"We went with four rolls of Kodak 250D and one leftover 500T roll to Namibia to shoot the One Shot dance sequence. We only had five tries to nail it which put a lot of pressure on the whole team. So we prepared and rehearsed as much as possible in advance to make every take count. In the evening we got two perfect takes just before and after the sun set. ⠀ Director of Photography Felix Striegel and I chose to shoot on Kodak 35mm stock because of how well it handles the bright conditions in the desert and the texture it gives to the image. "There was an effortless quality about early MTV performance videos that felt kinetic and alive. Conceptually I wanted to try and capture a similar energy with this video for Inhaler where the focus would be entirely on the band and their performance. "Analog comes from the greek word “Ana-legein”: legein means to think and ana means up. “Above thinking”, to think over things, passing the common conception of reality. That’s why we don’t want to leave the analog world. It’s not because it’s better or worse, higher or lower quality. I think it’s because it helps us think and live above the usual understanding of our digital world- the way of being that we became so quickly accustomed to. That’s why I shoot film and listen to vinyl. This project was shot on film, printed on film, projected with a 16mm projector and we were therefore able to burn it. Watch the music video in our On Film: Music playlist at youtube.com/kodak. ⠀ "Katy called me a few weeks ago at the height of the global pandemic and asked me if I would feel comfortable meeting her 6 feet away in nature to shoot her music video. I said yes. Her next question was if I could shoot it on film. I said hell yes. ⠀ Since we had to be socially distant and could not have anyone else on set, Super 8 was perfect for me. I armed myself with two restored cameras - a Beaulieu 4008 with a beautiful Angenieux lens for my main shots and a Canon 310XL for when I had to be quick - and a range of film stock for changing light conditions on an overcast afternoon. ⠀ While listening to the song on repeat before the shoot, I kept thinking of Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians, and her depiction in Renaissance paintings as luminous and otherworldly. So I mostly used 250D film stock on locations with a little light peaking through shadows. ⠀ Film is honest and magical at the same time. The color and quality in the final cut is straight from the camera and the scan - I didn’t do anything to it in post. 8mm film is not perfect, but it’s sincere, and I love the color and joy that it brings. "The concept for Last Money was to have Sam in television and film scenes that were informative to him in regards to money. To pull off this look we chose to shoot Kodak 35mm 4-Perf in a variety of different aspect ratios to nod to the shows he was referencing. These shows were all shot on film in their day, so it was natural to choose film, but we wanted to do so in a modern way to give us a more updated look to each scene. "The Charge poetically explores the notion of isolation and containment, and the need of expression that burns within us all. No matter how far we are pushed there is always a human compulsion to join together and break free, themes that may be more relevant now than ever before. ⠀ Very early on in pre-production we felt very passionate about shooting the project on film. "The story of Ayuuk begins at the central market in Oaxaca City, Mexico. Amongst the myriad of spices, chocolate, coffee and produce, we were taken by the depth of flavor of one particular chili. Naturally, we cleared out all 20 kilograms of stock, brought it back to Copenhagen and distilled the first Pasilla Mixe spirit. ⠀ Pasilla Mixe is a special, smoke-dried chili grown at 2,700 meters above sea level by the Mixe people — known in their native language as Ayuuk. Once fully ripened, the chilis are partially dried on the plant, and finished on wicker racks over gnarled hardwood smoke. The true Pasilla Mixe possesses a twilight, dark red fruitiness and a unique earthiness that reflects the rugged terroir in which it grows. ⠀ Our search for more chilis led us to the Sierra Norte mountains where the Mixe people have maintained their traditional way of life and language for centuries. Here, the Pasilla Mixe is integral to their communal identity although its labor-intensive cultivation has gradually diminished. Its undeniable that digital cannot replicate skin tones the way that film does.
