The kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis) seriously screams through the water. Also known as the mackerel tuna, this kawakawa was terrorizing the huge schools of scad during my safety stop on my dive. The scad were busy guzzling some cheap diver bubbly while feasting on zooplankton, pelagic crustaceans, and other particulate floating through the water. Then, watch out... This was a very cool multi-level wreck dive. Diving self-reliant, I was just out fun diving to shoot some video. I got the first dip, and was alone on the wreck at 30 meters (100 feet) for about ten minutes before any other divers were even the water.

It was so calm and peaceful down on the Sea Tiger shipwreck. I got some great video. Then, several boat loads of divers (four groups, about two dozen people) descended and were soon bumbling all over the wreck. I got some decent footage of the divers swimming around the wreck.

I slowly ascended, making my way up to 15 meters (50 feet), stretching my dive's run time to stay well clear of my No Decompression Limit. While the other divers from the boat I was on started back up on the mooring line, I had plenty of gas to spare, so I hung out at 6 meters (20 feet) for about 15 minutes.

A few minutes into the stop, all of a sudden, the scad were scrambling every direction, schooling together to increase their chances of not getting eaten. At least a couple kawakawa were out hunting. I caught many glimpses of them shooting through the school of fish. #wow

Even slowing the video 50% they are still mighty fast. In the depth of this video, you can also barely make out the shadow of the wreck. The actual visibility was even better than what was recorded with natural light.

Just another good reason to take a nice long safety stop. .

This microscopic object is a frustule - the silica exoskeleton of a single-celled organism called a diatom. These photosynthetic algae come in all shapes. They live in the oceans and waterways, and produce as much as a quarter of Earth's oxygen every year.

"Enjoying the last moments of the day over west Oahu. I witnessed and incredible golden hour here without a soul in sight. I usually come here to escape the hustle of Honolulu where there’s no buildings, homes, or hotels. I really hope this place never changes and I can come back to enjoy its beauty for many years to come."
