower back. Grab your left fingers, a strap, or, if there's space, clasp your left wrist with your right hand; you might even work on straightening the upper arm. Continue stretching your chest skywards to deepen the pose.

One thing to watch out for here is a tendency to overwork the front leg at the expense of balance in the posture. Energetically drag your inner heels towards each other without actually moving them, and distribute your weight as even;y as possible between your two legs. Of course, practice both sides, and stay longer on your tough one!

Sometimes we talk about changing the orientation of our body to gravity in order to change the loads of a movement. Do you think this counts? 😉😉

Here I’ve kept the same (or very close to the same!) joint position of our classic warrior 2 pose (virabhadrasana 2), but I’ve rotated the pose 90 degrees so that one of my outstretched arms is now the foundation of the pose instead of my feet.
.
And because of my new relationship to gravity, this pose is loading my body in a completely different way than it normally does, and very different muscles are being recruited in different ways to help me hold the shape.
.
When I was doing this “wall warrior 2”, I felt most of the work in my bottom arm & my core (two places which aren’t loaded a ton in a normal upright warrior 2).
.
My bottom leg (especially that hip) was also working a lot to stabilize my shape and to keep me from sliding off the wall and down to the floor.
.
Anywayyy, this is another example of the fact that while we can use a wall to help make yoga poses more accessible, we can *also* use a wall to help make yoga poses much more challenging! (And I mean much more! 🔥)
.
I would not have thought of this very creative warrior 2 variation if it hadn’t been for my good friend @emkyoga, who sent me a post by @melloyoga in which she was doing this crazy variation (and making it look easy!)

Because I’ve recently posted a similar “wall” move with half moon pose (remember that one??), I knew I had to give good old warrior 2 a try as well. And voila - here is the result!
