Happy birthday to Ben Nye, Sr.! Ben moved to Los Angeles from Nebraska in 1926 and started working at Fox Studios copying sheet music. He apprenticed under makeup artist, Monte Westmore, Sr. and soon after assisted him on the 1939 civil war epic, “Gone with the Wind”. It was on this film, working with actress Hattie McDaniel, that Ben realized there were no makeup shades for actors of color. He had to carefully blend colors so Miss McDaniel would not appear too red or “pasty”. He continued to create colors and specialty products throughout his career.
In 1944, Ben was hired as Makeup Director for 20th Century Fox Studios where he oversaw the makeup and hair departments, responsible for all films produced by the studio. While at Fox, he trained dozens of artists in one of the best apprenticeship programs in Hollywood. In all, he supervised over 500 feature films and television productions at Fox.
When he retired in 1967, Ben set out to make his cosmetics available to the entertainment industry. His legacy continues through his sons, Ben Nye, Jr. and Dana Nye, who followed in his footsteps, and Ben Nye Makeup. ❤️
