The secret to studying for long periods is to get out of your apartment. I remember after dinner, some days I would study in my room and some days I would go to the library. The days I would go to my room and study, I would eventually somehow make it to my bed because it looked so comfortable after a long day of lectures. Just go to the library or an uncomfortable environment with other people around so you don't get used to going to your bed. Tag someone who can relate.

Where to start. The last 11 months have been such a ride--the highs of grossing my first cancer case to the lows of every day frustration of how much material we have to learn in such a short time frame. I can honestly say I've never studied more in my life prior to starting this program. I'd like to thank my old boss, @brenda.young.78 for introducing me to what a PA is and pushing me to apply, my parents for instilling the importance of education, my boyfriend for the constant support, and my classmates for the encouragement to keep going but also drinking when necessary. A special shout out to CBD, my weighted blanket, and bike, because without you all, I might've actually died this year. 😂
.
.
Academic year is (almost) done, on to clinical rotations in January! 🥼

Finally made it to the END OF DIDACTIC YEAR, and I got a fancy new white coat to prove it 🥼🙌🏼
.
.
Thank you to my entire support group (family, friends, and classmates). Y’all are my giants ( #iykyk). I wouldn’t be here without your constant support (and patience with all of my—probably daily—breakdowns). Excited to start clinical year, but VERY READY to give my brain a little break ✨

Life and Debt After Vet School part I- a tragic comedy, written by every vet ever.
.
**Photo from my white-coat ceremony, before I realized that loans were real**
.
As promised, I shall now delve into the riveting subject of post-vet school student debt in America! Let us begin with the fact that many of us (dare I say MOST of us) graduate with a debt to income ratio that is very close to or greater than 2:1. Just let that sink in for a moment. Now throw in silly “little” interest rates (I’ll use my whopping 6% as an example) which start accumulating the moment you accept those student loans. Great! You’ve just bought yourself a one-way ticket to the overpopulated, ever-somber city of Debtsville, Welcome. City slogan “The good news is, once you pay off your debt, you’ll go back to being just broke”.
.
Now, of course I’m being a teeny tiny bit facetious, but honestly, it’s a problem. A MONOLITHIC PROBLEM that many aspiring vets aren’t factoring in, and rightly so. It’s challenging enough just to get into vet school, why would one even waste time on any other burdensome subject?!
.
So to offer a hand, here are just a few of the things I’ve learned as a new citizen of Debtsville:
.
Consider going to your in-state school, or a school that your state has a contract with. This will reduce your tuition costs tremendously. Ex: tuition for UGA vet med in-state is ~$17,500 per year (3rd year is more expensive ~$26,000). UGA’s Out-of-state tuition is ~$47,000 per year (3rd year up to ~$55,800). This doesn’t even factor in cost of living, books, supplies, transportation, etc. Many schools have even higher tuition rates, including the Island vet schools. I realize in-state may not be an option for everyone, but if it’s available to you, give it a good thought!
.
After graduating, make a plan. Most schools will have opportunities for you to meet with financial advisors and other knowledgeable mentors who can guide you through the migraine that is student loan repayment. There are many strategies, the best of which depends on your personal situation.
.
Part II on the way. Let me know what info would be most helpful/interesting for you! 🧐

Halfway to PA!
In case you were wondering what I’ve been up to for the last 15 months, I have spent over 1,000 hours in the classroom plus countless hours studying and preparing for 50+ exams, 50+ quizzes, a handful of physical exam competencies and OSCEs (my heart rate is probably chronically elevated from these), as well as some projects and presentations.
Thank you to everyone who helped me celebrate the completion of didactic year! Now it’s time for part 2 so bring on clinical rotations! #halfwaythere #whitecoatceremony #whitecoat #paschoollife #roadto2020

the most expensive coat I’ve ever owned but my favorite one by far. the past 15 months have been hard, yet rewarding. they’ve been filled with plenty of tears, stress, and self-doubt but also so much learning, growth, and fun. I’m so thankful for this opportunity and super excited to spend the next 12 months continuing to learn and grow. clinical rotations are up next! I’m one step closer to being a PA-C, y’all! 👩🏻‍⚕️💕 #WhiteCoatCeremony #FMUPAP

