Michelin Bib Gourmand Hainanese Chicken Rice from....Thailand? 🤔

In 1960, a Hainanese Immigrant moved to Bangkok and started selling Chicken Rice from a pushcart. Today, Go-Ang Kaomunkai Pratunam is a casual eatery at the popular Pratunam Shopping District in Bangkok with a Michelin Bib Gourmand Award. Helmed by second generation owner, 66 Year Old Mr Sombat (aka Go-Ang, which means Big Brother Ang) has opened 5 outlets in Singapore 😋

Opening a Chicken Rice Stall in Singapore is already a challenging task. It is even more difficult bringing in Thai-Style Chicken Rice to compete with Local F&B Establishments in the Chicken Rice War in Singapore, where Chicken Rice is arguably our No.1 Local Delicacy 🏆

We ordered their Signature Chicken Thigh Meat Rice ($5.50, which is more than 3x the price in Thailand) 😐
Chicken: There was no sauce or oil being drizzled on the Boneless Chicken, so you will get the pure original taste of the meat. While it is not as succulent or soft as compared to our Local Version, it is still tasty with natural Chicken Flavours. We noticed that the Chicken does taste a little more gamey, with some slight pink colouration on the meat. Despite the slightly drier meat, the skin is silky smooth 🐔

Rice: Premium Thai Rice is cooked in Chicken Oil and Fats to create fluffy aromatic Chicken Rice. The Rice is noticeably less oily as compared to our Local Version. In terms of overall quality, this Rice will beat many of those from our Local Stalls 🍚

Chilli: Instead of serving a Red Chilli, Go-Ang serves a unique Chilli that is Brown. Made using Fermented Beans, Chopped Ginger and Green Bird's Eye Chilli, the sauce is sour and spicy. We love the texture of the Chopped Ginger, which is an alternative to our local Blended Version 🌶️ Overall, Go-Ang's Chicken Rice is definitely less oily than our Local Version. It has the signature aroma of a good quality Chicken Rice, while introducing Thai Elements into the dish with a unique spin of the Chilli 👍

Is it better than our Local Chicken Rice? You tell me 😏
