“Copenhagen, a place where Red Stars come to burn out” read the banner by the Danish fans. But they didn’t account that those Red Stars come from a place called Serbia. A place where football has far ago lost its shine, crumbling at times seemingly in to the abyss behind the glitz and glamour of western money, greatly affected by sanctions & corruption. But there’s this thing that’s always remained, spirit, soul and fighting till the the last atom of energy leaves your body. Cojones my friend, big grand Serbian balls, a Balkan mentality of inner resilience that at the darkest times can save a man when they’re down. And Red Star were down, down to 10 men for 60+ minutes, 30 of those in extra time, the Danish besieged the Red Star box, like vikings they attacked from side to side attempting to make one last deadly strike, but to no avail. One thing was missing it seems. Cojones my friend. Cojones. And to penalties we went, the Viking’s last attempt, two times they had the chance to finally make the deadly blow in the shoot out, Milan Borjan saving one, another blazed over the bar by the Croatian lad that earlier on told the media Red Star were nothing special. The Gods were watching it seems, the keepers even had a go, 22 spot kicks, 34 prayers and 75 Jebem Ti Mamu’s later (apologies for my language), and the goalkeeper from Knin, from the same town I left as a kid, a boy who’s family seeked refuge in Canada for a better life picked the right side in a moment where time just seemed to stand still. The Red Stars finally through, but they forgot to burn out, instead like a Supernova they shined, their light illuminating the spirits of millions watching back home. Luckily I was one of the few thousand in the away end that witnessed these stars forgetting to follow the script, and forgetting to follow the script in truly spectacular motherfucking fashion. Red Star live another day. Football remains the greatest sport, just when you think you’ve lost care, it finds a way to drag you back in to its romance, it’s madness, those incredibly seductive ways. Well I guess I’m back in love and I’m looking forward to the next time we see each other. The Vuj Report. 💕