Finishing didactic year and starting clinical rotations on Monday calls for a professional pic with my trusty stethoscope! Had the best time at my white coat ceremony yesterday celebrating how far I’ve come (pics to come). I have no idea what I’m getting myself into, but feeling equal parts nervous and excited! Let’s do this! Rotation 1 out of 9: Emergency Med 🚑 👩🏻‍⚕️.

Today I officially received my white coat and became one step closer to the dream👩🏽‍⚕️
It’s moments like this that make me realize how far God has brought me and even how further He continues to take me. There have been ups and downs but His strength keeps me going and I’m excited for what comes next.

#WhiteCoatWednesday with UCLA David Geffen SOM MS1 Zara O. 👩🏾‍⚕️🙌🏾💕 @zara.oparaugo

What would you do if knew you were capable of accomplishing anything you put your mind to? Everyones starting point is different. It is less about where you are, and more about where you envision yourself going. I am so grateful to GOD for my parents and humbled by this journey. I didn’t grow up with everything, but they ALWAYS made me feel like I lacked nothing. To know my Mom, is to know where I learned how to be BOLD in my dreams and courageous. To be a woman of patience, but also know when TIMES UP.  As for my “creativity” and “business acumen” that we all know and love… Well, you can thank my father for teaching me how to sell YOU the shoes on YOUR feet. Thanks Mom & Dad. Thank you for SIMPLY loving me and always showing up for me— even when it was hard. I know how much of a privilege and blessing it was to be able to share this White Coat Ceremony with you, and I will never ever take it for granted.
This white coat has been 22 years in the making. 22 long years of sacrifices, diligence, and FAITH. I am still trying to wrap my head around how, out of 14,000+ applicants, I have the privilege of pursuing my doctorate degree at one of the most competitive medical institutions in the WORLD, UCLA ( #1 in California, and #6 in the nation… FYI). However, with great blessings, comes great responsibility. I HAVE NO OPTION BUT TO BE GREAT. Not for myself, but for the black & brown girls and boys who need to see someone like me be great. Thank you to all of my family members, friends, and mentors. I love you all beyond belief.

As a UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine PRIME-LA scholar, I will be completing both an M.D. and MBA dual degree with an emphasis in underserved and vulnerable populations.

And then, I remember ~
.
.
I sit and I sit and I sit,

I read and I read and I read,

I repeat and I repeat and I repeat,

They teach and they teach and they teach,

They test and they test and they test,

So that I learn and I learn and I learn.

And then, I see 𝓎𝑜𝓊, and I remember this rare disease is not something I sat and read and repeated while being taught and tested and finally learning — this disease is yours. It’s your reality. It’s your pain. It’s your daily struggle.

I auscultate the pseudo patient,

Together the paid actor and I laugh as I “place hands on patient while making eye contact to allow patient to acclimate” as instructed,

I palpate,

I examine,

I think I find the liver (or is it the rib cage?), I estimate the span of the liver and ‘explain’ the signs of failure to the actor who is not sick.

And then, I see 𝓎𝑜𝓊 jaundiced and sick, and I remember. This disease is not something I sat and read and repeated while being taught and tested and finally learning — this disease is yours. It’s your reality. It’s your pain. It’s your daily struggle.
.
.
During our first patient presentation, my eager class sat white coated and tired from our previous lecture.

And then 𝓎𝑜𝓊 told your story.

And again, I remembered. These daily realities of yours are something I will never understand more than you. No doctor can. There is no amount of studying, testing, dissecting, or learning that compares to your reality with your disease.

So thank you, for your willingness to share your reality with me so I continue to remember this and advocate for you.

I hope one day to work with you together, as a team, to battle your disease, and alleviate your pain.

But, I will remember, this is yours.
